Wanderings (Char. Dev.)

Alair's eyes countered Kenshin's half dazed look with interest. She wanted to know what the young man had been thinking about but did not ask, figuring that it was best not to pry. So instead she asked something else of the man, something that had been on her mind ever since the two had walked into the café.

"Where will you go from here?"

She took another piece of egg from her plate and put it in her mouth, at the same time, her gaze falling onto Kenshin with admirable interest.

Kenshin gave a thoughtful pause as Alair's question sank in. He had planned very little in his years of wandering and he wasn't to sure how to answer her question. But maybe it was time to start some planning.

So where would he go? He had came to the city to learn to adapt, but where should he begin? Perhaps it was time to settle a bit again.

Looking up, Kenshin gave an unsure shrug.

"Erm...I really don't know where I'm headed right now. I've just been going wherever the wind blows for awhile..."

It wasn't like him to leave things up to chance, but he had been doing that quite a lot lately.

"That makes two of us," Alair murmured, though enough to where Kenshin could hear her.

Shyly she looked away, her brown eyes darting to the table adjacent to them.

She smiled coyly, considering her thoughts.

"You could probably use someone to show you the ropes then, wandering is an everyday event for me," she said, placing her utensil on the napkin that was beside her plate.

She was not really interested in eating anymore. It had been a long time since she had actually had the opportunity to sit down and talk with someone, candidly anyway.

There was another pause as he studied his situation. This place was very new to him. It was an obvious fact that he needed to readjust. And he didn't know anyone here.

Finishing his food, he pushed his plate aside. Giving a slightly embarrassed grin, Kenshin gave almost a defeated nod.

"Yeah, I probably could use some help..."

"Good."

She would be of help to him and he would be of help to her, his help to her would not be so obvious, at least until much later.

"I have not been in this area long, but I've done some looking around. There's a market just around the corner from here. If you need money, that'd probably be the best place to start looking for work."

Kenshin nodded as he absorbed the information. A market was definitely a good place to check out. Hopefully luck would be with him and he would be able to find some decent work.

"I'll take a look around there then. Anything else I should know? Anything I should avoid?"

"I'm glad you asked."

Even if he had not asked her of what to avoid, Alair probably would have told him sooner or later.

"In the market place there are many who will fight tooth and nail to get money from you. So if you find yourself with a job, be careful what you spend it on within the market. They sell a lot of used up broken parts there. The fruit stands are nice."

Kenshin nodded in understanding as he listened. He wasn't too surprised and even somewhat expected that. Hopefully people won't pose too much of a problem. But if a few did, he hoped a mind trick or two would suffice.

"Okay then. I guess I'll head to the marketplace. I'll see you around?"

Alair nervously tugged at her ear for a moment, wondering if she actually would see him again.

"Sure," she said finally, giving Kenshin a serene smile.

"If you're not from around here... then where are you from?"

She wanted to know just out of small curiosity. If she felt inclined enough, maybe she'd find him again.

Kenshin broke into a small smile as she asked where he was from.

"How about I give you a clue."

Gathering on the Force, he gently lifted one of the glasses on the table so that it levitated at their eye level.

"Can you guess?"
