There's a fair amount of sensors that SW ships, but the primary and normal targetting one is the EPR (Electro-Photo Receptor), which are basically cameras that see in various wavelengths.
I'm guessing that you mean something like radar, which does exist in SW as the FST (Full-Spectrum Transceiver). It is the most prevalent sensor according to some sources along with the EPR. Here are some formal definitions, starting with the primary source:
(Star Wars Sourcebook)
(CUSWE)
(Ace Roscoe, NIF Star Wars Discussion)
FSTs aren't perfect by any means, both being somewhat insensitive, as well as having somewhat substandard range according to RPG materials. Thus, even if the ships weren't equipped with stealth armor or systems of any sort, the targetting data wouldn't be as good as normal as compared to that from an EPR or DER. The main problem I see with the idea is that Nutorium, according to CUSWE, is designed to defeat the more basic and common sensors, which would include FSTs, since all ships carry them. This would also fit in with the common idea that SW stealth armor in general, including Nutorium, is much like the RAM used on the F-117 Nighthawk.
I think we should also decide on how much damage EM guns do as well. I'm actually pretty indifferent in how much they do because of canon inconsistencies, but that damage applies to ships of both sides then.
Which says nothing for the fact that if you shoot something at it and it vanishes, you know something is there. Not what is there, per say, as you're in very simplistic terms looking at the item's shadow.
Come again? The first part is fairly true, if you were given the location of "it". But how would you know where "it" was from the start, unless "it" was a S9 firing its laser cannons? I don't get what you saying by the item's shadow.
I think you should both shut up and just play. It's only a game. Granted, a game we're all out to win, but a game none the less. It's a fight with imaginary warships over imaginary planets in an imaginary galaxy.
Demo: There are no gravity wells on an Empire. 10,000 SBDs shields is probably twice as good as 2*5,000. Kinda the difference between a piece of steel bar one inch in diameter, and two of half that size. The bigger piece, while the same size as the others, will still bend less. Corises magnetorian sweep will prevent you from targeting weak points in Corises shields. But at the range you're at, that's not important. You'd have to be blind, deaf, and dumb to miss the Pegasus out in front of you. Corise: Your planetary defenses are up. But to be a nice guy, I put it down to "a few moments" from "a few minutes" anyway. A CGT, while not perfect, still gives me an good idea where your fighters are, perticularly in groups. Planetary shields stop Ion Cannons. Ultrachrome may or may not be outdated - that is not something relevent to the current thread- but it is not nearly 100% effective, or even 80% as you seem to say. No. That's unfair. And that "neverending cycle" of yours is bullshit. A microjump isn't instant. I am out of surface based turbolaser/ion cannon range. You can't hit me wiht them, but I also can't hit you. You have no patrols on your system edge - none were mentioned, none exhist. At least when I plan on calling in reinforcements, I have the courtesy to give sketchy details on them before hand. *blows nose.* A SOb masses less than a Pegasus. You are going to lose lots of fighters. Look at WWII bomber raids, or attacks on ships with dive bombers in the Pacific. Our boys got turned to mincemeat. In you post you never mentiioned the Audicia having a tractor lock on the SOb. Therefore, there is no tractor lock made by the Audicia made on the SOb. You're correct, a grav shadow isn't the same as a mass shadow.
There's more, but I really don't feel like continueing to go through the thread and listing them.
Honestly, I'm sick and tired of it. Yes, Corise, I know your list's bigger than demos. But a lot of taht is explanations.
Though I am loathe to agree with Kach (for obvious reasons) this situation is, without a doubt, getting fully out of hand.
In the past it has been a given that OOC threads debating IC conduct will, invariably, run longer then the story being debated itself. This, however; is utterly stupid.
Simply because a thing was one way once does not mean it shall and will forever remain unchanged. TRF has changed gears and many of you bean-counters refuse to keep up with the evolution... What bothers me is that this situation has no redeeming benefit to anyone aside from the three players involved; for each IC post I can count at least ten OOC posts.
Ahnk's logic for sticky'ing this thread is quickly wearing thin on me. You guys need to work on the story (which, oddly enough, looks fairly incomplete to me), not the OOC thread about the story .
Demos: I expect a hell of a lot more out of you, a veteran member of TRF and easily the most experienced member involved in this... whatever you want to call it. Continue to set an example worth following, or something...
Corise: I love you man, but seriously, I have to ask; wtf? You know exactly how I feel about this issue and about the on-going beancounting that you continue to endorse despite my advice.
Kach: I think I've counted one maybe two posts you have typed in this thread which have served a useful purpose. In my opinion you need to stop fanning the flames, as mentioned before, and continue to focus on the story as you have since.
To All Three: OOC is fun, and sure the members sometimes enjoy popping in to see what's the what. However; you are getting to the point now where this thread serves only one purpose.... and that is to scare away potential newbies. Yes, I have personally interacted with a potential member who, having witnessed this embarassing shit frenzy, ran away with his tail tucked. At some point you have to consider the community as a whole, not just your own little imaginary toys.
EDIT: If you want to continue to 'discuss' this thread, I'm going to suggest you take it to a more select location for the reason mentioned above. It's great if the OOC helps to move the story along, and you three have seemingly begun to cooporate a considerable amount more then you were, however; you chased off a possible newbie and that alone should give you cause to reconsider your motivations and so forth.
Take this to heart. As Cartman would say, "Guys, I'm seriously."
I was talking about the KIBC Mk II. You are aware of it and its capabilities?
Not around a large mass, such as planetary system. And yes, this actually is important to the thread and what will happen.
The neverending cycle is theoritical only, and that's not how I've played it. My point in pointing out the cycle was to show that I wasn't overplaying it.
No, it only takes several seconds to compute with some equipment, which the Confederation now possesses.
Not within this thread, but in others. But if you want, fine.
Because when both you and Kraken entered the thread, as planned within TNO, I knew that was coming, both from reading the IC thread and from here.
Discussed already. There's no certain way to actually determine because both Drayson and myself could define the masses of our ships.
Certainly, and so did the Japanese. But that's not an especially good argument, because neither side was using stealth planes, whereas Drayson and myself are both employing ships that either are stealthy or mix up sensors, which is a huge advantage. If you want a historical example, consider the F-117 attacks in the first Gulf War. Not a lot of forces on the stealth fighters.
I didn't mention the Audacia in specific, I simply stated the entire fleet tractored the SOb. Thus, because the Audacia is part of the fleet, it would be tractoring the SOb. But that's irrelevant, since because of Jan's persuasion, the maneuver is going as planned.
Kach, you should know more than anyone else in TNO that this was going to happen. If none of you can feasibly justify some of your most powerful actions, why should I let happen, particularly when you started attacking me first?
Once again, can I get an opinion from a TNO member on railgun damage?
EDIT(because Beff just posted):
Agreed. Perhaps we can work out a pausible story line? If anyone, regardlesss of faction, thinks of an idea on how to resolve it, could you please post it? Thanks.
All I was doing was listing arguements. I quit reading your post halfway and skipped to the end.
For the record, Park was not the reinforcments I mentioned. That was a spur of the moment thing, and we never discussed him entereing when I wrote that. There is still a squadron of ships and a bad ass command ship out there ready to be called in.
One more OOC post, that's all it'll take. Just one more.
You have not enjoyed the benefit of a better story because of this ongoing mud-wrestling contest.
You have not increased the quality or content of the IC thread.
You have scared away a potential new member that I personally went through the effort of trying to recruit.
There's three reasons right there. One more OOC post and I'm closing this thread until such time as someone else on the staff either denouces my actions or uncovers an agreeable outcome that has, thus far; escaped you all. You can talk in private. You should consider this heavily.
I'm totally with Beff, this is just beyond stupid. You guys are arguing imaginary numbers and figures for a pretend fights and trying to apply real science to a fictional universe and, really, it's just kind of sad. Instead of reading Wikipedia articles tonight about the effect of particulate irradiates on a transphasic energy field, leave your house, buy a drink, and get yourself laid. If you absolutely must be a nerd, go read a book. Or go watch Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth. If you want to argue science, pick something important, like the impending destruction of the fucking Earth, rather then trying to keep your fake ships alive.
Don't worry, TRF will still be here the next day. And you'll still be just as sad for wanting to keep posting in this topic.
