If this thread is any hint I'd say the OOC board would be a very foolish idea.

It'd degenerate into a Ceel hate-fest :P

Only if the admins let that happen. That's what admins are supposed to do, stop stuff like that from happening.

Stop stuff like what from happening? Free speech?

It's not our job to defend Ceel from other people's opinions. If he feels anything said here is inflamatory or false, he is free to register here and defend himself.

In fact, if he so desires, he may provide me by whatever means he would an email address, I will register him myself.

Ultimately nothing here has been said beyond what you said to Syren that any of the staff have issue with. If people want to say bad things about Ceel, so be it. As he's not a member here he cannot be afforded the protection that status entails.

As such, free speech until it becomes hate speech or, in our opinion, begins to damage the board.

But the question is, should this portal be a message board or should it just be a site? I think a site would be better than a message board of any kind. A board would turn into many fights will a portal site would be cheaper to maintain and run (a single page site simple) and would work far more to our advantage for the total community exposure and perhaps it can be desined with the links all in a ring and once a month a different board as their link smack dab in the center as a board of the month kind of deal.

No. It shouldn't be. It shouldn't be at all. The motivations behind it are far too suspect. This isn't like that person who, in doing RPG-board reviews, posted a biography of TRF alongside a brief description. What you suggest runs the serious risk of crossing Intellectual Property boundries... something any Admin should be aware of in a community like TRF (or any other mass-contribution site).

More importantly I don't feel that anything like this portal/union should even be considered without a vote taking into acount the opinions of the actual members who have, over the years, helped craft a self-established identity for TRF. Remeber, I was never a part of TGC... I don't go back that far, but I certianly don't want, for my own sake, to be affiliated with said forum. This is just my opinion, mind.

Leaving TGC aside for a moment, there is something in this I think.

Having a kind of portal which kind of unites all the communities together, will help everyone all round.

I actually think thats a damned good idea.

TRF isn't going to become a part of TGC again, so I don't think you guys need to 'worry' about that lol.

BUT having a kind of portal where all of the major (and minor) communities can be listed and showcased could really be benficial for all parties involved.

Traffic wise, etc.

With all the creative types at each community I think we could all come up with something really shithot.

It does not need to be any more complicated than that.

If we split the costs of it all equally between all parties, it would be very manageble I am sure, and I think everyone can realise the benefits.

There doesn't need to be 'another' message board, apart from a simple 'news' section perhaps highlighting whats going on at each community perhaps.

Of course Beff if you are really that opposed to it, the fairest way would be to cast a vote on it.

As for another set of forums, I don't know, I would say one step at a time.

First the Portal / hub , see how that goes see if it works and all parties can get on, then perhaps add / try adding some kind of OOC forum after , but its not really necessary to have one IMO.

All boards will have their own OOC forums as it is, should you wish to speak with anyone.

Plus , doing it this way (the hub / portal notion) means we can unite our resources , but at the same time keep our own identities and communities seperate.
Keeping what makes us all unique and not destroying our own identity in the process (should there be those of you who feel that may be the case).

It would also mean everyone would still run their own boards without any interference or hindrance from any other groups, and all we would need to co'operate on is the hub / portal itself.

I actually think a portal with sites listed will suffice. I don't think there's any point in starting up yet another message board. Just seems pointless, IMO.

I am appalled by the unparalleled lows to which members of various Star Wars Roleplaying communities have stooped in order generate uncalled for reasons to ridicule me.

A few days ago I sent a general message over the ezboard email system. The goal of the message was simply this: to encourage the various remaining fan-run Star Wars communities to open communication channels between each other in order to discuss ideas regarding ways of fishing some semblance of unity from the pool of disparate message boards that exist today. In short, I hoped that through words we might all find some common ground, some unity, that might one day allow us to again congregate at a common, popular, location, similar to Swfans (circa 1999 - 2001). Although I took great care to specify neither a location, nor a leadership structure, for this project, a number of you did not hesitate to accuse and convict me of acts not intended.

One popular assumption was that I was simply attempting to draw members to The Gungan Council. This was simply not the case. Had it been my intention to attract your members to my own community, logically I would have regulated all unity discussion to TGC. Instead I created a discussion thread on each of the message boards that I thought might taken an interest in the project, and through links at TGC, encouraged members of all boards to venture out to the various communities and meet people. A few people, namely Ahnk of TRF, Bane Nathos of TGC, and Jay Mertall SithLore, undestood my intents and had the initiative to visit most of the communities on the list. Others, you know who you are, greeted my arrival at your communities only with insults, old grudges, and baseless acusations.Another false assumption that many people made, was that I was attempting to bring the members of all communities onto a message board under my control. This too was incorrect, and not based on anything stated in my original message.

It is interesting to see what kind of conclusions people jump to in situations like this. Such ideas must come from somewhere. In the Star Wars universe the various races have traditionally built droids in their own image. In the case of the Trade Federation of The Phantom Menace, all droids were controlled remotely from a command ship. If the ship were to be disabled all droid units would case to function. The leaders of the federation made their droids this way because it was their assumption (and fear) that the droids would the same way that they, the Federation, would in a given situation. The members of the federation were treacherous beings, prone to cheating and lying to increase their own power and to seize power over others. The Federation naturally believed that, if not controlled, their droids would eventually rise up and rebel against their creators. For those of you lack adequate reading comprehension skills I will spell out the message of the parable for you in small words. Your assumptions about my intentions in the board unity project represent the way that you might potentially have acted, had you been the one to propose board unity, instead of me.

I’m not upset by the outright rejection of what I have proposed here . I guess I never really expected anybody to take my idea seriously. Since the day I first registered at the original Swfans.net on July 20th 1999, I’ve grown used to such petty behavior from people on the internet.

What does upset me, however, is what this whole thing says about the state of humanity in general. Just in terms of my 6 years of experience with message boards, people just don’t seem to work together as well anymore. And so here we are. As I think about all of you who for some reason or another have chosen to hate my guts, I sit and wonder why exactly it is that although you all share a common hatred for me, you can’t even seem to come together over that hate. If I felt threatened or angry about something I know that I would want to surround myself with people who felt the same way.

I am withdrawing any interest I once had in this idea of unity, but I hope that the idea might live on without me. There are a few dozen small Star Wars message boards out that we all know about, many of them have common roots, or common members. It would be a shame if they did not bolster each others existence through working together.
