Vodo leaned on his walking stick heavily and hugged his cloak around him tightly, to better protect himself from the howling winds and chilly air of Coruscant, as he, Leia, Fraktusk, and Azak all moved toward a looming building up ahead.

Once they had all met outside the hotel, Vodo had taken charge and laid out his plan. They were first to make their way to an old abandoned warehouse, which had a turbolift that could discreetly take them down to the lower levels, from there, they could make their way to the Jedi Temple ruins and set up the cameras, which would take footage over two days. From that footage they could derive a number of things, such as Imperial Army positions, passing pedestrians, and workers (who worked on the nearby building projects that Azak had once worked for).

The upper walkways leading from the hotel were unusually sparse of people tonight. Probably the cold air he told himself.

The state of the weather WAS unusual though. Back during the days of the Old Republic, terraforming had become widely available, and weather control systems were developed as a product of that. One such WCS had been built on Coruscant, allowing the people to control the current state of their planet's weather. Which, by standard, was almost always warm in the day and cool in the evening.

Vodo looked up at the cloud-filled night sky. He wondered how long it had been since rain had fallen on this city-world. Probably centuries.

They reached the building without incident. From his studies, Vodo knew that the building had once been a Grand Army of the Republic munitions dumpsite. During the Clone Wars, which Vodo still remembered vividly, Coruscant had hundreds of military garrisons throughout the planet to protect from Seperatist attacks. The warehouse had served as a supply base for several nearby garrisons. When the Empire was formed, the munitions had been moved elsewhere, closer to the Imperial palace, where they still remained.

The building had gone up for lease, but had never been renovated. It had fallen into a serious state of disrepair. Vodo noted, with a glint of amusement, that the sign over the main door still reas "FOR LEASE BY THE GAR"

He had also deigned not to enter through the main door, which might attract attention, seeing as the main entrance was located right on the busy street. Instead, he looked down at his holoprojector, which showed a diagram of the building. It indicated that there was a small service door to the side.

Without breaking stride (or hobble) Vodo turned left off the street and headed down a dark alleyway, indicating to the others that they should follow. Once they had reached the side entrance, Vodo turned to Leia, "We need a camera on this door, as well as the alley." He said, pointing to appropriate spots to mount the surveilance devices. Azak and Fraktusk hurriedly began to set up the cams.

Vodo tried the door, but found it was locked. Leia took notice and raised her blaster, firing a single shot at the lock, effectively ending it's long service to this old building.

Vodo stepped inside just as the Gungan and Wookie finished. The building was dark, but that had been expected. Aside from a few dim glowlamps, it was pitch black inside.

An old droid moved around the dusty area, rolling on ancient treads to the nearest glowlamp. With jerky, old robotic arms, it extracted the burnt-out lamp, depositing it into a small bin on it's left arm. Reaching down to that same bin, it picked up an equally worthless lamp and placed it in the socket. The level of ambience was the same as before. The droid to no notice of this and moved on to the next glowlamp, repeating the process.

Other than the droid, Vodo sensed no other being inside the building, save a few rodents who were picking their way over discarded, worthless blaster power packs, and empty storage bins.

Vodo moved across the spacious storage area, to the old turbolift. The doors were half open, and inside was nothing but dust, and a few worthless blaster carbines, discarded ages ago. The others joined him at the lift as he pressed a few keys on the pad next to the door, hoping to open the doors all the way.

Nothing.

Vodo waited some more, but with no results. Finally he turned to Azak, "Can you fix it? This is the only lift in the building." He said, waiting for the Wookie to reply.

Azakhaban shrugged indecisively, and padded over to inspect the turbolift.

As the Wookiee played with the various knobs and dials that controlled the turbolift, Leia took a moment to more closely examine the room they were in. She stopped next to one of the blaster carbines and nudged the outdated gun with the toe of her boot.

"Things must have been pretty hectic, for all of this stuff to just be laying around forgotten in a relatively unsecured building..."

She was interrupted when Azak snorted derisively, and started chuckling. She walked over to see what he was doing, and found that he had taken the control panel out of the wall and had been playing with the wires.

"What is it?" She demanded, her voice raised over the Wookiee's incessant chuckling.

Azak turned and waved a furry paw at her animatedly, as a string of growls emitted from his throat. Vodo and Fraktusk had also walked over to investigate the odd exchange.

"He says the turbolift might work better if we turned it's power on... the wiring is all so old, something must have failed somewhere along the line. He's going to go look into it... since he's a Wookiee, it'll be easiest for him to climb down the shaft."

Azak nodded, and squeezed his tall furry frame through the half open elevator doors to find his way down to the bottom of the shaft.

As Azak dissapeared, Leia turned to Vodo. Ever since the start of the actual mission Vodo had readily taken point several times, and it had quickly become apparent that he had done his homework before they had set out. As such, Leia was perfectly content to let the less experienced Knight lead on, and she simply kept a mindful watch on the details.

"We shouldn't place all of our trust in this one old rusty bucket of a turbolift. While Azak does that, we'd better search for an alternative route... I'm pretty sure a set of stairs is somewhere nearby."

A crash and a howl echoed up the turbolift shaft signifying that Azakhaban had discovered the bottom of the turbolift shaft, though quite unintentionally...

Leia shook her head, and started for the nearest door to see what it held behind it. Even with the aid of the enhanced display projected on the visor of her helmet, Leia still found that it was dark enough in the building to make moving about it a tad difficult. She habitually reached for a glowstick, but abruptly decided against it. With the blaster shot and the howling wookiee, they had already done more than enough to attract the attention of any nearby...

"Let's try to keep a bit quieter now, and don't turn on any lights in rooms with windows to the outside. The Imperials don't regularly patrol this area, but people... or things... do live down here..."

Vodo had come prepared.

He had decided early on to make sure he knew just what they were going to be walking in to, when the arrived on Coruscant, and that included intense studies of all of the buildings and areas surrounding the site of the old Jedi Temple, and what he found was long histories of all of them. This one was no exception.

Other than the fact that it had been a munitions storehous, there was one more peice of interesting information. During the Seperatist attack (led by General Grevious), on Coruscant during the clone wars, this building had sustained a direct hit by the Seperatist ships in orbit, detonating much of the warehouse stockpiles. Later, it had been rebuilt, and had served out the remainder of the war.

Vodo knew that the building, although repaired, had suffered severe structual damage as a result of the blast. He also knew that building material was sparse during that time period, due to the fact that it was in demand for Republic military purposes. Therefore, secondhand material must have been used by the engineers who repaired the building. Vodo knew there was no staircase on this level, but there may be one below...

He turned to Leia, "Let me see your lightsaber." He asked.

She handed it to him and he ignited the blade, the light illuminating the dark area with an errie glow. He didn't bother to explain his theory as he reached out with the Force, feeling it's comforting power surround him. He expanded his Sphere of Responsibility out to ten meters, searching the floor for any unseen cracks. At first he found nothing, just empty space, but then he expanded the sphere out farther, to fifteen meters.

And then he found it.

There was an old crack where the duracreet floor had been repaired. Obviously defective, the duraplaster had never been up to the task of sealing any hole, in any building.

He moved the lightsaber to the crack, cutting downward and following the crack about three meters, and then forming a neat circle. He head loud crumbling noises as the duracrete began to give way.

He threw his arms out, reaching out again with the Force, catching the chunks of artificial rock as the fell to the level below. A minute later he brought the chunks through the hole and set them in a pile a few meters away.

His breathing slightly labored afterwards, Vodo turned to the others, "According to the technical specifics of this level of the building, there is no stairwell here. This level was a command center, and for security purposes, only had one way in or out. The level below has stairs, but in what condition I have no idea."

With that, and with not even a glowlamp, he jumped through the hole.

Frakutsk snickered at Vodo's methods as Vodo jumped down through the hole he had created with Leia's lightsaber. It was, Frakutsk reflected, quite ingenious of him to have devised that the building had that type of structural failure in that specific place. How he did it Frakutsk did not know, but Frakutsk assumed it had something to do with his former residence in this area of Coruscant.

Then, Frakutsk followed Vodo's example. Being a Gungan, and naturally being quite durable, he did not fear he would hurt himself as he tumbled down the hole.

As it turned out, the fall wasn't very far. Frakutsk landed on his feet in a suprisingly dexterous act for a Gungan. Of course, as he stood up, he proceeded to trip on a badly placed wire and topple over. Who put that there?! Frakutsk did not see the wire, of course, because it was completely dark.

"Vodosa?"

Questioned Frakutsk, to make sure Vodo was allright. Vodo grunted an affirmative.

"Hmmm... Itsa dark..."

Vodo again grunted an affirmative.

Frakutsk's eyes began to adjust, but the darkness was so complete that he could not have seen anything if he had been a Gran, much less a Gungan.

The need for light was imminent...

Frakutsk remembered an old force trick that he had studied back at the academy... It had become a personal favourite of Frakutsk's. In fact, one might have said that Frakutsk invented the technique... though it required enormous amounts of study.

Frakutsk felt out around him for the force, feeling its omnipresence in this dark place. Frakutsk bowed his head, closed his eyes, cupped his hands, and concentrated.

Frakutsk drew the force between his hands, in a sphere. He condenced it, he willed it into a more physical existence. And, just had Frakutsk had hoped, it manifested itself in a form natural to it: Light.

The ball in Frakutsk's hand let off a phospherence that illuminated the entire room. Frakutsk had to focus all his energy into maintaining the ball, but the idea was that Vodo would be able to survey the room and find his alleged staircase...

Vodo gave the Gungan a small smile from underneath the cowl of his robe, indicating he approved of the other Jedi's unique ability. Then he turned back, studying the layout of the room they now stood in. It was small, about eight meters across, and was just as dusty and messy as the command center above. Various empty and worthless blaster carbines were strewn about, along with several large cylindrical tanks, that Vodo guess were once stored bacta tanks.

There were two doors, one lead to a much smaller room, the refresher probably. The other door led off into a hallway. Vodo quickly consulted his handheld holoprojector, which displayed the building's layout.

"According to this, the stairs are in the hallway, about thirteen meters from our current position." Vodo said, walking towards the door, and heading into the hallway at a brisk pace, "Come." He said to Fraktusk.

The hallway was empty of any trash, and instead was lined with about eight doors, probably leading off into induvidual munitions storerooms. He found the stairwell easily, prodding the Gungan along, who by now had abandoned his Force light. The two then traveled by the small glow of the holoprojector.

Vodo picked up his comlink as the descended, "Leia, this is Vodo. We have located the stairs, and as far as I can tell so far, they are in reletively good condition," He paused, kicking an empty storage bin out of the way as he reached another landing, "We are heading to surface level. I suggest that you follow as soon as Azakhaban can get the lift working."

After receiving her reply, he stowed the comlink away, moving quickly - and silently - down the stairs.

The stairs themselves were indeed in good condition. Vodo knew from his studies that these stairs were also the only ones in the entire building, and descended down the middle of the warehouse, parallel to the elevator shaft, which also ran down the center. However, their were about forty stories in the entire thing, leaving the two Jedi with a long jog ahead of them.

Might as well start up some conversation... He thought.

He realized that he actually knew very little about the other Jedi. He had come into contact with many Gungans, who after the Battle of Naboo had become more populous in the many aboveground cities on the planet. He had delt with plenty of them during his training, and he found them to be a very delightful and intelligent people. But he, as a personal rule, did not become too close to his fellow padawans. He treated them as collegues, but not necessarily as "friends".

This stemmed from his numerous experiences during the Clone and Galactic Civil Wars. He had seen many friends die, and did not desire to let the happen again.

Because of all of this, he hardly knew anything about his new "collegue". perhaps to pass the time...

"So, Fraktusk," He began, "What made you decide to become a Jedi?"

It was quite a question indeed. What DID make Frakutsk decide to become a Jedi?

Frakutsk himself only barely knew, he remembered being very young on corellia, he remembered a sith...

But then, he remembered joining the Coalition, not becoming a Jedi. He remembered, quite clearly, being far too violent, too angry, albeit at evil.

Then, It seemed to Frakutsk, he discovered his adaptivity with the force... But that made little sense! How could he not have known until then? What exactly WAS it that he remembered on correllia?

Frakutsk took a moment to respond...

"Eh..." he said, hesitently, "Mesa became Jedi not long ago. Mesa realized not until thensa desa truth of Jedi thinking. Mesa must have had powersa of da force before then, though!"

Falling...

Frakutsk paused a moment, he hadn't really answered Vodo's question, and something had just disturbed him...

"Mesa guesses what made mesa be Jedi was da want for peace. In da coalition... Mesa saw death. Mesa be Jedi, suppose, to be a protector of peace in the galaxy. Itsa seemed nes'sary when mesa discovered mesa had da force."

It was quite vague, indeed, but true enough. It alwasy made frakutsk uncomfortable talking about himself... Besides, he hadn't really been around the academy much anyway, constantly being off on missions for the Galactic Coalition, in which he now held the formal title 'Minister of Peace'.

The natural next thing to do was to ask Vodo about HIS reasons for becoming a Jedi. Frakutsk had a feeling Vodo's answer would be no more simple than his.

"And yousa? What made yousa decide to become a Jedi?"

Vodo listened carefully as Fraktusk spoke. The Gungan Jedi's answers were, if anything, vague. It seemed to Vodo that Fraktusk's answers were prepared for anyone who might ask him the question that Vodo just did. It sounded too much like a slogan. It was not necessarily a unique answer.

Voso instantly suspected Fraktusk was keeping the real reason from him, either that or he did not know himself.

He was about to comment on this when Fraktusk asked him the same question in return, "And yousa? What made yousa decide to become a Jedi?"

Vodo instantly felt uneasy. Since he had lived so long, and experienced so much already, his answer would take quite awhile to explain.

Or would it?

"Once, very long ago, it was raining." He said as both Jedi continued to methodically move down the long stairs. Vodo saw on an overhead sign that they were approaching the twenty-sixth floor, "It was raining on Kamino, and it was raining all over the galaxy. Everything was in complete chaos. War and evil reigned. During that time, I looked into the eyes of a doomed Jedi. She was merely an apprentice... but unfortunately she was very well aquainted with war. Not just war, but all the hardships it brought."

He lowered his head slightly as they continued down, "She told me that I could use the Force as she could, but I lacked training. She also told me that I was much too old to begin the training. I asked her what I was to do about it, and she smiled at me, rather grimly, and told me that if and when the Jedi came close to desruction, that I should seek out the Force."

he turned to Fraktusk and gave the other a half-smile, "At least, it was something like that."

They were reaching level twenty now, and Vodo decided to stop for a moment, handing Fraktusk some water as he pulled his comlink out.

"Leia, this is Vodo, we are almost finished with our scouting of the stairwell. We have encountered no one, and have not seen any threat. We will meet you on Level one in fifteen minutes."

He waited for a reply, but received none.

Strange...

He shrugged it off, not feeling any warning signs in the Force. He would have known if she was in any sort of trouble.

Wouldn't he?

He looked back at Fraktusk, deciding to continue his story, "I concluded, after the Empire rose, that I could contribute, at least in some small way, to the prevention of more wars like that one. I want to prevent another Jedi massacre like the one suffered at the hands of Darth Vader. The fates of this galaxy and the Jedi Order are intertwinded. perhaps we can make a difference."

He knew even as he spoke those words, that he still had not completely answered the question. But even so, the two had learned something about the other. And Vodo was surprised to find that they did have something in common.

His thoughts turned now to Leia. He was slightly disturbed that she had no responded. The quicker they joined up, the better.

After acknowledging Vodo's announcement that he and Fraktusk had located the stairs and were going to do a bit more exploring, Leia returned her comlink to a small pouch on her utility belt. Before she could join them, first she had to check up on Azak's progress with the lift...

A quick glance around the dark room assured her that her only other company was the small maintenence droid, which had stopped replacing lightbulbs and was now sitting in one corner of the room near the entrance; inactive. Leia walked over to the turbolift shaft and leaned over the edge slightly, to find herself staring at nothing but pitch black darkness.

Odd. If Azak was down there, wouldn't he have some sort of light on?

"Azak?" Leia called out tentatively, beginning to feel slightly uneasy for reasons she couldn't quite put her finger on. The rough, grating, buzzing quality that the voice modulator in her helmet gave her voice did not let her words carry very far.

Leia reached up to remove her helmet, but hesitated.

What if...

Behind her the little maintenence droid that had thus far been quiet let out a series of loud beeps, causing Leia to jump in surprise and almost lose her balance and fall into the shaft.

Shaken, Leia backed away from the shaft and then turned to see what had caused the little droid's sudden outburst. That's when she sensed a whole group of Force presences moving outside... very close to her current position, and moving closer with unsettling speed.

Uh oh...

Leia's gaze frantically shot around the room, looking for cover. The only ways out were the turbolift shaft: which could only end rather messily, or the hole Vodo had created in the floor... it was halfway across the room from her, between her and the door. She broke for it in a full run.

The presences had gathered around the entrance to the building, and a small pop sounded as the group apparently used small explosives to open the door. The door swung as it was violently kicked in, and Leia skidded to a halt as she suddenly found herself staring into half a dozen bright lights... all of them attached to the muzzles of blaster rifles with armored guards behind them.

"FREEZE!"

Leia had already done so, and realizing that their intentions were hostile she also slowly raised her hands into the air.

"You are trespassing on secure government property, punishable by a fine and time in jail. Remove your helmet and present your name and identification."

Leia sucked in a deep breath of air. Hopefully they didn't know about the others... if they didn't, she could possibly play it out without their presences being noticed as well. For now, she would have to cause this bunch as little trouble as possible, to keep them from having very much reason to become angry...

[Your air is poison to me, I cannot remove my helmet or I will die,] Leia responded in halting Ubese.

"Speak basic!" Snapped the officer who had spoken before. Leia did not respond, and instead shifted her stance uneasily.

"Filthy damn aliens, they come here to make trouble and can't even speak a proper language. Detain him, we'll take him back for processing."

The group of guards entered the room and moved towards Leia. She kept perfectly still, and her compliance was rewarded only with one of the soldiers flipping his weapon around and thrusting the butt end of it into her gut, for no reason other than to be cruel. Leia let out a muffled gurgle, and doubled over in pain as the guards siezed her arms and cuffed them behind her back.

"So you've torn a hole in the floor, too... that's destruction of government property on your tab too."

They frisked her for weapons and anything else of interest, finding only her comlink, a few old field rations that she hadn't realized were still in one pouch of her belt, and a few blank datacards. Thank the Force Vodo had been carrying all of the important stuff... Apparently unhappy with what they found, the detachment of guards roughly led Leia outside and shoved her into the back of an armored patrol speeder.

At least they seemed to think she was alone. Vodo, Azak, and Fraktusk would be safe for now. But how Leia was going to avoid being unmasked was another problem entirely.... She groaned as the speeder started and the building she had just been taken from began to dissapear from sight. She couldn't feel any of her fellow Jedi through the Force... she could only hope that they would handle the new situation wisely.

The Past (Kamino)

"Move! get down!"

Vodo Baas ducked into a small alcove to his left as thirty-six Republic clone troopers rushed past him.

He peered around the wall and watched them as they charged full force into an incoming swarm of battle droids. Droids bearing the symbol of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.

The battle between the two forces was short.

The Clones fired point-blank into the droids, destroying dozens of them. But to Vodo, it looked like for every droid destroyed, ten more replaced it.

The Republic was being overwhelmed. They needed something more to defeat the Confederacy on Tipoca City.

The droids broke through the Republic lines, storming through the city. But for the young munitions supply administrator crouching in a darkened alcove, it looked like all was lost. He prepared himself for death as three droids found him, dragging him out of his hiding spot.

"Captain, what are we going to do about the civilians?" One droid asked another.

"Our orders are to destroy all of them." Was the reply.

The droid who spoke first aimed his blaster rifle down at Vodo's head, preparing to kill him. Vodo looked up into the barrel as the emotionless droid squeezed the trigger.

He threw up his hands, trying to ward off his impending doom.

To his astonishment, the droid aiming at him flew back, as if thrown by some unseen wind. Vodo stared in amazement even as the other droid, the commander, aimed his weapon at Vodo, preparing to finish the job.

And in an instant, the droids met their match.

A lightsaber hummed. The droids fell.

Present

Vodo let loose a small, almost inaudible sigh, suddenly wishing he could somehow forget how to remember.

They had reached the bottom of the building, and now were making their way through the dark, rubble-strewn street of Coruscant.

This was the planet the Empire did not wish for people to see. The dank, smelly part of their crown jewel.

Vodo pointed his stick, "We can enter the temple through those ducts, as you suggested."

He pointed to several different spots, "Here is where we can set up surveillance cameras and motion detectors. We should get to work while we wait for Leia to get here.”

So the began to set up their equipment where they had previously decided was the best spots. They had all the angles of their chosen entry point covered by cameras, as well as the landing spot they had designated for their ship.

They knew they would need to get their ship down here to load all of the artifacts they expected to find. And Vodo had conducted extensive research into the area to figure out where they would be able to land their ship.

Their chosen spot was the site of a long-destroyed vent pipe that now leaked vapor into the atmosphere. Vodo looked up into the darkness as the long thin wisp of steam curled up into the sky.

The destroyed pipe was a part of the old temple, which now lay in ruins.

Vodo picked up his commlink again, this time trying to reach Azak, “Azakhaban. This is Vodo, what is your current position?”

He heard a long, angry growl, “[In the room with the hole. Leia is gone.]”

Vodo’s blood turned to ice. Fraktusk looked upset a few feet away, “Gone? What do you mean?”

“[I saw Stormtroopers arrest her and escort her away. They just left.]” Was the reply.

“Follow them, and let me know where they go. But do not attempt a rescue. Watch them carefully. I’m sending Fraktusk to join you. He will get her out… of wherever she gets placed.” Vodo said.

The Wookie acknowledged. Vodo looked at Fraktusk carefully, “I will remain here and search the temple, and try to complete our mission. But one thing is certain; we cannot stay on Coruscant much longer. And Leia will die if they find out who she is. They are probably throwing her into jail for a few hours, before interrogating her. Get to her before they do.”

He pulled Leia’s lightsaber out, tossing it to the Gungan, “And make sure she gets this back.”

Frakutsk caught the lightsaber, frowning.

He did not like the way this was going.

"But wheresa be de jailsa??" asked Frakutsk, assuming Vodo would know from his past experiances on the planet.

He did. He pointed. "Now get going!"

Frakutsk nodded and was off.

The dark lower streets of Coruscant were not crowded, which was good, for a Gungan running in such a hurry was likely to be noticed. Clearly, things had just gotten alot more complicated.

As Frakutsk wound through the streets, he was able to reflect on what his plan would be once he found the jail. He didn't have one, he discovered. Though there was a definate appeal to putting a hole in the wall with his lightsaber, Frakutsk figured that the authorities woulden't take too kindly to it. They did want to actually complete their mission, after all.

Before Frakutsk realized it, he had reached the jail, a solid building. Frakutsk slowed down approached

The entrance to the jail was definately high-security, as was clear by the heavy double doors. Thinking quickly, Frakutsk pulled his hood over his face, hoping that the neutral robes he was wearing would bear some intiminating quality. He had a plan, or at least so he thought.

Then, Frakutsk entered the building.

It was late at night, and only one person, a human, was on duty. He was awake enough, but it was the sixth hour of his shift, he was staring at the chrono, just fifteen more minutes before he could get some well-needed sleep.

He noticed Frakutsk.

He was clearly taken aback, who woulden't take unkindly to such an intrusion- especially 5 minutes before their shift ended. He was about to reach for the alarm, when he realized that there was no reason for him to do so.

"Whadaya want?"

Frakutsk glanced down the hall, noticing a cell number 005-4b

Frakutsk did not respond right away, reaching into the force took concentration. Then he spoke, and as he did so, used the force to alter the sound waves, slowing them down to a relative halt.

The result was an inhumanly low version of Frakutsk's voice, Frakutsk did the best he could to supress in gungan speech.

"Interrogation. Cell 200-3c."

The man glanced at his list, seeing a new addition '2:00- Interrogator.'

Perhaps he would have noticed the difference between a cell number and a chrono reading... if he wasn't so tired and hadn't been infuenced otherwise through the force. Perhaps he would have thought to check the interrogater's papers... if he weren't done with his shift in 4 minutes and hadn't been infuenced otherwise through the force.

"Yeah, sure." he said. 3 minutes.

And Frakutsk passed. Now, all he had to do find Leia, and get out.

The hole in the wall still sounded good.

As it turned out, Leia was being held in cell 050-3b, and it only took Frakutsk a few minutes to find her. After all, to them, she was only a vandal.

Afraid to make any noise, Frakutsk motioned for Leia to be silent, and gave her back her lightsaber.

Surely, a Jedi Master could escape from this cell with her lightsaber. Frakutsk motioned to the wall questioningly, it was clear what he ment: 'Do you have any better idea, or should we just cut our way out through the wall? '
