GDI Takeover of Byss
<b<Location: Byss System, Fleet Command Ship Invincible (Imperial Star Destroyer Mark 2)[/b]
It was time. The GDI was ready to make their fist move, and they knew exactly where to make it. On the bridge of the Imperial Star Destroyer Invincible, Supreme Commander Isstal turns to his second in command.
“Has the task force arrived?”
“They’re entering the system now sir. Shall I open a channel?”
“Affirmative, and prepare my vessel for flight. I will be joining them shortly.” The task force Isstal spoke of was in actuality three ships from Isstal’s fleet. The sleek Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser Defiance, flanked by two Nebulon B2 Modified Frigates, Rainmaker and Indictment was on final approach into the system. Together the three ships were a formidable force, and with the small fleet playing their war games nearby it should be more than enough. This was a diplomatic mission anyway; the warships were just for show.
“Sir, the channel is open.” Isstal turns from the viewports and activates his com unit.
“Task Force Omega, welcome to the Byss system. I trust you had a good trip out?”
“Excellent, supreme commander. We’re ready for you whenever you’re ready to come aboard.”
“I’ll be there shortly commander.” He turns to the captain of his Star Destroyer. “Captain, you have command. Show them,” he glances out the viewport, “the power of the Galactic Defence Initiative.”
“As ordered, supreme commander.” Isstal smiles and makes his way down from the bridge.
Location: Galactic Defence Initiative capital planet New Alderaan, Galactic Core
The scenes showing the departure of Omega group fade from the public viewing screens and are replaced by the face of an alien newscaster. She is speaking basic.
“The task force is bound for the Byss system, where a portion of our fleet is already engaged in friendly war games with various galactic factions. Early rumours speculate that they are hoping to bring Byss into the GDI. Whether they intend to do this through diplomacy or through force remains to be seen, but from what we have seen our on-station fleet is more than enough to overwhelm the Alderanni defences should it come to that. We now go live to Supreme Commander Isstal aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Invincible, currently in the Byss system.” The newscaster’s face is replaced by a scene aboard the Invincible. Isstal is standing in front of the podium. He clears his throat and begins to speak.
“Citizens of the Galactic Defence Initiative.” He begins. “Today we embark on a new mission. A mission of peace. We are sending Omega Force to Byss, where the greater portion of our fleet is engaged in war games, to negotiate with the Alderanni people. We are setting out to create an alliance between our peoples and bring Byss into the GDI. Should we succeed our fleet capacity and power will be greatly enhanced.
We have made it our goal not to fail. Our on-station fleet is ready, and should diplomacy fail we are ready and willing to move in with a fleet to secure the planet. Let me make clear that this will only happen should all avenues fail. We will secure Byss’s position in the Galactic Defence Initiative. I am reluctant to say at any cost, because there is a cost to high, but we will do our best. Hopefully the next time you see Omega Force in orbit they will have returned from Byss successful, and we will have added a planet to our small empire. Should we fail… I do not want to speak of failure. Should we fail, however, and our fleet returns in shambles, we will try again. We will remain strong and not waver. Wish us the best of luck on our mission.”
The scene cuts out to show people in the streets of New Alderaan cheering, then cuts back to the Invincible hanger decks to see fighter pilots and techs also cheering. The broadcast ends with the GDI logo blanking out everything.
<b<Location: Byss System, Fleet Command Ship Invincible (Imperial Star Destroyer Mark 2)[/b]
As he approaches he sees that his fighter is ready. Excellent. The tech that had been working on it approaches and salutes.
“Sir, your ship is ready to launch.” Isstal returns the salute and thanks the man, then climbs into his fighter. He lifts off and pushes the throttle forward, shooting out towards the small group of ships making their way through the fleet towards Byss.
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser)
The fighter lands and Supreme Commander Isstal steps out. He drops to the ground and walks quickly towards his private chambers. As he does, he lifts his comlink to his mouth.
“Commander, inform me when we reach Byss, I wish to speak to them directly.” He enters his chambers and collapses on the bed. He had been on the bridge of Invincible for a good ten hours directing fleet movement. He doesn’t even bother to take off his clothes before falling asleep.
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser)
Isstal is jarred out of his rest by the general alarm buzzer. A voice is calling for action stations and fighter pilots to get to their ships. Isstal jumps up and grabs his com.
“Commander, what is going on?” he demands, angry.
“Sorry sir. The ship has been engaged by two Corellian Corvettes.” Isstal curses.
“Captain, do not engage those ships. I repeat, do not engage those ships. We’re here on a diplomatic mission, not to start a war.”
“Negative sir, they’re joining the formation.” Isstal breaths a sigh of relief.
“Cancel the alarm, Commander. I’ll be up shortly.” Isstal changes quickly into his dress uniform and goes to the bridge. The two Corellian Corvettes are indeed in formation, flying slightly ahead of the Mon Cal cruiser. The small task force takes up a position in orbit and waits for the planetary government to respond to their calls.
Finally a face appears on the com screen.
“What is it?” the snarling alien demands.
“We wish to speak with your leader,” Isstal responds coolly, not at all frightened.
“He’s… busy.” The alien responds. “You will speak with me.” Isstal is now a tad annoyed.
“Listen here, you. You’re going to go get your leader, and I’m going to speak with him, or I will pound your palace flat.” It was an idle threat; of course, Isstal was not the kind of man who would kill innocents to get his way. He was not like the Empire. It was evidently enough to convince the alien, because moments later he… she… it, was back, this time with a small balding man in tow.
“I am Supreme Commander Isstal of the Galactic Defence Initiative. Are you the governor here?” He asks.
“I am,” the man responds. From the look of him he had just woken up.
“I am interested in bringing Byss into the GDI. May I come down?” The man thinks for a moment, then says: “No, but we can continue to talk.”
“Okay, let’s talk.” Isstal smiles.
“Why would I want to bring Byss into the GDI?” the man asks.
“See that fleet out there?” Isstal motions to the GDI fleet.
“We have it on our screens, yes. War games, I understand.”
“Have you been paying close attention?” Isstal asks, his smile growing.
“We have watched some”
“The fleet that has one two out of three matches is only a small portion of the GDI armada.”
“Very impressive, I’m sure, but that does not explain why we should join you.”
“Let me finish, governor. If you bring your planet into the GDI, we get a number of things. First off, we double our resources and fleet capacity. Secondly, you acquire a defensive fleet and allies.
Thirdly, you enjoy the influence of the GDI in everything you do. We make a powerful ally, governor. You will not be disappointed in bringing your planet into our group.”
The governor though for a while, then said: “We will have to discuss this more. You will land at the palace.” The screen goes blank.
“Well, that was interesting. I guess we’ll be going to ground then.” Isstal turns. “My fighter?”
“Prepped and ready for immediate departure, Supreme Commander.”
“Excellent. Have a squadron of TIE Defenders escort. We’re going down in style, captain.”
Location: Byss System, Royal Palace
The TIEs follow their slower X-wing escort into the atmosphere of Byss. In the cockpit, Isstal smiles and tune his com into the local radio station. There is a broadcast on about the war games. It ends, and is replaced with a report on the small military group in orbit. It is off limit to civilian vessels, and the reporter speculates that it is a military group interested in raiding the planet. There are rumours of negotiations with the governor. Isstal turns off the radio and brings his ship around for a neat landing on the limited space provided. The X-wings break off and return to their base, wherever that may be.
Supreme Commander Isstal jumps down from his fighter and beings to walk towards the large doorway. Two guards meet him there.
“Follow us, please, sir.” Isstal does as he is asked and follows the guards into the building.
Location: Byss System, Royal Palace, control centre
The planetary governor stands in the control room of the palace.
“Sir, this Commander Isstal has arrived.”
“Give him an hour to shower and eat, tell him I will meet with him at my connivance. This is our turf, and I’ll be damned if I let him shove us around.”
“You are not interested in an allegiance with this man?”
“Never. I don’t want to be drawn into any war he may cause.” The guards nods and leaves the room, mentally cursing the governor.
Location: Byss System, Royal Palace, conference room
“And I’m sure it would be mutually beneficial.” Isstal finishes his first speech to the governor, who nods.
“Are you convinced?” Isstal asks.
“I’m afraid not,” the governor responds, shaking his head. “You see, a higher power has informed me of the inherit risks of an alliance with a group such as the Galactic Defence Initiative. I know you mean well, but the risk factor is to great.”
“May I ask what risks, governor?” Isstal says, mildly surprised.
“We could be drawn into a war, attacked, maybe destroyed. No, the risk is to high. Much to high…”
“Might I remind you that the GDI is here to help you and defend you against attackers?” Isstal points out.
“But we have no enemies, and an alliance with you could jeopardize that.”
“It might, but you would have protection. As it stands now should someone with even a small fleet by galactic standards show up there is nothing you could do.”
“We have defences.” Isstal turns on his data-pad.
“Two Corellian Corvettes, one Nebulon-B cruiser, and five squadrons of X-wing fighters. Hardly even a task force, let alone a defensive fleet, governor.”
“We have no reason to be attacked.”
“On the contrary, governor. There is much to be desired here. Natural recourses, starship facilities, fighter hangers.” Isstal counts off the reasons someone may want to invade the planet.
“Look at it this way, governor. If you refuse, I can easily call my fleet in and invade the planet with force. It is not the way I would hope to capture the planet, but it is an alternative.
If you’d rather I leave and return with a fleet to capture Byss, then I will do so and stop wasting my time talking to you.” Isstal stands to leave.
“Wait! I’m not promising anything, but maybe we can continue to talk?” Isstal smiles.
“Then let us talk.” He says, sitting.
“Over lunch?” The governor asks.
“Gladly.” The governor rings for a droid, which is sent to get food from the kitchens. As it returns, an aid dashes into the room. He is panting and out of breath.
“Sir! An fleet has arrived in system!” he gasps.
“I am fully aware of the presence of the GDI fleet in orbit, lieutenant.”
“No sir, another fleet.” He pants.
“Isstal! What is this? Another fleet?” the governor accuses.
“I promise you I do not know! It is not my fleet!” he turns to the officer. “Lieutenant, on screen!” the man nods and activates the holographic displays around the room.
They show a small fleet manoeuvring into position around the planet. Portions are firing on Alderanni defence ships. The GDI task force is off to one side, out of fire but ready to move in if ordered.
Isstal grabs his comlink.
“Task Force Omega, engage the bandits. If they back off let them go.” He switches frequencies. “Invincible, move in system and prepare to engage bandits at mark 8-6. Copy?”
“Sir, we’re occupied. The opposing fleet-” Isstal cuts the man off.
“Are they hostile?”
“No sir, war games-”
“No time. Bring the fleet in. Apologize to the enemy commander and get in here!”
Isstal switches back to the Omega’s frequency.
“Sir, bandits are departing. Permission to peruse?”
“Denied, commander. Invincible has them on screen.” The holo display zooms in on the Imperial Star Destroyer, which is now firing on the vessels. A corvette that Isstal did know the class of was on fire, and the Relentless was pounding a Nebulon B frigate into dust.
“Invincible! Status!”
“The enemy is destroyed, commander. Zero loss of life. Permission to return to the games?”
“Granted. Happy hunting.” The screens in the room go dark as the fleet moves away from the planet.
The governor is fuming.
“Isstal! What the hell was that?” he screeches.
“You think that that was my fleet?” he asks, stunned. After all he had just done… “You honestly think that I would stage an attack and destroy my own vessels for a measly alliance? I could invade this planet in minutes, hell, I have a fleet five minutes out. This planet could be mine within the hour if I were to order it so!” It wasn’t often that Isstal swore. Something had evidently touched a nerve. “I just saved you and this planet from what’s probably the deadliest force that’s ever attacked you here. Where would you be if my fleet hadn’t been here to defend you?” He sat back down and got control of his breathing. The governor was astonished. They both sit silently for a few minutes before Isstal stands and leaves the room.
Location: Galactic Defence Initiative capital planet New Alderaan, Galactic Core
Another day, another broadcast. The newscaster, a different one from the last time, spoke about the failing negotiations.
“What little information we have points to the fact that the GDI’s negations are failing. From the Omega Force flagship Defiance, Supreme Commander Isstal gave the following statement.” The screen switches to the cruiser’s briefing room. Isstal enters and clears his throat.
“Citizens of the Galactic Defence Initiative. I would be lying if I told you that negotiations were going well. The fact is, they’re not. We will continue to negotiate, though at this point even I have my doubts. If worst comes to worst I will mobilize the fleet, Byss is more important to us that anyone realizes. Wish us luck as we continue to talk with the governor.” The screen went to black.
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser)
Isstal finishes his statement and turns away from the holocams.
“Well done sir, it was flawless. When the time comes for us to invade we will have the support of the people.”
“If, we invade, commander. IF we invade.” Isstal responds, shredding his dress coat.
“Come, sir. Do you honestly believe that these negotiations will achieve anything?”
“In all honestly… No. But we must continue to talk. There is always an alternative to war. It is only a matter of finding it.”
“When are talks due to resume?” he asks.
“Tomorrow, 10:00 local time.” Isstal sighs. “I’m not looking forward it, that’s for sure. I’ve fully given up on trying to convince him to sign on.”
“What are we going to do, sir? Are we invading?”
“No, I’m going to get him to call an election of the people. Let them decide.”
“And if he refuses?”
“Full scale invasion. It’s his choice.”
“What if they vote and the motion if rejected?”
“Then we leave.”
“We leave? That easy?”
“It’s the condition, if he doesn’t accept…”
“It’s an all or nothing wager. Are you sure you’re willing to go that far, sir?”
“We have no choice, commander. I do not want to have to invade them.”
“We have more than enough ships. It would be an easy task, sir.”
“Yes, but it gives us a bad name. We are a lightside group, we do not want to be seen as the invaders of innocent worlds.”
“Even if it is justified?”
“Some people will not see that justification. Trust me.”
“As you say, commander.”
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser)
Isstal awakes to the sound of an alarm. He snaps awake, alert. This is not an emergency alarm, however. It is his room’s buzzer.
“Hold on!” he snaps, pulling his pants on. The door opens with a soft hum and the commander walks in.
“Sir, a shuttle is requesting landing. They claim to be transporting the governor.” Isstal thinks for his moment.
“Let them land. Send a squadron of troops and escort them to my conference room. I want you and Terri there as well.” Terri was the on-ship diplomat, a retired professional who dispensed advice and did the odd negotiation. Isstal had found her on one of his trips, and she had signed on as Junior Diplomat to the Star Destroyer Invincible. Since then she had retired twice, coming back both times, and was now stationed with Isstal as Senior Advisor and Diplomat.
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser), conference room
Terri arrived directly ahead of the Alderanni party. She took her position behind Isstal and whispered in his ear, “Play it cool, Commander. This is our turf.” He nods and puts on a fake smile as the Alderanni party enters.
“Governor, a pleasure to see you.” He says, standing and shaking the man’s hand. “Allow me to introduce my aid, Terri, and my second-in-command.” The governor shakes each of their hands, and then takes his seat at the other end of the table.
“I do not know why I have bothered to come, commander, Byss will not join the Galactic Defence Initiative. We have decided.” He says.
“But have the people decided, governor?”
“I do not understand. The council has decreed that we do not join you.”
“I have a proposition for you, governor. It is an all or nothing deal.”
“I’m listening.”
“We set an election of the people, a referendum if toy will. The people vote on whether to join the GDI or not.”
“And if you win?”
“Then Byss joins the Galactic Defence Initiative as a member.”
“And if you lose, what do we gain?” the governor asks, sneering. “You will simply invade us and takeover with force.”
“That is the trick. If we lose, we will leave. Byss will be left on it’s own, and will here no more of the GDI.”
“All or nothing, as you said.”
“Exactly, governor. It is a good deal.”
“What if we refuse the referendum?”
“Then we continue to talk. And as I have already told you, when talks fail we invade. It is an eventuality we are hoping to avoid, of course.”
“Of course,” the governor repeats mockingly. “You will have your referendum, then commander. The people will vote one month from today.”
“And I am free to move about the planet?”
“Yes, as a party in an vote you have a visa for the time leading up to and including the date of the vote.”
“It is a pleasure doing business with you, governor. My troops will escort you to your shuttle. I insist.”
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser), conference room
“I think that went well,” Isstal says, taking a sip of his drink.
“We achieved what we wanted, anyway. We have our vote.”
“Now it is only a matter of winning it.” Isstal sighs. “It’ll be tough.”
“Not as bad as you might think, commander,” Terri says. “We’ve got a fighting chance now.” Isstal just nods and sips his drink again.
“Is it true what you said, sir? That we’ll back off if we lose the vote?”
“Of course, commander. We have an obligation and we have signed an agreement. We are bound by it.”
“But the Mercenaries aren’t.”
“What are you implying, commander?”
“I was merely suggesting that if this vote fails we could enlist the aid of the mercenaries to attack them.”
“Absolutely not! I an appalled that you would even suggest such a thing, commander!”
“I’m sorry sir, it’s just that…” he trailed off.
“Just what, commander? That we don’t stand a chance?” he asks.
“Well, yes sir. You must admit that we will be hard pressed to win this thing.”
“Of course, but we can do it.” Terri says. She has been deeply immersed in her data-pad.
“Supreme Commander, you will have to make some speeches and public appearances. We can broadcast the feeds from the war games and from the battle.” Isstal smiled. With Terri on his side his diplomatic options were far greater.
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser), private quarters
Isstal sits at his desk going over the data from the previous day’s war games. His fleet was getting steadily better. They had improved in both reaction time and efficiency, and casualties (simulated, of course) had hit a record low. Tomorrow he would join them, and the next day he was due to make a speech in front of 10 000 citizens of Byss.
He goes over the last data-tape, a detailed analysis of the battle from one of Invincible’s experts, and goes to bed. It would be a long month.
<b<Location: Byss System, Fleet Command Ship Invincible (Imperial Star Destroyer Mark 2)[/b]
Supreme Commander Isstal watches the battle outside the viewports. The fleet was split down the middle, the Invincible taking half the cruisers and fighters while the Imperial Star Destroyer (mark two) Interrogator played aggressor with the other half.
So far Isstal’s portion was winning. The gunboats had scored massive damage to the opposing fleet’s smaller vessels and the TIEs, in conjunction with the Nebulon B2 Modified Frigates had managed to disable a portion of the enemy mid-class vessels. Isstal watches as the Invincible moves forward and engages the Interrogator, opening fire with all available weapons. The computers show both vessels faltering under the constant strain. But Isstal has an advantage; the Victory Star Destroyer (mark two) is on his side, and its missile batteries are on-line. They target the ‘enemy’ ship and fire their warheads. The computers beep in excitement as the virtual shields collapse and
non-existent flames appear. Blood red letters scroll across the screen: VESSEL DISABLED. A detailed diagnostic appears, showing shields, hyperspace engines, and life support to be down. Isstal smiles grimly.
“Open a channel.”
The channel is opened.
“Commander. I trust you had fun?” he asks, smiling. The other man’s face appears on his screen. The man is surprised to find who he had been battling, but recovers quickly.
“Of course, Supreme Commander. I admit, commanding an ImpStar Deuce is a lot tougher than they make it look.”
“I’m glad you approve, commander. It just might be your next post.” The commander was in fact a captain stationed a Nebulon-B2 Modified Frigate. He had picked a bad day to command, however. Supreme Commander Isstal was the most respected commander in the Galactic Defence Initiative.
”Thank you, sir. You are an excellent strategist. The way you used those gunships was outstanding.”
“Why thank you, commander. It’s really just a hobby of mine. Since I was a boy I have enjoyed commanding fleets. Of course, back then a fleet was little more than some toys and a few friends.” The other man laughed.
Location: Byss System, Central Plaza
Supreme Commander Isstal stands in front of 10 000 citizens of Byss for what is said to be the biggest event since the celebration following the fall of the Galactic Empire. Holocams are set up at key points to send the speech to all corners of the planet. People and aliens all over are tuning in to watch the event unfold. The governor is seated between two aides, who are whispering things in both ears. He will not be speaking this day, but he is required to be present.
At the podium, Supreme Commander Isstal clears his throat. Silence. Dead silence. He begins his speech.
“Citizens of Byss. I am Supreme Commander Isstsl. I come before you today to discuss the issue of membership in the Galactic Defence Initiative. It is an important decision, and I ask that you listen closely to what I have to say,” Behind him on huge screens are stills from the engagement over the planet a month ago.
“Tomorrow you will vote whether or not to join the Galactic Defence Initiative, and we ask that you make this choice fully informed of what it means.
“Joining us means an alliance and a protective force. It means ships and soldiers to defend you from harm. It means a place an empire, an empire of free worlds.
“If you decide to join us you have our guaranteed protection, and the protection of our allies. We are not here to use you; we will not put a soldier on every corner and turn this planet into a garrison. Joining the Galactic Defence Initiative will be mutually beneficial. Everyone stands to profit from it. Trade and export will be increased, and new job opportunities will open up. Some of you may become officers or pilots in our navy or office workers in our administration centre.
Some of you would be employed building starships in our orbital shipyards, currently awaiting approval to build. We are here to serve you, and we have no hidden agenda or motives. We are here to increase the peace in the galaxy.
Should you decide not to join us, we will leave. Your planet will be open to attack from the Sith or other groups, and we will not be here to defend you. Those ships you have seen in orbit, and those conducing war games nearby all belong to the GDI. They are but a portion of our fleet. We make powerful enemies, and even more powerful friends. Do the right thing tomorrow.”
Isstal turns away from the crowd. It is silent for a moment, and then the cheers break out. At that moment, Istal’s heart lifts. As the cheers echo, he knows that he has won. Byss is his.
Location: Byss System, Omega Force command ship Defiance (Mon Calamari MC90 cruiser), private quarters
Isstal watches the tapes of his speech. As he does so, he realizes just how great it really was. It was written by the three diplomats on board, with some help from almost everybody on the ship, of course. The finished product was worthy of Leia Organa Solo. Terri had told him that it was all in the delivery, and watching the tapes he couldn’t help but believe her. It was quite a speech, and an even better delivery. The cheering had gone on for a solid ten minutes before it finally calmed enough to allow Isstal to thank them all. He knew that he had to thank both Terri and his second-in-command again, maybe buy them expensive gifts.
Location: Byss System, Central Plaza
The vote results were due to be in two hours, and Isstal was to be on the planet for them. He slept for a half hour, then woke and quickly got into his uniform and boarded his fighter for the trip down. It was a ceremony, much greater than the one that New Alderaan had gone through when the results of that vote came in. Isstal smiles as the other guests arrive. The governor looks sullen, he knows that the GDI has won. Not officially, of course, but everyone knows. The cheers from the previous day spoke for themselves. He also knows that Isstal’s first move will be to fire him and replace him with his own man. He had a chip with his letter of resignation in his pocket, just in case. The chatter dies down and eventually reaches silence as the alien in charge of the election steps forward. She speaks into the microphone in her glassy voice.
“Citizens of Byss. I have before me the results of the vote. I will read them now.” She pauses, mostly for effect. “In this referendum the population votes 97% in favour of joining the Galactic Defence Initiative.” Massive cheering breaks out from all over the world as people hear the news.
Location: Byss System, Royal Palace
The governor approaches Supreme Commander Isstal.
“I suppose I’ll be leaving then.” He says, not looking at the man.
“Whatever do you mean, governor?” Isstal asks, surprised.
“Well, you’re firing me aren’t you?”
“Why would you think that? You are a valuable man, governor.”
“But-”
“No, get back to your office and get to work. My people will help you. I am leaving an aide here to report your progress, and he does have command, but you are still the leader here, governor. I am not here to control the planet, it is still a free world.”
“I see. I want to apologize. I was wrong in not wanting Byss to join the GDI. It is for the betterment of all of us. I see that now.”
“Excellent. I will be leaving this week. My fleet will remain, their exercises are not yet completed.”
Location: Galactic Defence Initiative capital planet New Alderaan, Galactic Core
The first newscaster is back, relating the story of Byss. She is speaking of the final vote results.
“And in a landslide, Byss has voted to join the Galactic Defence Initiative. GDI forces are now setting up a permanent garrison on the planet.”
