OOC: Thread for multiple new GC R&Ds, the first of which is the Sabre Assault Bomber.

CN-1344 was a small hidden world in Unknown Regions, its location known only to those within the Galactic Coalition. Hidden inside an area full of black holes and nebulas, CN-1344 was the centre of Galactic Coalition Research and Development. Here new design concepts were tried, tested and either returned to the drawing board or put into construction. The newest ship from each design class was built here and put through rigorous tests before moving out to the rest of the galaxy and before being produced in other shipyards. Currently numerous ships were being built and tested here. However today was an important day for numerous engineers who had been labouring on one task for many years, doing their best to make the perfect bomber, equipped with the latest technologies. Most recently it had been upgraded with pulse shielding, courtesy of Second Wave technologies. Now, well after General Gordon Fren had suggested the production of such a vessel, the Sabre Assault Bomber was ready.

The first of its kind to be designed and used by the Galactic Coalition, it was a dedicated target, designed to hit large targets and pound them into dust. Equipped with 4 Cren Munitions Destroyer – class General Projectile Launchers and one Cren Munitions Thermal Detonator Drop Chute, it was capable of dealing out a massive amount of damage to any target. To even out the rest of its armaments were 2 ion cannons and a quad laser cannon turret, providing protection against enemy fighters.

Commander John Durling and an expanded Nova Squadron had been brought in to do the tests on the first squadron of Sabre Assault Bombers. Because of the increased crew compliments new members had been trained up to the levels of Nova Squadron and added to the squadron, so that they could be used to test out the newest of the new in Galactic Coalition Bombers.

When Commander Durling has first looked over the new bombers they had impressed him immediately. While energy demands meant that they had weak shields, they had good armour and pulse shields, plus more speed than one would expect from a ship of that size. That, combined with the punch the bomber was capable of delivering meant that he was very impressed with the bomber.

He eased the ship out of the dry dock that it was situated in and waited for the rest of the squadron to likewise come up behind him and form up. Then he kicked in the thrusters and felt himself being pushed against his seat, even with the internal compensator on. He immediately swung the ship to starboard and then pulled back in a tight loop, followed by a cut to port and a barrel roll. While not as manoeuvrable as a Kriss fighter or the SAB/SSFs that his squadron had been forced to fly recently, it still had decent manoeuvrability. Glancing at his sensor board he smiled when he noticed that his squadron was still with him.

“All right squadron, arm primary launchers with ACMs and secondary ones with SMs. Also prep drop chutes.”

“Yes sir.” Came the chorused reply.

He flew up to the first target, a 2 kilometre long asteroid. Once it came into range his co-pilot launched a pair of ACMs (Advanced Concussion Missiles) at the asteroid. Around him the rest of the squadron similarly launched their missiles and then followed his lead by flying about the growing explosion to cross over the asteroid. As looked at the feed coming in from a probe standing nearby he noticed that a massive section of the asteroid was missing and many pieces had broken off behind his bombers. Then his bombardier launched a pair of SMs (Sonic Missiles) at the asteroid, soon joined by 22 other SMs. This created a massive shockwave, causing even more destruction. Dodging the shockwave Commander Durling brought his bomber back in line for the last part of the asteroid. Here his bombardier released a massive salvo of Class A thermal detonators, 20 in total, the maximum amount possible in one run. Then John was past the asteroid and the rest of his squadron was pulling out of their bombing runs and following him.

They then flew on to the second target, the bow section of an old Victory – class Star Destroyer that had been destroyed in some past battle. The Galactic Coalition had towed it here, repaired the bow to give it better armour, and now used it to test out new weapons and craft. However, before they could get there they had to pass through a series of training droids, designed to simulate flying through a screen of enemy fighters. As they entered the field they began to take many hits. However immediately Commander Durling turned on the Pulse Shielding, giving the ship complete protection for a split second, while the ships ion cannons and quad laser cannons began to attack the training droids. Equipped with low level lasers and high-powered shields they wouldn’t be able to be destroyed by the weapons being fired at them, nor could they damage the bombers. The bombers passed through the screen, all signifying that they were intact although many had “lost” their shields.

Through that obstacle, the bombers moved in on the bow of the Victory Star Destroyer. Surrounding the bow was more training droids, designed to simulate the weapons of the VSD.

“All ships, load launchers with SHs (“Sleeper” Harpoons).”

“Copy that.”

As the bombers approached Durling noticed that his Pulse shields would soon be recharged.

“Cut speed and then accelerate again once we get within optimum firing range of the VSD.”

“Yes sir.”

Durling cut his speed down by 20% and watched as his Pulse shields recharged some more. Slower than before, but still traveling at great speed, he watched as he game into maximum firing range of the VSD. Its “forward cannons” came to bear on him, firing shots that were easy to dodge at such a distance. However, as he came closer, the shots began to get closer and closer. Finally he reached their optimum firing range and slammed down on the accelerator, dodging the set of shots that were aimed at him and his squadron and causing the guns to have to react to his sudden increase in acceleration. As they began to get the hang of his new speed, and he closed to point-blank range, his co-pilot fired off his first to missiles before beginning to pull up, allowing the next two missiles to fire off. Once he had registered that the missiles were away he pulled his craft through an impressive array of evasive techniques, and triggered the pulse shields at exactly the right moment to avoid what would have been a devastating salvo. Meanwhile his co-pilot and gunner had been firing the ion cannons and quad laser cannon at the training droids. As he got out of the range of the guns, he turned to head back for CN-1344. Once there he put the SAB through a series of atmospheric manoeuvres, noticing the decrease in manoeuvrability in the atmosphere before docking again. There he learned that the “Sleeper” Harpoons had performed as expected and would have knocked out anyone in the bow of the VSD, allowing GC troops to be able to board easier. As well, numerous of the weapons emplacements on the bow of the VSD would have been taken out in his attack, either through laser and ion cannon fire or through the “Sleeper” Harpoons. The test mission was complete and the Sabre Assault Bomber had performed admirably.
