OOC: Thread for multiple new GC R&Ds, the first of which is the Sabre Assault Bomber.

CN-1344

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

CN-1344 was a small hidden world in Unknown Regions, its location known only to those within the Galactic Coalition. Hidden inside an area full of black holes and nebulas, CN-1344 was the centre of Galactic Coalition Research and Development. Here new design concepts were tried, tested and either returned to the drawing board or put into construction. The newest ship from each design class was built here and put through rigorous tests before moving out to the rest of the galaxy and before being produced in other shipyards. Currently numerous ships were being built and tested here. However today was an important day for numerous engineers who had been labouring on one task for many years, doing their best to make the perfect bomber, equipped with the latest technologies. Most recently it had been upgraded with pulse shielding, courtesy of Second Wave technologies. Now, well after General Gordon Fren had suggested the production of such a vessel, the Sabre Assault Bomber was ready.

<o:p></o:p>

The first of its kind to be designed and used by the Galactic Coalition, it was a dedicated target, designed to hit large targets and pound them into dust. Equipped with 4 Cren Munitions Destroyer – class General Projectile Launchers and one Cren Munitions Thermal Detonator Drop Chute, it was capable of dealing out a massive amount of damage to any target. To even out the rest of its armaments were 2 ion cannons and a quad laser cannon turret, providing protection against enemy fighters.

<o:p></o:p>

Commander John Durling and an expanded Nova Squadron had been brought in to do the tests on the first squadron of Sabre Assault Bombers. Because of the increased crew compliments new members had been trained up to the levels of Nova Squadron and added to the squadron, so that they could be used to test out the newest of the new in Galactic Coalition Bombers.

<o:p></o:p>

When Commander Durling has first looked over the new bombers they had impressed him immediately. While energy demands meant that they had weak shields, they had good armour and pulse shields, plus more speed than one would expect from a ship of that size. That, combined with the punch the bomber was capable of delivering meant that he was very impressed with the bomber.

<o:p></o:p>

He eased the ship out of the dry dock that it was situated in and waited for the rest of the squadron to likewise come up behind him and form up. Then he kicked in the thrusters and felt himself being pushed against his seat, even with the internal compensator on. He immediately swung the ship to starboard and then pulled back in a tight loop, followed by a cut to port and a barrel roll. While not as manoeuvrable as a Kriss fighter or the SAB/SSFs that his squadron had been forced to fly recently, it still had decent manoeuvrability. Glancing at his sensor board he smiled when he noticed that his squadron was still with him.

<o:p></o:p>

“All right squadron, arm primary launchers with ACMs and secondary ones with SMs. Also prep drop chutes.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.” Came the chorused reply.

<o:p></o:p>

He flew up to the first target, a 2 kilometre long asteroid. Once it came into range his co-pilot launched a pair of ACMs (Advanced Concussion Missiles) at the asteroid. Around him the rest of the squadron similarly launched their missiles and then followed his lead by flying about the growing explosion to cross over the asteroid. As looked at the feed coming in from a probe standing nearby he noticed that a massive section of the asteroid was missing and many pieces had broken off behind his bombers. Then his bombardier launched a pair of SMs (Sonic Missiles) at the asteroid, soon joined by 22 other SMs. This created a massive shockwave, causing even more destruction. Dodging the shockwave Commander Durling brought his bomber back in line for the last part of the asteroid. Here his bombardier released a massive salvo of Class A thermal detonators, 20 in total, the maximum amount possible in one run. Then John was past the asteroid and the rest of his squadron was pulling out of their bombing runs and following him.

<o:p></o:p>

They then flew on to the second target, the bow section of an old Victory – class Star Destroyer that had been destroyed in some past battle. The Galactic Coalition had towed it here, repaired the bow to give it better armour, and now used it to test out new weapons and craft. However, before they could get there they had to pass through a series of training droids, designed to simulate flying through a screen of enemy fighters. As they entered the field they began to take many hits. However immediately Commander Durling turned on the Pulse Shielding, giving the ship complete protection for a split second, while the ships ion cannons and quad laser cannons began to attack the training droids. Equipped with low level lasers and high-powered shields they wouldn’t be able to be destroyed by the weapons being fired at them, nor could they damage the bombers. The bombers passed through the screen, all signifying that they were intact although many had “lost” their shields.

<o:p></o:p>

Through that obstacle, the bombers moved in on the bow of the Victory Star Destroyer. Surrounding the bow was more training droids, designed to simulate the weapons of the VSD.

<o:p></o:p>

“All ships, load launchers with SHs (“Sleeper” Harpoons).”

<o:p></o:p>

“Copy that.”

<o:p></o:p>

As the bombers approached Durling noticed that his Pulse shields would soon be recharged.

<o:p></o:p>

“Cut speed and then accelerate again once we get within optimum firing range of the VSD.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

Durling cut his speed down by 20% and watched as his Pulse shields recharged some more. Slower than before, but still traveling at great speed, he watched as he game into maximum firing range of the VSD. Its “forward cannons” came to bear on him, firing shots that were easy to dodge at such a distance. However, as he came closer, the shots began to get closer and closer. Finally he reached their optimum firing range and slammed down on the accelerator, dodging the set of shots that were aimed at him and his squadron and causing the guns to have to react to his sudden increase in acceleration. As they began to get the hang of his new speed, and he closed to point-blank range, his co-pilot fired off his first to missiles before beginning to pull up, allowing the next two missiles to fire off. Once he had registered that the missiles were away he pulled his craft through an impressive array of evasive techniques, and triggered the pulse shields at exactly the right moment to avoid what would have been a devastating salvo. Meanwhile his co-pilot and gunner had been firing the ion cannons and quad laser cannon at the training droids. As he got out of the range of the guns, he turned to head back for CN-1344. Once there he put the SAB through a series of atmospheric manoeuvres, noticing the decrease in manoeuvrability in the atmosphere before docking again. There he learned that the “Sleeper” Harpoons had performed as expected and would have knocked out anyone in the bow of the VSD, allowing GC troops to be able to board easier. As well, numerous of the weapons emplacements on the bow of the VSD would have been taken out in his attack, either through laser and ion cannon fire or through the “Sleeper” Harpoons. The test mission was complete and the Sabre Assault Bomber had performed admirably.

Colonel Kristen Bartle waved to Commander Durling as they passed each other in the docking bay.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

“How did the tests go on the SAB?”

<o:p></o:p>

“Perfect. It’s all that I expected it to be plus more. We didn’t have time to get to the hyperdrive test but we’ll be doing that later today.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Today sure is a big day for tests, isn’t it?”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yeah, after the Swift – class Space Superiority Fighter we still have two more big tests scheduled for today, don’t we?”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yeah, they want bombers and fighters involved in both of them as well. Any idea what it is about?”

<o:p></o:p>

“Not a clue, but I’m assuming they have some new kind of capital ship they want tested out. So you’re going out to do the SSSF test now?”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yeah, they want us to get it done as quick as possible so that then they can move onto the next tests.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Isn’t that the way it always it. Those guys over at High Command are always more worried about the capital ships that the fighters. I swear, if they could they would skip having fighters entirely and just spend more and more money on capital ships.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yeah, fortunately Minister Dondana doesn’t think that way.”

<o:p></o:p>

“You’re telling me. Anyway, I should I get going, give High Command my report, as if they will actually pay attention and look over it later…”

<o:p></o:p>

With that the two part ways, Colonel Bartle continuing on to the new fighters. When she arrived at it she paused and just stared at it. The freshly painted hull gleamed in the well lit docking bay, accenting its gentle curves. She climbed up into the cockpit, waved at the crew chief and then began going through the start up checklist. Weapons, shields, engines, they all looked good.

<o:p></o:p>

“This is Golden Eagle One, 2 lit and ready to go.”

<o:p></o:p>

Over the next few moments the other Golden Eagles responded.

<o:p></o:p>

Well the comm units seem to be working well enough. Lets just hope that things stay this way.

<o:p></o:p>

“All Golden Eagles, launch.”

<o:p></o:p>

With that Colonel Bartle rose on her repulsorlifts and moved forward out of the docking bay. Once she had cleared the docking bay she hit the thrusters and was thrown backwards by the force applied by the engines. She soon found that she was moving at a much higher speed than the original SAB/SSF had ever reached. The controls were similar to those of the original SAB/SSF so here squadron had required only a small amount of time in the simulators to master the basics of the SSSF.

“Colonel Bartle, this is CN-1344 Command. We detect that you have a group of fighters coming in at 2 o’clock. Destroy them immediately.”
<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir. Squadron, turn to 2 o’clock.”

<o:p></o:p>

The squadron made the turn and she was surprised by what she saw. In front of her was a very impressive array of fighters. 3 squadrons of a variety of craft faced her. Coming in at the front were what looked like a squadron of E-78 Swarm Fighters. Following them was a squadron of what looked like TIE Defenders that were escorting B-Wings. She knew that these were nothing more than old equipment being piloted by droids with underpowered lasers. In turn her sensors were made to send off a bell if they detected too many hits.

<o:p></o:p>

“Fire MCMs at the first wave of fighters, then use ACMs on the next flight. Take out the B-wings with lasers and ion cannons. Once we blow past the B-wings Flight One breaks up, Flight Two breaks starboard and Flight Three breaks port. Fly out of their weapons’ ranges and then turn around and pick up whatever ships remain.”

<o:p></o:p>

The SSSFs came roaring down on the first wave of enemy fighters, firing their MINI Concussion Missiles at the squadron, still in formation, then blew past the E-78s and rather than stopping to destroy the last of this squadron moved on towards the TIE Defenders, releasing a wave of Advanced Concussion Missiles at the TIE Defenders once they came quite close to them. This tactic surprised the TIE Defenders as the ACMs were quicker than expected, plus because of the close range that they had been fired the enemy didn’t really have a chance to dodge them. Kristen activated her Pulse Shielding as she flew through the explosions, which proved a good idea because she did hit some debris and while in them a proton torpedo fired by one of the B-wings impacted on her shields. Apparently the B-wings had detected what was happening and had launched a salvo of missiles to try and get the SSSFs while they were flying blind through the explosions, unfortunately for them Kristen and the rest of her squadron was just too smart. They quickly fired on the B-wings with their lasers and ion cannons, before flying past the fighters.

<o:p></o:p>

“All craft break.”

<o:p></o:p>

The Golden Eagles broke into their three flights and spread apart. As they blasted away from the enemy fighters at a speed far exceeding anything the enemy fighters could even hope of reaching. As they accelerated away Kristen had time to check out her sensors. Behind her she noticed that the E-78 squadron been wiped out completely, the MINI Concussion Missiles proving their worth, the shrapnel having spread out and destroyed the squadron. The TIE Defenders had faired better, with 2 members of their squadron remaining and the B-wings had fair best of all, but still not all that well. Two were completely undamaged, two had moderate damage and one was partially disabled. Other than that they had all been destroyed or disabled.

<o:p></o:p>

“Golden Eagles, on my mark break and return to destroy the remaining fighters. Three, Two, One, Mark.”

<o:p></o:p>

The squadron turned around and came back at the remaining fighters. Three Flight flew in first from port, flying through the remaining fighters and taking out the partially disabled B-wing and two damaged B-wings. As the other fighters turned to attack Three Flight, Two Flight came in from starboard, flying in from just below Three Flight and blowing through the cloud of fighters, destroying the two remaining B-wings. Then One Flight came down on the fighters from above, destroying the two remaining TIE Defenders and effectively ending the battle.

<o:p></o:p>

“Excellent job Golden Eagles. We are detecting a squadron of TIE Interceptors in the atmosphere of CN-1344. Descend and destroy at once.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

The Golden Eagles turned around and blasted towards the planet. Once they arrived they blasted down towards the enemy squadron of interceptors. Due to the friction presented by the air they had reduced speed, but because of how their fighters were shaped, the air just flew right under and over them, actually giving them some lift. Furthermore gravity allowed them to dive down on the enemy fighters. Once there they found that the TIE Interceptors were flying through a storm with extremely strong crosswinds.

“All fighters, target to the left of the enemy fighters, the crosswinds will affect them more than us because of our narrowed wing tips and therefore it will push them across in front of us.”

With those instructions in mind the Golden Eagles wiped out the enemy squadron and returned to the docking bay. The mission had been a success and now the SSSF would soon seen action in a non-controlled situation…

Captain Goldsting looked out the viewport of the ship that lay before him. His newest command was a Heroic – class Support Vessel, the first one of its class produced at CN-1344. The name of the vessel was Can’d’any, after the most militaristic of the nations on Farquak. High Command had decreed that the first of the Heroic – class Support Vessels would be named after the nations on Farquak, as a show of appreciation for all that the Cren had done for the Galactic Coalition over the years, most recently with their large input in new designs put forth by Galactic Coalition Research and Development.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Captain Goldsting had been a Longsword Frigate commander prior to being transferred to the Heroic – class Support Vessel project. As much as he liked commanding his Longsword Frigate, he was pleased to have been transferred to command an HSV. High Command had selected some of the best Longsword Frigate commanders and crewmembers to serve onboard the HSVs as they were of similar length and both ships relied heavily on speed. As well, the pilot for the HSV needed to be used to flying extremely fast and manoeuvrable ships as the HSV has plenty of speed and manoeuvrability and would need to go into an engagement zone, retrieve a stricken ship and pull it to safety. With that thought in mind Captain Goldsting turned to his helm officer.

<o:p></o:p>

“Ensign Flier, take us out.”

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

Can’d’any manoeuvred out of the dockyard on its repulsors. Once it had exited the dockyard Captain Goldsting waved at Ensign Flier and the ensign cut in the main engines, the acceleration enough that it would have caught a normal crew off guard. However none of the crewmembers even seemed to notice the acceleration, so used to being onboard Longsword Frigates. Can’d’any quickly came up to speed and Ensign Flier put in the correct co-ordinates. The ship made the run up to hyperspace, and disappeared from the space surrounding CN-1344. One moment it had been in the dockyard, the next it was far enough away from the planet to make a jump to hyperspace. Truly the HSV was a remarkable ship.

<o:p></o:p>

Can’d’any reverted from hyperspace in a flash of light. Directly ahead of them was what looked like the remains of a starfighter battle. The comm crackled for a second before the voice for CN-1344 Control came over loud and clear.

<o:p></o:p>

“Can’d’any you have be delegated to retrieve any and all disabled or damaged fighters. Do your best to cure the wounded. Intelligence reports that the enemy has since moved out of the area.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.” Replied Captain Goldsting. Then the Aqualish turned to his bridge crew before continuing, “Launch both shuttles and have them begin flying through the battle, using life sensors to detect which ships have good life signatures, which have hurt ones and which have none.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

The shuttles flew out into the fighters and quickly established that there were 12 disabled vessels and 5 damaged ones. The personnel in 3 of the disabled ones and 2 of the damaged ones were detected to be unhurt and alive. The remaining pilots were injured in some way, although sensors indicated that none had mortal or even highly serious wounds.

<o:p></o:p>

“Use the Tractor Beams to bring in the fighters with injured pilots, starting with the disabled and most heavily damaged fighters first.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

The 10 RC – 55 Tractor Beams activated and right away there was a visible affect. The 10 targeted fighters sped towards Can’d’any. Meanwhile, the two damaged fighters slowly began moving under their own power towards the HSV. Once the first two fighters had been safely landed the two damaged fighters sped up on their acceleration towards the HSV, each added by a RC – 55 Tractor Beam. Medics swarmed around each of the fighters, organising the wounded and speeding them off to the onboard medical facility, the more injured ones first. There they were each properly treated.

<o:p></o:p>

As for the fighters with unhurt pilots, the RC-55 Tractor Beams latched onto them and the ship prepared to return to CN-1344. However suddenly a shout was heard from the sensor officer, a Firrerro.

<o:p></o:p>

“Sir, we have incoming enemies. 3 Strike Cruisers, launching early TIE Fighters.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Activate all shields. The Support – class Shield Generators should centre the protection around us and the fighters being towed. Notify CN-1344 of the enemies.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Keep out of weapons range of the enemy, but do not jump to hyperspace, we need to know what CN-1344 wants us to do.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

The enemy Strike Cruisers managed to get a salvo off at the HSV prior to the HSV speeding away from them at a speed that the ships could not match. However, thanks to the massive redundancy in shield systems, the HSV suffered no damage and the shield levels didn’t even lower that much.

<o:p></o:p>

Meanwhile at CN-1344 Commander Sarled had reached the bridge of the Dominator…

<o:p></o:p>

Commander Sarlerd smiled as he looked out over the bow of the vessel he was currently in command of. This was, the Dominator, the newest of the new. And it was new on so many different levels. It was the first ship of a new class, the Dominator – class Heavy Battle Cruiser. It was one of the new vessels being put forth by the Galactic Coalition Research and Development Departments, in conjunction with a variety of companies. Because multiple companies designed it, it had a wide variety of species and cultures from across the Coalition influencing it. Cren Sensors and Munitions was based on Farquak but had major holdings on both Gernon and Farquak Junior and had begun expanding into Sapuni, and was made up primarily of Cren. Aqualish Shielding System had both types of Aqualish involved in its company. Second Wave was a small company with its employees being from all over. Emanon Computing represented Emanon (in more than one way), Anoat Engines represented Anoat and was made up primarily of humans. In short, the Dominator had its roots in alien and human cultures from across the Coalition.

<o:p></o:p>

“Sir, we have an incoming message from CN-1344 Control.”

<o:p></o:p>

“What is it Lieutenant Gatterqor?”

“Its seems that the Can’d’any, one of the new Heroic – class Support Vessels, the one on training right now, has been attacked by 3 Strike Cruisers. We have been delegated to go help them out. The HSVs Dern’lya, Shri’wentok, Gen’lem and Wedor’t are currently getting ready to pull us out of this dry dock and have then been assigned to escort us. We have our 2 squadrons of Sabre Assault Bombers and 2 squadrons of Swift – class Space Superiority Fighters onboard, as well as 5 Sentinel Assault Shuttles.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Any other support, not that we really need it?”

<o:p></o:p>

“The 6 other HSVs have been assigned to follow us out.”

<o:p></o:p>

“All right, lets see what this ship can do.”

<o:p></o:p>

Once the Dominator was pulled out of the dry dock, it, along with the HSVs still attached to it, accelerated to hyperspace. It soon reverted to real space, behind the 2 enemy Strike Cruisers, but not within firing range.

<o:p></o:p>

“Launch all fighters. Have the four HSVs release us, and then have T’tegor’f, H’ppar’mba, K’ng’ral and P’nor’tif attach onto us and pull us forward. Have Qu’anallier and Ravit’ld standing by to retrieve any escape pods and fighters. Load all missiles launchers with SMs, power up all weapons. Lets go get us some Strike Cruisers. Have the SAB’s lead the assault, firing with everything you have on the port Strike Cruiser. The SSSFs are to follow them in and if possible also fire off one ACM each on the port Strike Cruiser. Once the first run is done the SSSFs will destroy the enemy TIE Fighters, while the SAB’s break into squadrons, one going to port, one going up. Once out of firing range they will turn around and attack which ever target presents itself.”

<o:p></o:p>

“Yes sir.”

<o:p></o:p>

The Dominator – class Heavy Battle Cruiser, which would normally be unable to catch up to the Strike Cruisers, but in this case added by HSVs, accelerated forward at an amazing rate. The fighters reached the Strike Cruisers fire, and launched a volley of Advanced Concussion Missiles at the enemy, causing severe shield damage. Then they flew over the Strike Cruiser, launching another salvo of missiles and bombing the Strike Cruiser with their thermal detonators, wiping out the shields and opening up gapping holes in the top of the Strike Cruiser. Then a massive explosion appeared from the rear of the craft (which was facing the Dominator) and when the explosion diminished the sensors no longer registered the Strike Cruiser as a threat, seeing as it had broke into multiple pieces. . Once within firing range Commander Sarlerd once again began issuing orders.

<o:p></o:p>

“All missile launchers, target the starboard Strike Cruiser, aim at the engines. Turbolasers and Ion Cannons, centralize fire to the dead centre of each of the engines of the centre Strike Cruiser. Laser Cannons, watch out for the enemy fighters, they seem to have ignored our fighters and are moving against us.”

<o:p></o:p>

The Sonic Missiles flew out, striking the enemy Strike Cruiser’s aft particle shields, right in the centre. The missiles exploded, sending their energy, unaffected, through the particle and ray shields, and straight at the engines, destroying them. The massive amount of turbolaser cannon fire aimed at the centre Strike Cruiser’s engines quickly overwhelmed the shields, the Emanon Computing Advanced Targeting Computer quickly proving its worth as the weapons ripped apart the shields and then started their work on the engines. The Ion Cannons’ energy had already traveled through the shields and had partially disabled the engines, as well as other technologies on the aft of the ship, such as sensors and weapons.

<o:p></o:p>

“Both enemy ships’s engines have been destroyed.”

“HSV’s, un-attach from us, you have done your job. Plot our course directly between the two Strike Cruisers and destroy them on the way by. Once we are past them I want us to simply have to plot a course to CN-1344 and then we are done. Understand?”

“Yes sir.”

As the Dominator split between the two Strike Cruisers, the guns changed their targets, port guns firing on the ‘centre’ Strike Cruiser and starboard ones firing on the starboard one. Wave after wave of fire flew into the Strike Cruisers, causing holes to appear in the shields, before eventually they dropped completely. The ion cannons had been sending waves of blue electricity forking over the hulls of the Strike Cruisers, disabling weapons, sensors and other equipment that it met on the way over the hull. As the shields dropped completely Commander Sarlerd felt it was necessary to issue one last command.

“Concentrate firepower on the seems where the Strike Cruisers’ modules are attached together, they will be the weak points.”

<o:p></o:p>

The Dominator used is Emanon Computer Advanced Targeting Computers to link the guns together, providing extremely accurate, high-powered strikes against a few small spots on the Strike Cruisers’ hulls. When a hole was pierced in the armour a portion of the guns continued their strikes on that spot, blowing through internal bulkheads and compartments, while the other guns took advantage of the weakened hull in the surrounding area and began expanding out on the hole, expanding the size. Numerous small explosions were seen inside the ships before larger ones ripped them both apart. A few escape pods were launched in that time, but were quickly nabbed by the HSVs. During the battle the anti-fighter quad laser cannons had destroyed the enemy fighters with ease. The Dominator – class Heavy Battle Cruiser had proved its worth and now the entire fleet headed back to CN-1344.

<o:p></o:p>

Upon reversion back to hyperspace the Dominator and most of the HSVs began to orbit the world, while the fighters landed in the hangar bay of one of the orbiting stations. Can’d’any, finishing up its mission, delivered the injured pilots to the hospital on the planet, while testing its greatly reduced atmospheric speed. At the same time it towed down the escape pods captured at the battle to be delivered to the prison complex.

<o:p></o:p>

“Our new designs have proved satisfactory. The ships destroyed were all old decommissioned ships planned for destruction anyway, and the injured pilots were in fact just droids imitating humans with injuries. Furthermore the ships destroyed were all piloted by droids. No lives were lost or citizens injured in the demonstrations.”

<o:p></o:p>

A fleet consisting of many of the new SSSFs and SABs, as well as all of the new HSVs and Dominator – class Heavy Battle Cruisers left CN-1344 for transit to other systems of the Coalition, to see use there, while shipyards across the Coalition produced more of these new ships.
