Part I: Storm Clouds

There was never a good war… or a bad peace

It is a time of peace and tranquility for the Galactic Defence Initiative. GDI soldiers, battle weary and tired of war, have laid down their arms and taken up a life of peace.

But all is not well. While peace reigns supreme on New Alderaan, Karnak Alpha, and Ord Mantell, the galaxy is at war. The Yuuzhan Vong push relentlessly into the galaxy, their attempts to destroy the Caprician people near successful, and Vinda Corporation has launched a mighty offensive against the Corporate Sector Authority. At the same time, Uprising Enemies appear and make their own claim for the Corporate Sector, and New Republic forces have been spotted grabbing planets in the system as well.

But there is more to the story than that. Hidden away in the Unknown Regions, a new threat waits for its chance to strike out. The galaxy is once more tilting towards darkness, and only one man has the ability to halt this invasion…

Storm clouds over the government complex on New Alderaan, where the Galactic Defence Initiative senate sits. They are dark and threatening, foreshadowing the events to come. They give a slight hint of what will soon take place…

The Chiss Empire, a major Empire in the Unknown Regions. Spanning fourteen worlds, it remains a stronghold of the galaxy. It is said that the Chiss Empire has the means to tip the balance of power in the galaxy either way… if they were to ally themselves with someone. It is a great task to take that threat away, but one has dared try…

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

Emperor Pincz gazes across the skyscape from the tallest tower of the Imperial government tower. His face, normally jubilant, is dominated by a frown. Dark times are coming, and Emperor Pincz knew for certain that he and the empire he had worked for so long to build would be caught up in it.

He sighed and beckoned for his servant – a human man of about 30 with a thick stomach and prematurely grey hair.

“Milord?” he says tentatively , sensing his master’s bad mood. The Emperor turned slowly and gazed at the man for a moment. His red eyes bore into the man, who turned away in fear. When the Emperor spoke, his voice was cold and smooth, like a snake.

“Do you see it?” He asked, turning his gaze back to the windows. “Can you sense it?” The servant knew what his master was speaking of, but he dared not mention it. He could tell when the Emperor was in a bad mood, and this was one of those times.
“They’re coming. They want to ruin me. They want to destroy what we have worked so hard for. They want to take our worlds and destroy our Empire.” He sighed again, and he sagged visibly.
“We will not let them, milord.” The servant said dutifully. “We’ll fight them. Fight them and make them wish they’d never set foot in our space. They will not defeat us.”

The Emperor turned.
“Pierre, my friend. I know you speak truth. But I am an old man, and I do not think I have it in me to partake in another war. I will do all I can, but…” He left the statement unfinished, hanging in the air. Pierre shook his head.
“Milord, you are the best ruler we’ve ever had. You cannot give up… if you do, the people will give up and we will falter. You know as well as anyone that we cannot afford to show weakness. Especially now.” The Emperor was staring out the window again. He laughed sharply.

“Do you know what my agents told me today, Peirre?” He asked, not expecting the man to answer. He didn’t. “They told me that the galaxy is at war! That the Corporate Sector Authority has fallen! Can you believe it, Pierre! What’s more, it was a bloody business man! A man, whose fleet contains less than fifty ships destroyed the Corporate Sector Authority! It’s insane!” Pierre had remained silent during this rant, but now he spoke up.

“Sir, I very much doubt that a man with fifty ships could destroy our position here. We are stronger and smarter than the Corporate Sector Authority, and we have more resources at our disposal.” The Emperor turned away from the viewport, which had been replaced by blackness as the sun had set, and walked over to his desk. Raising the bottle of imported Corellian Fire Whisky, he poured a glass and gulped it down.

“Darkness is coming, and I fear that it will overwhelm us all.” He sighed deeply. “Lock down the borders. Put the fleets on alert. I don’t want a war, but I’ll be damned if I’m not going to give them one if they try to take this from me!”

Elysia Sector – Unknown Regions

A single Star Destroyer glided peacefully through the darkness of space in the Unknown Regions. The ship, a part of the Galactic Defence Initiative Third Fleet, had only one purpose. She was a spy, sent to discover the goings on of the Chiss Empire.

A single A-wing starfighter launched from the ship’s cavernous main hanger bay and arced out in front of the great warship before vanishing into hyperspace. The mammoth Star Destroyer continued on her solitary mission.

New Alderaan – Government Complex

“Can it be done?” Supreme Commander Isstal turned from the cabinet and looked at Colonel Ross.
“It is a great challenge, Colonel. But it can be done. It can be done.” The man nodded, as if that was good enough for him.
“What of the critics? Surely not everyone approves of this course of action?” Isstal shook his head.
“Naturally, no. But the Chiss Empire presents a threat to all of us, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let that threat go unchecked.” Ross nodded.
“But you’ll be scrutinized by the peace-lovers, sir. For everything you do while in the Unknown Regions.” Isstal laughed.
“Colonel, this operation is very hush-hush. The senate knows, and by the time its over most of the galaxy will know that we control Elysia. But that doesn’t bother me, because the positives far outweigh the negatives.” He smiled and found what he looking for and rose.
“Now, Colonel, let us drink to it!” He popped the cork on the bottle of old Alderaani wine he had been searching for and poured to glasses.

GDI Third Fleet - Elysia Sector – Unknown Regions

“Captain, sir! We have an unidentified contact baring Zero-Zero-Nine and closing fast!” Commodore Joda, of the Star Destroyer Black Rose spun in his command chair. He was referred to as Captain because, while he commanded the entire fleet here, he was in direct command of Black Rose, and as such being addressed as ‘Captain’ was appropriate.
“Can you get a sensor lock on it?” A moment paused. “Confirmed: Lambda-class Shuttle Hard Hitter.” Joda smiled in relief.
“Hail them, lieutenant, and prepare the ship for the Supreme Commander’s arrival.” The officer looked startled, but saluted and got to it.

Supreme Commander Isstal’s shuttle set down on the flight deck of the Black Rose with a thump and the hissing sound of escaping steam. The ramp hit the metal flooring, and Isstal walked down. He smiled.
“Commodore Joda, I trust everything is in order?” he asked.
“Yes, sir. The Third is at Combat Four and awaiting your arrival to assume direct command.” Isstal nodded; this answer pleased him.
“You have all the probes and prowlers required for this mission, Commodore?” The man nodded.
“I do, sir. Though we could always due with more. He gestured to a doorway, which after accepting his command code hissed open. The two entered a dimly lit room. Holographic maps and displays covered nearly every surface, giving a very detailed representation of the Chiss Empire’s space. The Commodore continued his briefing, now speaking to the assembled officers who had been awaiting their arrival.
“The Chiss Empire controls fourteen worlds,” the screend behind him changed to show the various worlds under the control of the Chiss. “To successfully probe each we will likely need several more squadrons of Prowlers and drones, though at this time I can’t make an solid statements. Currently, Solitude is on assignment with our compliment of A-wing scouts and has made successful runs on Elysia, Freyr, and Amaethon. They have revealed formidable defences, both naval and land-based.”
“This is why we must stop them. Before they can emerge and wreck havoc across the galaxy.” The Supreme Commander interrupted. Joda nodded.
“Exactly. The Chiss Empire has the resources to swing the balance of power either way; it’s our job to deprive them of that advantage. We do so by striking here and here.” He highlighted to points on the holodisplay behind him. “We will first remove the Chiss ability to make new war machines.”

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

And then the morning comes…

It was a glorious morning on the Chiss capitol of Elysia when the turbolaser fire began to rain down from the sky. Deadly bolts of energy tore into the cities, tearing apart homes and turning solid rock into molten slag. Alarm klaxons began to blare across the world, alerting the residences of the impending danger. But that only made them targets. As they ran from their homes they were struck down by TIE fighters tearing across the sky…

Emperor Pincz woke with a start. Dark times were indeed approaching…

“Milord!” The Emperor, ignoring his usual routine, rose and wandered from his quarters within the vast government complex. He smiled as he noticed Pierre.
“Have you received any reports?” he asked. “Anything from the fleets?” Pierre shook his head.
“Nothing, sir. And your agents reported in early. Other than what you have mentioned there has been no change. So far as we can tell, we are not a risk.”
“Not yet,” The Emperor said bitterly, pouring himself a cup of caf from the machine.
“Don’t worry, sir. If anyone is foolish enough to attack us here then we will destroy them, and then hunt down any survivors.” The servant smiled. “We will not allow ourselves to be ruled by some outsider, Milord. We will stop them.” The Emperor knew that his servant meant to cheer him, but his attempt had failed. He couldn’t shake the feeling that this impending danger would consume them all.
“Tell me, Pierre, are you afraid?” He asked, resting his elbows on the countertop and gazing into nothingness.
“Afraid?” The servant repeated, unsure of what his lord meant.
“Afraid of the future? Of the possibility that you and I will die. That out Empire may fail?” Pierre was taken aback by the question.
“I do not fear, Milord, for I have confidence in our ability to defeat anyone who dares try to oppose us.” Pincz laughed shortly and spoke softly, his attention only half directed at his servant.
“Grand Moff Tarkin was not afraid, Pierre, when the Rebels attack his ‘invincible’ Death Star, and now he is dead. Emperor Palpatine did not fear the Rebels, and now he is dead. I think you overestimate us.” Pierre’s smile vanished.
“Milord, we are not so stupid as Tarkin, and we are not overconfident as Palpatine was. I know the risks, but I am confident nonetheless.” The Emperor sighed.
“I believe you are overconfident, Pierre.”

GDI Third Fleet - Elysia Sector – Unknown Regions

A leader’s greatest weakness is overconfidence. His greatest asset is faith; faith in his troops and in his self.

Supreme Commander Isstal stared into space from the observation deck of his great Star Destroyer. He was worried, not only of what was to come but also of the threats that he faced from the people at home.

His actions were justified, he thought, but would the people agree with him? The Ruling Council had authorized this action, supported and encouraged it, in fact, but they were hardly a percentage of the entire population of GDI.

A single set of footsteps sounded behind the Supreme Commander. He did not turn, instead keeping his eyes fixed on a single star visible through the large window.

“What do you think, Colonel?” He asked, not moving his eyes from the star.
“Sir?” Colonel Ross’ voice was mystified. Still the Supreme Commander did not move.
“What do you think, Colonel, of all of this? Of our objective here? Of our chances?” He raised a glass to his lips and sipped the delicate blend. Colonel Ross was silent for a moment.
“I believe it is possible, sir, to win. It will take some fighting, but it can be won.” Isstal shook his head.
“No no, Colonel. Why are we here? Why are we launching a campaign against the Chiss Empire?” He asked these questions that he knew the answers to to find out what his men thought. The Colonel, unbeknownst to Isstal, shrugged.
“Because the Council said so,” he said simply. The Supreme Commander laughed.
“‘Because the Council said so’ he mocked. Is that truly a good enough answer for you, Colonel?” He said scornfully. He had been drinking, and he was in a rare mood. Ross stayed silent.
“Well, Colonel? Why are here?” The other man came to stand alongside his commander.
“Because the Chiss possess an advantage that could destroy us all. Because they hold to much power. Because it is a dictatorship and goes against everything the Galactic Defence Initiative stands for.” He said.
“Is it a dictatorship, Colonel? Are they really so different from us?” He wondered aloud.
“The title ‘Emperor’ usually suggests a dictatorship, sir.”
“But this Emperor Pincz. Is he evil? Is he a dictator, power hungry? Is he another Palpatine?” The Supreme Commander asked, still staring at his star.
“We don’t know sir, but we can’t take that chance. They could strike at any moment. And if they do, the results would be disastrous.” Isstal sighed.
“And if they don’t strike, Colonel? If they had never planned to? Then we are making a mistake. A deadly mistake.” The Colonel shrugged.
“It’s possible, sir. But it’s also possible that they plan to destroy all who try to stand in their way. It’s weighing the odds, sir, and those odds point towards a hostile movement.” Isstal nodded, evidently satisfied with this answer.
“I just hope, Colonel, that we are doing the right thing.”

Elysia Sector – Unknown Regions

Rev Dalin knew something was wrong when his ship lurched suddenly into realspace, the hum of the engines being replaced by blaring alarm klaxons. The ship and its escorts had been brutally pulled from hyperspace by the Immobilizer 418 Heavy Cruiser, which was now visible outside the bridge viewports. Already the ship’s escort of a single light corvette and a half dozen antiqued Z-95 Headhunters were under attack. Not from the Interdictor, but from the much more impressive and frightening Imperial-class Star Destroyer that had appeared from, evidently, behind them. The escorts were gone before they knew what was happening.
“Holy Mother of Crap!” Rev swore, looking at the massive Star Destroyer now bearing down on them. “Helm! About turn, get us clear of the-” He was cut off as he was thrown to the metallic floor as the Star Destroyer opened fire. They heavy transport may have been 1400 meters long, but it was old, underarmed, and even in its prime would not have hoped to match an Imperial Star Destroyer. Its key asset was its speed, which Rev Dalin had hoped to use to his advantage. But as the damage reports came in and showed that engines three and five were dead and another three damaged, he knew they were done for. He swore, then looked out at the Star Destroyer.
“Transmit our surrender,” he said glumly. “Tell them we are lowering our shields.”

The soldiers who boarded the transport wore stormtrooper armor, but they were obviously not stormies. Their armor was painted a stunning scarlet, with silver patches adorning some.

They entered the bridge and wasted no time. Before Rev Dalin could speak he was struck down by a stun bolt. His unconscious when he hit the floor for the second time in fifteen minutes.

The soldiers quickly secured the transport’s cargo and transferred it to the Star Destroyer, then destroyed the ship with a series of explosives. The Star Destroyers made the jump to hyperspace. Left behind, a GDI Probe transmitted the scene it had just recorded back to the fleet, then jumped to hyperspace.

New Alderaan – Government Complex

“This is outrageous! The fleet should never have been rebuilt! You claim that it was done to keep the peace, and now you send it into a territory that has never shown us any hostility. And for what? To start a war?” The man who was speaking, David Barril, was standing in the middle of the senate floor. Several of the members roared in agreement with the man, but it was far outweighed by the criticisms.
“You know damn well why the fleet was sent to the Elysia Sector! We’re trying to prevent a war, not start one!”
“Then why did you build the fleet? Building a fleet will only result in one thing: war! By constructing these weapons of war you have doomed us all!” David shouted. The Chairman spat in disgust.
“Senator, you are excused. Come back when you are ready to discuss things reasonably.”
Suddenly a figure appeared on the screen, quickly replaced by a video. Supreme Commander Isstal spoke over the stilled image.
“This was taken just moments ago by one of our probes in the Elysia Sector.” The video played, revealing the attack and destruction of the ship. The image went back to Isstal. “This is clearly an unprovoked assault. Terrorism, and it will not stand. We have seen nothing of this nature since Palpatine, and it will not stand.” The image vanished. The senate was silent for a moment as they took in what they had seen. Dark times indeed.

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

A trio of escort shuttles set down in perfect formation around the larger passenger shuttle. This passenger shuttle, however, was not carrying passengers. A group of guards appeared first, blaster rifles glinting ominously in the early morning sun. They were followed by a small group of prisoners, their hands and feet shackled. Another group of guards followed them, and they were led into a transport and taken away.

From the window of his office, Emperor Pincz watched the prisoners with disdain. Spies were to be punished, and there was little doubt that these ones were spies. Soon he would know. Soon.

“Milord?” It was Pierre, entering the chamber from behind him and bowing low. “Milord, a report from the front. A Star Destroyer was spotted, alone, within our space. We cannot determine what she was doing, but it is suspected that she was attempting to infiltrate our borders.” The Emperor nodded.
“And?”
“Well, they must be stopped… mustn’t they?” Pincz sighed and looked down to the landing pad, where another ship was setting down.
“I suppose so, Pierre.” He said, not really caring either way. “Do what you think is best. I have no doubt that you will make the right choice.” Pierre nodded.
“As you wish, Milord.” He backed out of the room, leaving the Emperor alone with his thoughts once more.

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

Kalenda sighed. This was not going well. No, in fact, it was not going at all. She was trapped in one of the Emperor’s prisons, declared a spy by an organization that had brutally attacked her ship with no mercy and stole their cargo. No, this certainly did not look good.

Getting up, the woman walked to the door and peered through the narrow slit that served as a shutter. There were no guards in sight, though there was a heavy metal door and a guard droid on the other side. The other way seemed to simply end in a metal bulkhead. Kalenda shook her head and reached into her tool belt… only to remember the @#%$ guards had taken it. She swore softly, then passed her two hands through here hair. When they emerged, she was holding a small, three-shot blaster and a packet of small, high yield explosives. Kalenda place one above the door frame and retreated to the back of the cell.

“Duck.” She said simply, before pressing the detonator. The explosion was loud, obviously loud enough to be heard down the corridor, but that hardly mattered. Kalenda was out the door, sliding another of the explosives towards the guard terminal, where the droid was attempting to open it to find the source of the explosion. By the time his threat analysis programming determined it was a bomb, it was to late. The second bomb, if possible, was louder than the first. It tore the guard station to shreds and destroyed the droid in and instant.

And the alarms began to go off. The lights cut out, only to be replaced by emergency lighting. Kalenda looked to her companions, who were still in the cell.
“You two coming our what?” She asked, setting off down the hallway. The others paused for a second, then followed.
“Our first stop is the armoury, just ahead of here. Then we can get out of here.” She smiled as she said this, leading them around another bend… and into the path of a dozen heavily armed riot troopers. Kalenda swore and turned back, placing one of her last remaining explosives on the wall and detonating it as the soldiers appeared. The blast set the corridor ablaze, and the three escapees walked through it carefully before running down the hall to find themselves outside the armoury. Kalenda smiled and mounted her final explosive, blasting the heavy door open.

The armoury was filled with useful things. Armour, blaster rifles, flash grenades, comlinks. Kalenda smiled broadly and grabbed a comlink, placing it in her pocket. She then proceeded to arm the three of them as best she could.

When they the left the armoury, they appeared as normal prison soldiers, albeit a bit clumsier than usual. They made their way towards the front lobby, but they never made it. A squadron of the prison troops, seeing what the escapees had done, tracked down the missing armour and now had the trio cornered. Kalenda swore and returned the fire with her heavy blaster rifle, but it was obvious that they could not keep this up. Even as the thoughts passed through her head one of her companions took a hit and fell.

“That’s it, we’ve got to get out of here!” Kalenda turned and blasted open
a doorway marked ‘roof’ and ran up, her companion following close behind. They emerged in the bright sunlight of the Elysia sun.

Kalenda looked around for a way to get off the roof, but there was none.
“Look’s like we’re in a bit of a fix,” she said, taking up a position behind a makeshift blockade and aiming at the doorway.
“May as well go out in a blaze of glory, eh?” The troops appeared, firing as soon as they cleared the door. Kalenda and her cohort returned the shots, striking down the enemy soldiers in quick succession.

Then the ship showed up. It was not a large vessel, only ten or fifteen meters, but it was to big for blaster rifles. The two escapees stood and raised their hands, signifying surrender.

The ship shuddered visibly, then an explosion wreaked its rear compartment and sent it spiralling into the street below. A Skipray Blastboat appeared instead, firing at the enemy soldiers who were now trying to retreat back into the prison. The ramp aboard the Blastboat lowered, and Kalenda and her companion scrambled up and into the ship.

“We intercepted that you’d been captured,” on the crewman said, “and thought you could use some help.” Kalenda smiled at the man.
“Right on time to,” she watched from behind the pilot as the ship tore away from the system defence forces and vanished into hyperspace. “Where are we going?”
“Our first stop is the Solitude, she’s on scene sending recons into the sector. But I daresay the Supreme Commander will want a word as well.” Kalenda nodded.

As the ship emerged from hyperspace Kalenda stood again to stand behind the pilot. She gazed out the viewport, then down at the sensor readout.
“I thought you said that your Star Destroyer would be here.” The pilot pointed to a small sensor contact.
“She was. Is that what I think it is, Lee?” The pilot asked, fearing the worst. A pause, before: “Negative, sir. It’s a piece of an old VicStar. Probably took the brunt of Solitude and limped hope with a hole in her hull that I could fly a Y-wing through.” The pilot laughed.
“Solitude must have gone back to the fleet. We’ll meet them there.” The ship disappeared once more into the darkness of hyperspace…

Elysia Sector – Unknown Regions

The small ship set down with a thump on the deck of the GDI flagship. It was early morning according to the time clock the ship followed, but Supreme Commander Isstal was up and waiting for the ship’s arrival. As Kalenda appeared, he approached.
“Lieutenant. Good to see you again.”
“Likewise, Supreme Commander.” Kalenda said, saluting.
“What can you tell me?” The Supreme Commander returned the salute.
“Not much, I’m afraid. We spent most of our time in a Chiss prison, but I can confirm the size of their fleet. They had an ImpStar and an Interdictor to spare to capture our ship. That’s no mean feat, taking a Star Destroyer off the front lines hurts anyone, especially when a cruiser would have done the job.”
“Maybe they want us to know that they have the resources?” Colonel Ross suggested.
“Perhaps. The fact is that they do, and we must be very careful not to allow ourself to be engaged by the full force of their navy at once.” Isstal nodded.
“That’s a given. We should be able to hold off reinforcements for some time, and if not we always have the option to retreat.” Kalenda shook her head.
“Watch out, sir. They always go for engines first. Once you’re dead in space, they can take their time to finish you off.”
“Sounds like a jolly good time.” Ross said, yawning. “So we must make certain to protect our engines? Or not let them get near them?” The Supreme Commander nodded.
“Yes. If the buggers get near our engines we’re done for, so we must make sure to stop them before they get there.”
“Watch out, sir. Some of those pilots are suicidal. They’re completely willing to destroy themselves to achieve their objective.”
“You mean they’ll ram us?” Colonel Ross asked.
“Yes. They’ll ram their fighters into your stern or bridge, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they sacrificed a couple light cruisers to eliminate this threat.” Isstal sighed.
“Then we must be more cunning than our enemies and show them that we mean business.”

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

“They’re coming here.” Emperor Pincz stares out the large window at the clouds above. Storm clouds are gathering around the planet. They threaten rain, but to the Emperor they signify much more. “The @#%$ who blew up the Domination are coming here.” Pierre, not knowing what to say, stayed silent, slinking in the background as his master went on. “They have the gall to attack us, to spy on us, and to invade our homeland. Do you have any doubt, Pierre, that the ship that destroyed the prison was one of theirs?”
“No, Milord.”
The servant answered obediently.
“No, of course not! They broke the spies out of prison! They’re all against us, Pierre. Our time here is coming to an end.” The servant shook his head.
“No, sir! They are coming, but we will fight back. We will destroy them all! We will emerge triumphant and we will route these outsiders!” The Emperor shook his head sadly.
“No, Pierre. Don’t you see? It is to late. We have already lost. It is only a matter of time now, my servant. Before they come here and destroy us all.” He left those words hanging as he turned back to the window. It was raining now, the sheets of rain pouring down across the city. It never rains but it pours. The Emperor imagined those water droplets as turbolaser blasts and shuddered. “We will not survive this.” He sighed.

Freyr System – Elysia Sector – Unknown Regions

The starships of the Galactic Defence Initiative appeared without warning in the Freyr system. They were immediately set upon by the system’s meagre defences, but it was already to late. The Carrack Light Cruisers had already swarmed forward, attacking the system’s prized shipyard with a massive salvo of unending turbolaser fire. The single capital ship that made up the system’s defences, an aging Imperial-class Star Destroyer, was attack from two sides by the smaller Victory Star Destroyers. The ship was struck continuously by missile and turbolaser fire as the GDI ships did their best to knock it out.

Shields began to collapse and flames began to eat away at the buckling bulkheads. Almost as fast as it had begun the ship was dead in space, escape pods shooting in all directions. Then the smaller Star Destroyers turner their guns on the more important target: the enemy shipyard that made the system as valuable as it was.

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

Alarm klaxons began to blare across the surface of Elysia as the fleet arrived in orbit. In the cities and towns Air Raid alarms went off, alerting the citizens to the impending attack. Emperor Pinca stood alone at the top of the government tower, staring up and the sky. Pierre appeared behind him and spoke softly, his voice full of hatred.
“They outnumber us three to one, Milord, and reports claim it’s not their entire fleet. Our forces are at a loss as to what they should do. They need your leadership if you hope to win.” The Emperor shook his head and gestured for the servant to come nearer. Pierre stood beside his master and looked up. Pincz sighed and drew the vibro-blade.
“Forgive me, my friend.” He plunged the blade deep into the man’s stomach, folding him over.
“It is lost, my friend. We are ended.” The Emperor sighed and walked towards his shuttle.

Helios... Night

"Master Binks, are you there?" The Jedi Master approcahed silently and nodded.

"I am here, Kalenda."

The two looked at each other for an instant then began to move forward into the shadows of Helios' underworld.

Part II: Project Reprisal

We make war that we may live in peace

Darkness has engulfed the galaxy. Galactic Defence Initiative forces, striking without warning, have liberated the Chiss Empire’s capital at Elysia. The Emperor himself, however, is not be found. He is suspected to have retreated with his forces as the planet fell.

During the battle, GDI operatives located plans for a new Chiss Superweapon with the ability to destroy a world. They call it the Tyrant. Once completed, this weapon could spell doom for the entire galaxy.

Aboard the GDI Command Ship, the Supreme Commander plans an all out assault against this target to keep the galactic peace…

The storm clouds above New Alderaan suddenly split open, releasing torrents of rain against the surface. As the citizens scramble for cover, the first thunderclap sounds, followed by a jolt of lightening. The peace has been shattered. It has begun.

GDI Third Fleet – Elysia Orbit

“What is it?” Supreme Commander Isstal, leader and founder of the Galactic Defence Initiative, stared into the 3D representation that filled the briefing room. The orange outlines of the huge scissor-shaped warship gave off an eerie luminescent glow. The man on the low platform, one Colonel Ross, turned to the Supreme Commander.
“They’ve taken to calling it the Reprisal,” he said. “The ship itself is similar in all aspects to the Darksaber project the Hutts once envisioned. Only the Chiss are a much superior and more efficient race.” The image shifted to the massive craft in orbit over a planet. The ship shuddered for an instant, then a bright green laser beam leapt forward from the joint between it’s two scissor arms.

Helios System – Elysia Sector

The beauty of the Helios system was lost on Emperor Pinzc as he looked down at the planet. A single set of footsteps sounded behind him. The Emperor turned and smiled slightly.
“Mace, my old friend.” He is smile grew as he saw that it was his old friend. “What have you been up to?” The other Chiss bowed slightly.
“Evidently nothing as interesting as you, my lord. I hear that you’ve had quite a month.” The Emperor nodded.
“Indeed we have, my friend.” The Chiss turned back to the windows and gazed down at the planet.
“The Galactic Defence Initiative.” It was a statement rather than a question. The Emperor smiled.
“You are very well learned in the events of the last month, Mace. Tell me, where have to obtained this information?” Mace laughed.
“You know I can’t tell you that.” The Emperor nodded.
“Always worth a shot, my friend. You do realize though that I am the Emperor,” He turned back to face Mace, “and when I want sometime, I usually get it.” Mace smirked.
“You wouldn’t hurt me, my lord. You couldn’t wound a friend.” The Emperor shrugged.
“Times have changed, Mace. You never know.” His smile broadened and Mace realized he was joking, joining in the laughter.
“Indeed they have. Now we must make sure to survive.”

New Alderaan – Government Complex

“This state of war is not to be tolerated! The Chiss have done nothing, nothing I say, to deserve this action against them! Are we not acting as Emperor Palpatine, a man you all risked your lives to defeat, once did?

This has gone to far! An immediate cease to all hostilities, the return of any and all seized property, and an apology to the Chiss people are in order! This is simply ridiculous! Intolerable behaviour!”

“Ambassador, please. Be reasonable. You know as well as I do that the Chiss Empire possesses strength enough to kill us all, yourself included. Do you really believe that by apologizing and returning what we took we can settle things with the Chiss? You think that they’ll hunker down and let us live? No! What’d done is done, and we must, more now than ever, continue and finish what we have started. If not the consequences could be devastating.”

“Listen to yourself! You let yourself be swayed so easily? The Chiss are reasonable! I’m sure that if we apologize and retreat now there will be no future repercussions! The Chiss will be glad that we did not destroy them! They will thank us, Ambassador, for sparing them!” The woman who had countered the ambassador spat in disgust, but said nothing.

“This meeting will come to order!” The chairman’s voice boomed across the senate hall. “We must vote on the issue at hand. Ambasadors?”

Elysia System

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake
–Napoleon Bonaparte

This is a mistake. No, not a mistake. A disaster. Supreme Commander Isstal slammed his fist through the hologram. What kind of bloody fool would want to rebuilt the Death Star?

He sighed irritably. This whole campaign had been blown out of proportion by the discovery of this new superweapon, and now it threatened to consume the Galactic Defence Initiative. Isstal swore.

“This is not possible. This is not possible!” He sighed and collapsed back into his chair. It had been a long day, and within two minutes he was asleep.

Helios System – Elysia Sector

A trio of speedy A-wing scouts reverted to realspace with a quick, bright flash and threw themselves into the system. Their sensors began to register, catalogue, and transmit each individual warship as they passed.
Confirmed: Imperial-class Star Destroyer
Confirmed: Imperial-class Star Destroyer
Confirmed: Carrack-class Light Cruiser
Confirmed: Victory-class Star Destroyer
Confirmed: Lancer-class Anti-starfighter frigate

The list grew longer as the scouts made the last run of the flash past and raced towards their exit point. Suddenly the space around them was filled with light. A Star Destroyer had emerged from hyperspace directly in front of them. Recon One’s ship slammed into the mammoth vessel’s invisible deflector shields before the pilots knew what was happening. The second was hit at point-blank range by an ion shot that cracked the canopy and sent the ship spiralling, out of control. The third ship grazed the enemy vessel before rocketing away into hyerpspace.

Recon Two swore as his ship was struck by the ion bolt. Hearing the sound of cracking glass, he looked up to see thousands of microcracks in the canopy. He swore again and munched the emergency restart button on the dash. Noithing. He punched it again. Nothing. He began to punch it repeatedly, yelling at it to start and praying for some divine miracle. It never came. His ship lurched as a tractor beam on board the Star Destroyer locked on and pulled him towards the hanger bay. He stifled a whimper and primed his self-destruct sequence. If he was to die, he’d be damned if he wasn’t going to take some of the @#%$ with him.

The fighter settled in the cavernous bay of the Star Destroyer and was immediately surrounded by a squadron of Chiss soldiers. Recon Two looked out at them and smiled, then mouthed the word ‘Boom’. The ship was tossed backwards as the concussion missiles it carried shot themselves off, slamming into the bulkheads of the hanger bay. The soldiers crowded around the ship. That was when it exploded. The fighter’s self destruct system, a 25 centimetre core of Bardium, tore a hole through the bottom of the Star Destroyer’s hold and reached deep space. The air in the hold vanished, sucked out along with what was left of the Chiss troops. It also achieved penetration through to deck sisxteen, and left twenty-seven Chiss clawcraft in ruins on the flight deck. The explosion punched a 100-meter sphere into the ship in all directions, setting it ablaze and making it another causality of the new war.

From the deck of his flagship Emperor Pinzc watched as the fire consumed the Nightingale. He sighed and turned to Mace.
“When will it end, Mace? I am to old for war.” The other Chiss frowned.
“It will not end, My Lord, until you decide it does. Until you strike back and push these outsiders out of Chiss space forever.” The Emperor sighed.
“Mace my friend, I am to old for war.” He bowed his head slowly and wiped a tear from his eye. “Mace, I want you to do me one last favour. Take our fleet, it is yours, and destroy these invaders. Punish them for their crimes against our people and drive them from out space.” The old man walked to the table and picked up a glass of fine wine.
“Please, Mace. Do this for an old friend.”

GDI Third Fleet - Elysia System

The news came as the fleet’s watch changed. Supreme Commander Isstal was in the ready room with his commanders when a nervous young lieutenant Isstal had never met chimed the door.
“What is it?” The Supreme Commander had snapped. “Can’t you see that we’re busy?” the lieutenant nodded feverently.
“Yes, sir. Sorry, sir. It’s just that-”
“Well, speak up man! What is it?” The lieutenant gulped.
“The Ruling Council has just voted on the issue, sir. They’ve… they’ve given the order to stand down.” Isstal stared at the man for a moment.
“Excuse me?”
“We’re to stand down, sir. Retreat back to New Alderaan and give the Chiss back their holdings.”
“No no no, lieutenant. The Council authorized this action months ago – it was voted on and approved.”
“Yes, sir. But some new member complained that they didn’t get their fair chance to speak and demanded a new vote. They voted to cancel the operation, sir.” Isstal shook hid head.
“This isn’t happening. Tell me this isn’t happening!” The lieutenant frowned.
“I’m sorry, sir. It’s over.” Isstal nodded weakly.
“You’re dismissed, soldier. Thank you.” He closed the door and let out a stream of curses. “Cancelled! We but our but for them, lose a hundred good men in the process, and they want us to give up and go home with nothing?” He slammed his fist into the wall. “Tell me this isn’t happening!” He slumped into his seat and let his head fall onto the table. “Tell me this isn’t happening… please… tell me-”

GDI Third Fleet – Unknown Regions

The Galactic Defence Initiative’s Third Fleet vanished from the Unknown Reasons with the same subtle silence it had retained on entry. All but one ship. The Defender-class Star Destroyer Elusive stayed behind, hidden from the fleet by the glare of an unnamed star deep in Chiss space.

With a single, fluid movement the starship turned and accelerated back the way it had come before jumping to hyperspace and vanishing from all.

GDI Third Fleet – New Alderaan

“This is ridiculous, Chairman!” Supreme Commander Isstal started at the flat screen image of the senate’s chairman, still aboard his command ship above New Alderaan.
“Supreme Commander, I agree with you. But the Council has voted, and they chose not to support you in the Unknown Regions any longer. I’m sorry.” The Supreme Commander shook his head.
“Bugger the Council, Chairman. I want you to declare a state of emergency and send us back into the Unknown Regions.” The chairman’s expression turned to shock.
“I certainly hope you are not suggesting-” Isstal cut him off.
“Don’t say it. You know what I’m suggesting. Do it.”
“I certainly cannot lie to the Council, Commander. I’m afraid you will have to wait for a re-vote.” The Supreme Commander laughed.
“A re-vote, Chairman? Surely you jest! There will not be time for a re-vote!”
“What do you mean, Commander?” The chairman asked curiously.
“Do you honestly think that the Chiss will accept our apology and let us off? No, Chairman. They will seek revenge. I guarantee it.”

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

The shuttle set down on the Emperor’s landing pad with a softer-than-usual thump.
“I certainly hope you do not hold this against us, My Lord. It was a mistake, and you have our deepest regret. If there is anything we can do, don’t hesitate to ask.” The Emperor turned and smiled.
“Actually, there is one thing you could do, Ambassador.” He said softly. The Ambassador smiled broadly.
“Name it, and it will be done.” The Emperor smiled grimly.
“You can die for me, Ambassador.” He watched in satisfaction as the Ambassador realized the trap. A single soldier appeared behind him and slashed through the ambassador’s back with his vibro-blade. “You see, Ambassador, I do not take attacks on my Empire lightly. Did you really think an apology would set everything right?” The guard placed his foot on the man’s neck and pressed down. “Now you learn the cost of attacking the Chiss Empire, Ambassador.” The Emperor smirked at the dying man, then turned and stalked away. The guard levelled his blaster rifle at the Ambassador’s head and pulled the trigger, then followed his Emperor into the building.

Outside, the birds began to peck away at the body of the former ambassador.

New Alderaan – Government Complex

“Chairman, the threat of the Chiss Empire is still rampant! We cannot ignore them, and they will attempt to attack us! You have my word!” The Chairman frowned at GDI’s Supreme Commander.
“Commander, we have the assurances of the Emperor that the Chiss will not attack. Furthermore, with the formation of the Csillan Border Defence, there is little likelihood of a Chiss attack on our forces.”
“Chairman, with all due respect to the Csillan Border Defence, they have no ships. Should the Chiss choose to attack at this time, which they will, there is little CBD can do to stop them!”
“Supreme Commander, you are paranoid!” It was a new voice this time. “The Emperor has guaranteed that he holds no grudge against the Galactic Defence Initiative! We have sent an ambassador to Elysia to remedy the situation!” Isstal sighed.
“Ambassador, it is obvious you do not understand the Chiss. They will seek revenge and they will seek it here! By attacking them and not finishing our mission, we have left ourselves open for attack!”
“We have sent an ambassador!”
“And where is your ambassador? Dead, probably, at the hands of the Chiss!”
“The Chiss our not our enemies, Commander! They are-” He was cut off as the complex’s emergency broadcast system came to life, warning of an incoming fleet from the Elysia Sector.
“You were saying, ambassador?” Then the Supreme Commander was gone, rushing out the door to get back to his flagship before it was to late.

GDI Third Fleet – New Alderaan Orbit

Supreme Commander Isstal arrived on the bridge of the Black Rose, and ignoring the crew who had failed to rise on his entry, approached the captain. “No time for pleasantries, Captain. What’s the situation?” The man spun and pointed out the viewport.
“Not good, sir. They’ve got say forty ships out there, no less than twenty of which are Star Destroyers. Mostly Victories, but there are at least six Imperial-class and we think we’ve spotted a custom model that’s serving as a flagship. It may be a knockoff of the Allegiance.” Isstal nodded.
“We are under attack by hostile forces! Action Stations! Action Stations!” The voice reverberated through the flagship as the massive turbolaser batteries came on line and pivoted to face the enemy, though they were far out of the maximum range for the weapons and the gesture was futile. Outside, the enemy fleet slowed and arrayed itself for battle. The Supreme Commander smiled and gave the order.
“Accelerate to attack speed. Straight-V formation, we’ll bring them up the centre.”
“All fighters away!” Another voice called out, followed swiftly by a warning that they were entering target range.
“Shields: maximum power, double front. All batteries, open fire.” With the polished moves of a fleet trained above and beyond the norm, the Galactic Defence Initiative’s warships arranged themselves and began to pour their fire into the enemy fleet. The Straight-V formation called for the fleet to array itself in a straight battleline at the offset of the engagement, and stay that way until they met the enemy. At that point, the ships would slide into new positions to form the two sides of a letter V, usually with the flagship of the fleet at its pinnacle. This particular Straight-V carried an extra bonus: the pinnacle and lead ships (the vessels at the top of the sides) were Imperial Immobilized 418 Cruisers – Interdictors – and their presence prevented the Chiss fleet from making the jump to hyperspace.

And that was the key.
“Helm, bring us ninety degrees to port, bring our superstructure to bear on the enemy fleet and rotate us forty-five degrees. Continue firing.” Isstal leaned back in his command chair and, ignoring the somewhat puzzled on the captain’s face, looked out at the fleet as it re-arranged itself in the midst of combat. “On my mark, cut off all power to the Interdictors and have them jump to Grid Coordinates 0057-Alpha with all possible speed.” He waited for just a moment, then, “Mark!” Immediately the triple spheres representing a hyperspace mass shadow vanished, and seconds later the trio of cruisers had vanished into hyperspace. The Supreme Commander smiled. “Alert the Interdictors for a Three Point manoeuvre,” he paused. The next words were spoken quietly and coldly. “Delta Signal.” At once space around them erupted with fire. Jumping in from two separate angles were the massive Torpedo Spheres, planetary siege weapons designed to bring down shields. On the capital ships they faced, they poured out utter destruction. Half an hour later, it was all over.

Elysia – Capitol of the Chiss Empire

“My Lord, the reports have come in from New Alderaan.” The aide spoke uneasily, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Chiss Space Forces could, even without the Force, sense the nervousness coming from the man. He turned slowly and gazed at the man with his penetrating, red eyes.
“What word?” He asked in his usually, cat-like purr. The aide swallowed apprehensively.
“The fleet has been routed, my lord.” He said. “They suffered 90% losses and are now limping home. They have yet to reach the outer perimeter.” The Commander-in-Chief frowned.
“Regrettable, to be sure,” His voice betrayed none of the anger he must have been feeling, “But we are now in a position to completely destroy the Galactic Defence Initiative.” He had turned back towards the viewport, not realizing that the aide was still there.
“Sir?” he asked, not quite sure if that last comment had been addressed towards him, or if the Commander-in-Chief was thinking aloud as he often did.
“Never you mind,” his back still turned to the man, he smiled, “Never you mind.”

New Alderaan – Government Complex – Private Chambers

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Supreme Commander Isstal spoke to Colonel Ross, who was standing near the door of the chamber with a somewhat agitated expression on his face. “They can’t still be pushing for a no aggression-” he was cut off by the buzzing of the wall comm. “Yes?”
“Sir, we’re getting a report from Ord Mantell. There’s an Chiss fleet in orbit demanding the planet’s surrender.” The Supreme Commander gave the Colonel a glance, then spoke.
“And? Ord Mantell’s shields can hold, can they not?” A pause.
“Yes sir, but the commander thought you should know anyway.”
“He was correct in assuming so. Thank you.” He reached over and shut the unit off, then turned back to Ross.
“What will the senate think when they get wind of another attack?” The Colonel asked.
“The Senate will think it is time to act. Ambassador Or’aka, on the other hand, will want us to hold back out attack.” It was then that Colonel Ross saw.
“The Ambassador is a Chiss spy?” he breathed. Isstal smiled but shook his head.
“Close, Colonel, but not quite. Ambassador Or’aka is under the influence of the Chiss. They have transferred great sums of money into his various accounts.”
“So we blow the whistle on him and that’s that?” He asked hopefully.
“Not quite, Colonel. We let the good ambassador carry the word to the Chiss that he has persuaded the Council not to attack. Then we will strike.” Colonel Ross looked at the Supreme Commander, who smiled and nodded.
“No, he’s not a spy. But the Chiss influence is enough to make sure he reports on whether or not we’ll be moving against him or not.”
“And then when they’re not expecting it…”
“Precisely, Colonel. The fleet has already moved to Combat Two. They will be ready to move out at a moment’s notice. By the time our dear friend the Ambassador reports the state of emergency I’ve declared we’ll be striking.” He glanced down at a datapad and sat behind the large desk that took up most of the rear section of the office.
“What further reports of the Reprisal?” he asked, sifting through those that he already had and looked down at the ship that was so similar to the Death Star. The Colonel looked to his own datapad and shook his head.
“Not much to go on, I’m afraid. With the orders for complete withdrawal we have no assets left in Chiss Imperial space. There are a few unsubstantiated rumours from smugglers and the like, but nothing concrete.” The Supreme Commander shook his head.
“Of course not. Let’s hear about these rumours, then.” Colonel Ross looked back to his datapad before continuing.
“There have been several large groups that have been making shipments to the planet Helios, large quantities of metals and other materials essential for starship construction. They also report a heightened security in the system. They seem to know something is up, they just don’t know what it is.” Isstal smiled.
“They want us to believe they are building it in the Helios system. Lure our fleets there and destroy them,”
“Our fleets aren’t even in the area, sir. And for what they know, it won’t be again.” Isstal nodded.
“Exactly, captain. They have thought it through indeed. If we do attack Helios, they spring their trap and destroy our fleet, thus they win. If we don’t attack at all, they gain their little toy and win anyway.” He leaned back in the chair and pondered this for a moment. “Unless,” he said carefully, “they know that we know Reprisal isn’t being built in the Helios system.”
“Sir?” Colonel Ross ventured, wary of the Supreme Commander when he was in this mood.
“It’s simple, Colonel. They make a foolish yet convincing attempt to make us think it’s being built in the Helios system. We immediately see through their lie and determine it’s not in the system, when it fact it is. I’ll admit that it makes for a good plan, if risky.”
“So you think it is being built in the Helios system, sir?” Ross asked.
“Of course not, Colonel. The Chiss are hardly foolish enough to leave it lying around there in case their original deception does fool us. But, we must be careful to make them think that we think that is where we are going to strike. That will leave the real location totally ripe for the plucking.” He gazed at the ceiling for a moment before continuing. “Can you give me a breakdown of what we know of the Chiss fleet’s locations?” The Colonel fiddled with his datapad a moment, then the window, actually a video screen showing an image fed to it by a camera on the roof, turned into a flat map of the Chiss systems, complete with defensive installations. Isstal studied it for a moment, and then pointed to one planet. “Yes,” he said almost to himself. “Small enough to remain inconspicuous, lacking the necessary facilities… and close enough to Helios for them to back us up should we attack there.”
“Naraka, sir?” Colonel Ross hazarded, sceptical that the Chiss would build their superweapon there of all places. “Surely Csilla, or Elsyia would be a better choice?”
“Csilla,” the Supreme Commander reminded him, “is under the control of the New Republic. And Elysia, I’m sure they know we have agents there. Besides, the capital would be to obvious a choice.”
“The Emperor hid two Death Stars in orbit over Coruscant,” the Colonel pointed out. Isstal turned, intrigued at this.
“Oh? Let me tell you something, Colonel. The Coruscant Death Stars are a creation of the Imperial propaganda machine. Those images, altered by computers, are of Torpedo Spheres. They were not Death Stars, as the Empire would have you believe.” The Colonel slumped.
“So we strike at Naraka then, sir?” He asked. Isstal laughed.
“Hardly, Colonel! We attack here.” He pointed to a planet on the map in front of him.
Helios. Where the Chiss Empire had set its trap.

Elsyia – Capital of the Chiss Empire

“By all accounts, the Galactic Defence Initiative will not be attacking. Our friend on the Council has convinced them that attacking us here would be a fool’s errand.”
“And should they attack, they will not come near Helios. They know the trap that awaits them here. And so they shall strike at Naraka, and we will destroy them there.” The Emperor nodded, pleased by this.
“We will crush them wherever they attack,” he said, smiling. “The Galactic Defence Initiative dies now.” He said delightedly.
“Not if they do not attack us,” The other pointed out.
“If they do not attack you will take the fleet and destroy them on their own grounds.” Mace sighed and nodded.
“Yes, milord.” Mace turned back to the holographic map and smiled. “Walk into my trap, little mouse, and die.”

GDI Third Fleet – Naraka

The voice of the duty officer calling out the time to reversion and the sound of the hyperdrive engines roaring as they slowed the ship drowned out the last of the reports. As the duty officer called out ‘Reversion’ the spiralling blue tunnel that was hyperspace vanished, to be replaced by the tiny points of far away stars. And filling the viewport, the planet Naraka.
“Sir, we have enemy warships on scope. They’re moving to intercept!” General Nothos nodded and turned to the sensor operator.
“Shields to full. Accelerate to flank speed and launch all starfighters.” He smiled. “Prepare to repel assault.” The six Star Destroyers, three of the massive Imperial class and the other three of the smaller, newer Defender class sped up, their powerful ion engines leaving a blue ion efflux trail three times their length behind them.
“Contacts entering maximum firing range. Targets confirmed as Imperial-class Star Destroyers.” The duty officer reported. “We’ve also got three Dreadnaughts coming in from behind.” General Nothos glanced down at his sensor screen.
“Have Interrogator break off and engage the Dreadnaughts,” he ordered. While the loss of one of the big Imperial Star Destroyers would hurt the force, the remaining five ships would be more than able to handle the three enemy ships coming towards them.
“All batteries: open fire.”

Elsyia – Capital of the Chiss Empire

“Sir! We’re getting a priority report from Naraka! A Galactic Defence Initiative fleet is attacking, sir!” Mace nodded, a smile forming on his faint blue face.
“Alert Fleet Group One to go to their aide. Have Fleet Group Two standby.” The officer who had initially given the report nodded and began to relay the orders. Within minutes, Fleet Group One had broken off from Helios and was making full speed towards Naraka. Fleet Group Two was not far behind.

GDI Third Fleet – Hyperspace

“Sir, we’re coming out of hyperspace now.” Supreme Commander Isstal swivelled the command seat towards the starboard crew pit.
“Shields to full. Everyone, Combat One. We’re going in hot.” The crew acknowledged, and the fleet shifted slightly as the ships’ shields went up.
“Sir, transmission coming through from the enemy fleet.” Dxun Isstal nodded.
“Put it on screen.” The hologram of a blue-faced Chiss with the rank insignia of a Commodore appeared. If the elaborate jewel on his opposite shoulder was anything to judge by, he was also a Baron or Duke of some kind.
“Galactic Defence Initiative forces, this is Commodore O’tek. You have entered Chiss Empire space. Cease and desist now and leave or you will be fired upon. Any hostile actions will be met with full resistance.” The Supreme Commander dialled the com and smiled.
“Commodore, a pleasure I’m sure. You know by now that our force outnumbers you two to one, and,” he glanced down at the built-in chrono that was keeping both standard and local time, as well as mission time, “and according to my sources, you’ll be getting a report now that your forces in the Naraka system are cut off.” To underscore his point, an alarm began to buzz in the background. The Commodore scowled and cut off the transmission.
“He didn’t even say goodbye.” The Supreme Commander looked out the viewport and sighed heavily. “All stations, prepare to do battle. Launch all starfighter squadrons and set up a holding sector as planned.” The ships began to move into their preassigned positions.

Elsyia – Capital of the Chiss Empire

“Sir, the enemy has anticipated our trap at Naraka. They are attacking Helios en mass… they are not sure if they can hold.” Mace lashed out and grabbed the man, a human man, and growled.
“Make sure they hold, or it will be your life.” He threw the man against the far wall and snarled. “This is not how it is supposed to be!” He slammed his fist against the transparasteel viewport, hard enough that microscopic cracks appeared and spread like a web across the glass. Mace placed his hands on his temples and massaged them lightly.
“Alert Fleet Group Six and have them destroy the enemy at Helios. We will make sure one of our worlds survives this assault.” The man nodded and, still pained by being thrown into a wall, slunk away. He smiled grimly. Maybe, just maybe, a victory could be produced from this defeat.

GDI Third Fleet – Helios

The burning wreckage of close to two-dozen starships filled the sky above Helios as night came to the surface. Remarkably, not one of those ships belonged to the Galactic Defence Initiative. Their ships, certainly, were blaster scorched and carbons scored. Some were burning, and others showed obvious signs of heavy damage, but not one had been declared lost. Even now, smaller ships were repairing the damage, making those damaged ships operational for the final push against the Chiss Empire. A push that would come soon, with a brutal quickness and end the last threat to the galaxy.
