Hapes

Zate Gunnang stood before the massive hanger. His arms crossed behind his back, he watched his men work. Every single piece of Contractor Seven, the Commonwealth Freighter that had exploded between Hapes and Gallinore, could be found here. Most of the remains, especially the hyperdrive and other components were charred blacker than a Sith Lord.

Investigator Gunnang was a rare breed. Starship accidents were quite common place, but it is not often that a ship just explodes for no particular reason, especially Commonwealth government vessel. Rigorous inspections and a dedicated mechanic corps made such an incident rarer than even Investigator Gunnang. This seemed to be a unique situation, one that raised questions.

Thirty people had been killed. None of the bodies had been recovered. They were atoms now. Contractor Seven had been carrying a team of masons who would be constructing a Commonwealth governmental building on Hapes. The ship had also been carrying their equipment. Families of the victims had been informed. No details have been given out yet. They would be no press releases until Investigator Gunnang and his team had some duracrete answers.

Doing a self taught (Zate had flat fleet) yet perfect about face, Zate made his way to a temporary work station. His second in command, Brent Sicle, was meticulously cataloguing every single component in the hanger. Another contingent of his staff was doing an exhausting search of any piece literature remotely related to the vessel. This ranged from a repair log to the ship’s cargo and passenger ledger. Even a compilation of the ship’s mission reports for the last five years could be found among the mass of flimsiplast.

Zate was finding this entire investigation disturbing to the point that it was unnerving. It was just too similar to the events that transpired at Fondor. He had taken part in that investigation as well. Hired by the family of one of White Nova Line passengers to get a second opinion free of any Imperial manipulations, his investigation had been very revealing. The accident was not caused by a faulty hyperdrive regulator. INS had put quite the spin on the story.

“Have they found the hyperdrive regulator yet?” question Zate.

“No, Investigator Gunnang. It was completely incinerated. We found something else though. There was a fragment of the casing of a Merr-Sonn TB-47 time bomb imbedded in a bulkhead fragment.”

“Oh shit… Did this ship stop anywhere between Etti-IV and Hapes?”

Brent scanned his datapad for the information. “Gallinore, sir.”

The trail was running cold among the wreckage on Hapes. “Pack it up. We’re going to Gallinore.”

Gallinore – Ritz Security Desk

“Wait! Rewind it!” ordered Zate to the holocam technician. “Zoom in on that man’s face and try to run a match to anyone on the crew ledger.

“No matches.”

The holocam feed showed a brown haired man making his way out of the restaurant. The feed switched to a camera outside of the lobby. The man could be seen crossing the street and out of the corner of the camera’s field of view, entering an employee entrance to the Gallinore Transit Authority.

“Run it through all available databases. You have my permission to run it through the god damn sex offender database if you have to. I need a match.”

“No need, that’s Adrian Thaedin. He’s fragging royalty.”

“That’s definitely a match. Did you get the Transit Authority holovids Brent?”

“No sir, the suspect or an accomplice had them removed.”

“Then we need to have a talk with Ms. Ans’suta.”

Gallinore – Royal Police Station Alpha Seven

“We know that you went out to dinner with Mr. Thaedin, but we also know that your relationship with him was beyond romantic.”

The Gallinore Transit Authority employee dabbed her tearing eyes with handkerchief.

Unable to even speak due to almost paralyzing fear (she had never been in trouble a day in her life), she simply nodded.

“Ms. Ans’suta, do you realize that I have enough evidence in my datapad to indict you on thirty counts of murder in the second degree?”

The flood gates opened, and the women began to cry uncontrollably.

“Sweetheart, you’re a nice girl with a perfect record. If you cooperate with us, I can make that all go away.”

The young woman was so scared that she could barely sit up straight. He hands were shaking uncontrollably. She had dropped her wet handkerchief to the cold duracrete floor of the police station. Zate bent down to pick it up.

“We’ll give us some information honey?”

She nodded, still unable to speak.

Later

“Brent, I want you to forward all of this information about the Contractor Seven incident back to Hapes. Send it to who ever is in charge on Relephon too. I think we have enough evidence to get this son of a bitch expedited.”

“Yes sir.”

“See if we get some people out here too. You and I have service pistols, but I want some boys packing a little more heat. Also, we need a liaison with the Hapan Police and military. See if you can take care of that too.”

“Yes Investigator Gunnang.”

Solaris Police Headquarters, Relephon Moons

"Interesting..."

Sevaedus, Lord Protector of the Relephon Moons drumed his fingers against the cold durasteel table, and watched the security videos from the fashionable Ritz cafe on Gallinore for the third time. The familiar face ran through the system again and again, each time displaying the same romantic charm and prowess that it had before. He was a sunningly handsome man, even by Hapan standards and somehow he always got his way with all of the women, and sometimes even some men.

Adrian Thaedin, well known throughout the Hapan cluster not only for his romantic charm and his stunning beauty, but for his wealth and influence was displayed on the security feeds not only from the Ritz cafe, but also from the Gallinore Transit Authority. Though the feeds themselves did not show Adrian in the act of commiting terrorism, the evidence against him was substantial.

Of course, the secret remained that Sevaedus knew exactly what had happened. In fact, he'd debriefed Adrian personally after the attack was completed, and had informed the Crown Prince of their success shortly after the freighter had erupted into flames. However, none of that mattered now. What interested him the most was that the Consortium was no longer running the investigation efforts, but the Commonwealth itself was exercising it's authority within the cluster.

"Get me a line to the Crown Prince." Sevaedus demanded firmly.

"Y-Yes sir...." the frail female voice of the elderly secretary cracked. It wasn't every day that the Lord Protector himself visited the police headquarters, let alone spoke to her personally.

"Prince D'alaetos, we've received a transmission from Commonwealth investigation forces on Gallinore asking questions about Adrian."

"Commonwealth?" Lucian's voice seemed intrigued and excited, rather than suprised.

"Yes your majesty, Commonwealth."

"Interesting...."

"They've transmitted a security feed showing Adrian entering the Mass Transit compound the night before the attack occured and are requesting full cooperation with the investigation. What do you recommend?"

"The Commonwealth has no jurisdiction in the Cluster, and certainly holds no jurisdiction on the Relephon Moons... however, I'm curious to discover what they know and why they are running the investigation instead of Hapan investigation teams."

As Lucian spoke, Constable Reikar entered through the airlocked doors followed closely by a fimiliar face and tossed a small stack of files on the desk. Sevaedus began to thumb through them as Lucian spoke.

"Send the following transmission, Sevaedus....

"To whom it may concern,

The Relephon Moons do not support or condone acts of terrorism. While the government of the Relephon Moons does not recognize Commonwealth authority to investigate Hapan crimes, a tribunal of Relephon investigators will look into the claims submitted by your investigation teams. The criminal outlaw in question, Lord Adrian Thaedin, has a long-standing history of mischievious activities throughout the cluster and has not been seen or heard from in the Relephon System in a number of intergalactic years. Incorporated with this transmission are a list of crimes on record for the person in question. We look forward to your shareing of any further details of this pending investigation and will share with you any information we aquire on the case."

Sevaedus nodded his head, jotting down the last few words of Lucian's statement. Tossing the pad to the Constable for transmission, Sevaedus leaned back and looked out the window at the beautiful sprawling city of Solarium, capital of Solaris and financial capital of the Relephon Moons.

"That's all they've got so far? A couple of lousy videos?"

Adrian Thaedin's signature cocky smirk crossed his lips as he raised an apple to his lips and took a mouthful.

Sevaedus returned the smirk, but was far less confident in himself.

"They have you on holocam entering the Mass Transit Authority."

"Yeah?" Adrian spit a few drops of apple juice onto the desk as he spoke. Sevaedus wiped the droplets away and continued.

"Yeah, that means they put you at the scene of the crime right before it happened."

"Me and about three hundred other people..."

Sevaedus sighed and surrendered himself to Adrian's cocky and immature ways.

"Just be thankful you're in the good graces of the Prince, Adrian. If you weren't, I'd be half tempted to turn you over to the Commonwealth and let them hang you."

Adrian grinned again.

"You and half of the women in the Cluster...."

Gallinore

Zate pulled the flack goggles over the area of his face left exposed by the black mask. His finger stroked the trigger of his blaster carbine as he raised it to his shoulder. An armored police officer stepped up to the apartment’s entrance.

“This is Hapan Royal Police. Open the fucking door!” he yelled, as his fisted hand banged on the door.

No reply.

Another police officer stepped up to the door. His battering ram made the door comply. The police team rushed the apartment.

Screams of “get the fuck down” were punctuated by one shot.

Zate clicked his comlink. “Status?”

“Suspect was going for a weapon,” replied the Hapan.

Zate pulled off is mask to get a good look at the apartment. Informants had reported that this was the last place Adrian Thaedin had been seen. Contraband was everywhere. Drugs, military grade blasters, bomb making material. The Prince had bought a tough crowd to do his dirty work.

Interrogation

“I’m going to ask you one more time. What do you know about Adrian Thaedin?” repeated Zate, irritably.

“Go fuck yourself, you fucking government pig!” yelled the suspect detained at Adrian’s apartment.

Seven Hapan men had been arrested at the apartment. The men had been split up and interrogated separately. They were a kind of anarchist fringe group. They wanted completed destruction of the Monarchy and now the Commonwealth. Zate stepped out the interrogation room.

“That shit head isn’t budging,” murmured Zate to his Hapan Royal Police counterpart.

“Lie to him then. If you make him scared, he’ll spill it.”

Zate nodded and walked back into to darkened interrogation room.
“One of your ‘comrades’ just confessed everything he knew,” lied Zate. “So that leaves you totally fucked unless you start talking.”

The anarchist chuckled. “You’re not getting anything out of me, pig.”

Zate took a seat at the durasteel table. “You know what the Commonwealth is doing to traitors right now?” asked Zate. “The Commonwealth has taken millions of casualties in the last couple of months to the forces of the Domain. We don’t have time for traitors. We don’t even have time for alleged traitors. If you are a traitor, or I, as a Commonwealth Police Investigator believe that beyond a possible doubt that you are a traitor, you will be shot. I swear by the force that I will take you outside this police station and put two in your head. You can forget a trial fuckhead.”

That was not a lie.

"I'm not a Commonwealth citizen! How can I be a traitor?" he argued.

"Your government signed the Accord! So you're a traitor whether you choose to believe it or not!" Zate returned.

"I've got a kid, man. You can't do this to me..." His attitude and tone had changed.

Zate exhaled. "Honestly... I don't give a fuck. I don't give a fuck about you. I don't give a fuck about Hapes. What I do care about is doing my job." Zate folded his hands and looked straight into the traitor's eyes. "I'm here to do my job. If that involves killing you or one of your dumbshit friends. I'll do it. Don't try me, because I'll fucking do it.

The anarchist was sweating now, so he loosened his collar and told Zate everything he knew about Adrian Thaedin.
