We departed from the Tund system this afternoon. I must say, I never thought I'd see the day that I would see a planet so lifeless and desolate. Strangely, a comforting glow lit up the night skies as the Akorec made it's final orbit at the planet's north pole. All I could think of was you my darling daughter. I dream of the day when I can look into your beautiful brown eyes once again, and hold you in my arms.

This afternoon, we are supposed to make a scheduled stop at Dreka Station just outside of the Rafa System for a quick refueling before heading toward the StarCave. I suppose I shouldn't remind you of how far away from home I am. I hope to send this transmission as soon as we reach the station. Please know that I am well, and sincerely hope that you are too.

Love always,

Dad

It's been nearly two weeks since my last transmission. Please forgive any worries that you might have had over my delay. The Rafa System is even more grand than I could have ever imagined. The Rafa Chabalrussa Casino is by far one of the best me and the guys have ever seen. I played a few games of Sabacc before turning in to a local hotel just outside of Teguta Lusat a couple hours later. It cost me half a month's salary, but it was well worth it.

We took an asteroid blow to the ship a couple of days back. It knocked us all for a loop when it connected with the aft shields, and it nearly knocked the ship off course entirely. The strange thing is that it wasn't charted on any of the navigational computers. The Captain suspects that it may have blown off course.

Love and miss you!

Dad

My dearest daughter, I fear that this may be my last transmission for several weeks. I miss you more than anything in the Galaxy, and wish nothing more than to be home for your birthday. I've asked a local freighter headed toward Erilnar to carry a package home for you. I hope that you enjoy your gift. It is known as a Life Crystal, though you must never tell anyone that you have one. Should anyone find out, it would likely be the end of my career within the Centrality Navy. I managed to smuggle it off of one of Rafa VII in my knapsack. I know with your current taste for mystery stories, you'd like that.

Pirates have attacked another one of the Centrality Trade Convoy's bound for the Oseon System. The Basilisk is sure to catch up with them in no time, and when we do I'll be sure to show them just what a father's love for his daughter can do! The quicker this little problem is solved, the quicker I can get home.

Love always,

Dad

I nearly forgot your Birthday card with all of the excitement of combat readiness brewing on the ship. I hope you like it, just a simple poem I picked up at the Library on Lekua V.

As a flower in the garden

Bending toward the sun,
Unfolds it's tiny petals
One, by one, by one...
So faith expands it's beauty
Until at last it grows
Into life's lasting flower...
The heart's fair perfect rose.

Keep the faith my dearest. I shall return home as soon as I can.

Best Birthday Wishes!

Dad

The first thing Stephanie Sapphire unpacked in her new lodgings was the silver-framed holographic display of her father. His bold chest seemed to fit nicely against his thick arms and dark black mustache, a feature she never cared much for as a child. It always managed to scratch her sensative cheeks when she hugged him. The place for her father ever since that sad day at the military crew rememberance procession for the Basilisk was on the nightstand of whatever room she happened to live in, evwen if it was only for one night. She took a straneg confort from the soft glow of his eyes watching over her as she slept, making her feel as though nothing could harm her.

After she had arranged the holograph so that her deceased father could look at her from a slightly offcenter position on the nightstand, she carefully unbuttoned her blouse and leaned back against the soft linens of the bed. At least these are clean she thought to herself as she kicked her black dress shoes off, letting them clatter to the hardwood floor below. With a relaxing sigh, she leaned back against the feathered pillow that dominated her bed as she reached inside of her blouse.

Removing the last artifact of her father's memory, the glowing Life Crystal he had sent home for her Birthday while he was away on deployment a streaming tear ran down her porceline cheek. The crystal itself hadn't arrived until nearly three days after news of the Basilisk's demise had reached Erilnar, and Scrivinir Sris Lehhett had declared a day of mourning. Not that any of that mattered, she thought. It wasn't going to bring her father back. As she rolled the luminous crystal around in her chubby fingers, a soft knock cast an ominous shadow over the purity of her memories.

"Stephanie Darling?" the woman's voice trembled as if she were too nervous to speak. She didn't reply.

Though the foster home was considerably nicer than those she had been shuffled through over the past few years, she knew that this one would be no different. In a month or two, the Centrality would revoke the funding and the foster parents would change once again.

"Stephanie, you have to eat darling...."

She shook her head and rolled over to face the opposite wall of the room as the door slowly creeked open. The woman was tall and slender with thick golden hair that gracefully hung over her petite sholders. Compared to herself, the woman was a goddess. Already, at sixteen she had put on considerably more weight than what was considered 'acceptable' by the upper-scale society on Erilnar. As the door closed, she closed her eyes and almost instantly plunged into her last refuge of happiness; her dreams.
