Well you remember that Kimbo guy that had all the street fighting videos? (This was one of his early ones but theres no shortage of highlight reels)

I guess he did a "real" fight and fared pretty well. It's entertaining to watch him bash up retards in backyards and parking lots but I don't know if he'd do any good against any real fighter thats not in their damn 40s.

Oh man there's tons of great Gracie videos.

Some interesting ones to watch are of various black belts wanting to try out their methods at the Gracie academy and just getting their asses handed to them, tributes to the Gracie family, and one of the more interesting things to watch though is Sakuraba beating (I think) every fighting member of the Gracie family.

Probably my favorite though is the Royce Gracie video showing the formation of UFC and chronicling his domination of the first UFC competition.

LOL. I can't post all of them for you.

Ok... here's some goodies...

These are some of the BJJ vs (insert martial art here). A common theme you'll see in all of these types of videos is that whatever style the Gracies are facing they don't even give them a chance to throw their kicks and punches, they just take them to the ground and force them to submit. The other fighters never have the opportunity to be in their own element. It's not glamorous, but it's real.

BTW Rickson was probably the most badass of the Gracies. He hasn't fought since the death of his son but he was a beast.

That's partially deceiving, though... generally, BJJ guys had an advantage because BJJ is much more of a complete discipline then hapkido or kempo or ninjitsu, which all primarily focus on standup work, where as jujitsu focuses on throws and submissions... which are directly designed to chew up standup fighters. If you watch a pure BJJ guy against a guy who can really wrestle and has great counter grappling power and a good sprawl, like a Matt Hughes or a Chuck Liddell, they can counter thate takedown, counter, and sometimes that can be the fight, because even though BJJ guys can be great from the bottom with triangles, they tend to be better when they have control, and it's hard to have control when you're mounted and being elbowed in the face. It's kind of odd how that works, since BJJ is primarily a defensively oriented form with a lot of emphasis on counterholds and counters to strikes, but it's best when applied offensively... I dunno, at least from what I've seen, and Hughes/Gracie speaks to that, though it's kind of misleading in the same way Ortiz/Shamrock is. BJJ is definitely superior to a straight stiking form, such as kickboxing or ninjitsu, but if you are using tehniques based on strong grappling or throwing ability, such as judo or amatuer wrestling, you can hold your own. It's why the UFC has moved from cluster->everyone using BJJ->everyone knowing a bit of everything, because the whole finding one dominant style thing has worn off, it's always better to have hands in lots of different cookie jars.

Oh, I'm not attesting that at all. Straight up BJJ could no longer wipe the matt with UFC fighters like it did at its formation. Royce was so successful back in 94 because (like Shamrock says in the last video I posted) no on besides him and Royce had a clue about grappling and submissions. The crowd booed when he broke some dudes leg because they had never seen anything like that before.

Nowadays the sport has evolved very very much. The fighting is no longer style centric, and because of that, the fighters are lightyears better and more dangerous than they were even 10 years ago.

I simply like the Gracie legacy because they somewhat brought about this transformation and made people realize, hey, we're going to have to incorporate this stuff into our fighting if we don't want to keep getting choked the fuck out.

That's also why I'm a huge Bruce Lee fan because him and his Jeet Kune Do was all about breaking the barriers of martial arts forms such as Wing Chun and advocating taking certain principles of fighting that he thought were key and adapting them to what works best for you. Lot's of people have referred to Jeet Kune Do as the precursor of MMA.

Same thing holds true with Bruce though... while I think he was lightyears ahead of his time and a freak of nature with his speed and strength... he'd get clobbered in the UFC ring nowadays with how far people have taken the fighting discipline.

A great story such as the Gracies and Bruce Lee is always fun to pay tribute to though. They really did a lot for the sport.
