Is AMD better than Intel?

I'm already looking in to building a PC system. Won't be until after my first tour when I have stockpiled a boatload of cash, but no harm getting psyched early. Just think... Almost 2g a month for 6 months with zero expenses.... hoorah. Time for a new computer and some car shopping.

Hey Beff, if you've got any advice or want to help me with a new system hit me up on AIM. I've been using this website: monarchcomputer.com

Edit: BTW, it's worth mentioning that I did just get a set of these badboys, which absolutely rock my world. Some people give me crap for it being a 2.1 system, but surround sound in my barracks room is just impractical. Besides, this is pretty much the best 2.1 system out there, and its got more power and better sound than probably a lot of 5.1 or 7.1 systems on the market. I got it to use not only with my computer but to hook up to the old ps2 when watching movies on the TV, etc. Definitely a good purchase.

Also, Beff, I've got a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS for my laptop. It just plugs into the laptops card slot. Was wondering if I should just stick my with my laptops sound card or if this is worth installing.

While I'm on the topic of sound, I don't know what program everyone uses to play their music nowadays, but if you're still using winamp, might I suggest downloading this thing. Install this and then turn it on and off and be amazed by the difference it makes. I couldn't believe how much it improved my sound, in both clarity and volume. It's like a sound card for winamp.

Edit: Holy crap, I must be retarded! After reading some reviews, sounds like this Audigy2 ZS notebook soundcard is the shit, with a $130 value! Supposedly better than a lot of desk top sound cards. This babys getting hooked up asap. And I thought my sound couldn't get any better. I may not have the greatest specs on this laptop, but it's sure going to sound great.

AMD over Intel:

AMD designs stable chipsets. Single or Dual Core; they run cooler and have a more sturdy construction.

Intel builds really smoking chipsets that run way too hot (watch out if you over-clock 'em) and advertises them at their true Ghz preformance rating. You can get a true 3GH Intel chip for cheaper then a 4000+ (3GHz) but I can pretty much promise you it won't be as stable or cool of a processor.

Intel is cheaper and it shows. AMD is more costly, but far worth the difference.

Sound:

Yes. Run the Audigy Zs for PC. It is the best card on the market for the price. It makes all the difference whether you're caught in a firefight, edititing audio, or just playing media.

Video:

Wait til Spring. The new cards (currently available at some crazy sky-high prices) will drop in price to affordable levels (with the new arrivals) and everyone will be running a new kick-ass card. I'll dig up the link.

Motherboard:

Asus, are you fucking crazy? Get Asus!

Yeah I saw that there were new graphics cards out in this article on gamespot. Those are too extreme for me, and will be even in the next year. I don't think I want to spring more than $300 for a video card. What can I get for around there? X1800 XL?

Also this article on a new AMD processor.

Beff: I'm thinking about dual GeForce 6800GS video cards for my next rig rather than dishing out $500 for one of the new uber-cards. Is this a sound decision, or do you have any other recommendations?

Actually fuck that check out this rig from monarchcomputer.com and let me know what you think. :D

http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=90307&Category_Code=AllNemesis

Case: Antec Sonata II Piano Black Quiet Mid Tower 450Watt ATX 2.0
Motherboard: Asus A8N-SLI NForce4 SLI Audio/GB-LAN/USB/PCI-E/SATA/DDR/ATX 64 939
Processors: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 512K 90nm Rev. E Venice (939)
Memory: 1 GB (2 pcs 512) DDR (400) PC-3200 Corsair (VS1GBKIT400)
Hard Drives: Western Digital Caviar SE 250 GB SATA3G 16MB Cache 7200 RPM (WD2500KS)
CD/DVD-RW: NEC ND-3550A 16X Dual Layer DVD±RW (OEM) (Black)
Video Card: 2 x PNY Geforce 7900 GT 256MB GDDR3/PCI-E/HDTV-Out/Dual-DVI

That's just the base system they offer. I am able to fully customize every aspect of the machine, which I'm sure I will do. For example, I've already discovered that the perfomance difference between the 3700 and 3800 Processor is not nearly worth the cost. But it's cool to see that basically what I want I can be getting for around 1500 + a good new monitor.

The 7900 GTs are the bees knees. I used to keep my computer pretty up-to-date but stopped when I started racing. Cars are expensive to race, especially when you go off road in a lil rear drive coupe. HELLO BLOWN STRUTS.

Beff, AMD doesn't make chipsets. ALi(bought by Nvidia), VIA, SiS, Nvidia and ATi do for AMD CPUs. What AMD does do is integrate the memory controller onto the chip, which means much much much lower latency and therefore better performance. AMD is coming out with a new socket pretty soon that supports DDR2 memory. Intel is still a bigger fish and the Conroe finally looks like a non-marketing driven designed chip. The P4 was designed for clock speed and little else. Conroe is actually derived from the Pentium Mobile (Centrino) with the good bits of the P4 splashed in.

The best thing about intel chips is intel chipsets, which are rock solid. The worst thing about intel chips is that they're not AMD with that wonderful integrated memory controller.

I'm currently rocking it 3 years ago with a mildly OCd Athlon XP
2.2ghz Athlon XP
Nforce 2 with Soundstorm (realtime dolby digital encoding oh god straight to my dolby digital reciever with actual speakers and not lame PC speakers unf)
GeForce 6600 GT 128MB
1 gig of DDR
Segate 120gb and 160gb hard disks, but I've got roughly a terrabyte of networked storage in the house.
DVD writer
bum bum bum
Dell 21" Trintron. CRT 4 lyfe.
