We were told at the department that at least one police officer has been killed and another wounded in the attempts to return order to LA. At least one volunteer firefighter drowned while attempting a rescue. I know there are fires raging in New Orleans but no firefighters there to combat them.

I heard that a team of snipers had been delievered to the rooftops of some of the taller buildings in New Orleans to start picking off looters.

The way I see it, Americans care when Americans die, Bangladeshians care when Bangladeshians die, it just so happens that Americans have more media so it sounds louder when they mourn. I imagine people in Bangladesh care roughly as much for New Orleans sinking as Americans care for when bad things happen to people in Bangladesh.

I mentioned the incident in Bangladesh only as an example, not because I'm Bangladeshi and I want people feeling sorry for my country. My point is that although there are plenty worse things happning elsewhere in the world, nobody gives a shit, unless of course the victim is American, etc. Like when that guy got beheaded or whatever -- everybody wept and sobbed and felt sick to their stomachs, but how many of those same people cared to think twice about the manner in which Iraqi soldiers, or even civilians for that matter, are being treated ?

Well, the vast majority of the world's most popular media is based in the U.S., and they might tend to focus more on matters at or concerning their home then they might about other matters abroad. That's just common sense.
