CS was out before 99. It went retail in 99 as version 1.0 , but before that there were the betas. I'm pretty sure I started somewhere in early 98 most likely, perhaps even 97. Back then the only way you could get it was by downloading it as a free mod for HL. Good times.

But as far as HL2, Source, and 1.6 goes... we should play sometime. I usually play under the name Ghosteh and love it.

As I said before, it was 1997. I started then.

However, you did say you bought it off the shelf as soon as it came out, as opposed to downloading it. Which means you started in 99.

I had downloaded it a couple years before it came out on shelf. I didn't have the retail version until I bought the Half Life Platinum set, which came with Team Fortress, Blueshift, CS, Half Life, and Opposing Force.

I almost bought that, but passed it up as I was already throwing my life away to battle.net.

I have never, ever paid for CS. I bought HL and then bought HL2 Silver from the Steam site. It came with CS:S, DOD:S, HL2, CZ, and some other stuff. I decided that it was worth it to spend 10 extra bucks and recieve a few extra games than to feel like I was spending all that money on one game.

Oh and I'm Salporin.
