@Seth. If you like music, then there is probably a message somewhere in the music. People usually don't just 'like' music simply because it is music, they like it because there is something about it that they enjoy, that would be the 'message'.

Well, it doesn't necessarily need to have a message per say, I wouldn't say. I tend to lump music into two categories - sound and substance. Some of my favourite tracks are instrumentals, and there's really no 'message' there - just a good sound. Even tracks with lyrics can sometimes just be good to listen to because of the mood the sound sets you in. Substance, on the other hand, is all about the message. Music like that normally has a lot more power to it, but substance without sound is just poetry, and normally kind of dull.

I'd disagree that instrumentals don't have a message... the sounds evoke feelings in you, which is that song's "message". For example, an instrumental can inspire pride, fear, sorrow, etc.

That's why sound is 60% of a movie. It's incredibly powerful. What would Lord of the Rings be without it's score?

Throw in some Sister Nancy, Toots and the Maytals, and Al Green and you an' me can have a little get-together.
