TRF Version 4 Wishlist

Basically, what I wondered is if it would be feasible to give groups the power to create their own sites hosted off the TRF server. There are lots of free alternatives, but very little with FTP access.

It certainly is a possibility.

If you make a new style, can you leave Portal Default as an option? In case some people don't like the new style but like Portal Default. I'm an old grumpy man who dislikes change.

Mention of Bold Blue

Mention of Dual

Request for Bold Red

I'm not sure what the new style will be, but almost certainly it will encompass all new changes and features and integrate the site even more -- a change similar to the difference between Bold Blue & Portal Default. I no longer provide support for anything but Portal Default (thusly why Dual and the Bold series is not updated as Zark mentioned). I've got limited time, so I like to provide one complete project rather than six mostly but never done.

What styles will stay and what will go will depend on the extent of the changes, but I'm pretty certain that the new method of organizing groups and the like will look like shit on anything but a style hacked to specifically display it correctly.

People are welcome to make their own styles though. Using Firefox or Opera you can easily change the style sheet for any website to one of your own design, which you could easily modify on your own computer until you get a look you like.

A sharp looking mud page would be cool...

... What?

Especially if it means each faction leader would be the Admin of their forums and free to make what changes they would like to the graphics and boards. I, for one, hate bugging other people to do it for me.

Group boards here are just subforums of TRF, with custom styles (to those lucky enough to have them). There is no way to allow access like you want. You can, of course, put your own forums up and we'll certainly link to you. This is how things were done years ago. The problem, and reason most groups are onTRF now is that with one unified login people are far more likely to post and visit other boards.

If you host your graphics on your own webspace, and we link to them, you can change it yourself any way you want at will.

First one should be easy: put the 'Create Folder' link back on the Subscription list page for all formats.

Certainly!

Second probably isn't as easy: I really miss the 'post as' drop down thingy you could do with EZboard Gold, so you didn't have to log out of one account so you could log in and post with another account. Sure I only have two accounts (or is it three?), but I know there are peeps here that seem to have a dozen of them....

Not possible. I looked into it, and as Sam said, the one hack would require an admin to link the accounts. There is also a definite security risk with this. Sorry, you'll just have to suck it up. :-P I will look into it again though, maybe something new has come up.

What can we do about security? Are there security updates we need to incorporate or an additional package to purchase?
Depending on the extent of changes made, we may have to upgrade. Security-wise, I'll do anything we need when the time comes, depending on if we upgrade to 3.6 or stay in the 3.0.x series.

I've always liked the idea of a gallery. Last time I was at Epics they had pretty nifty gallery options.

Is there a lot of demand for this? The picture gallery thread in The Commonwealth is popular, but not enough to seem to demand an entirelyseparate section. If there is a demand, we could certainly add one though. I'd hate to add a feature and see it stagnate.

I never look at the Portal because it just screams "busy" at me too.

Yes. My objective with the portal is to make it useful. Typically, usefulness comes by highlighting important and used features, and leaving other things out. We've got a lot of fat to trim and features to highlight.

Another forum I frequent has a gallery function... it's neat, but I've never used it. That said, a lot of people seem to.

Something else I find quite nice, is this same vB forum, when you edit a post, it doesn't take you to a new page... it just edits it in the thread page, kind of like the Quick Reply box. *shrug*

That's a feature of vB 3.5 and 3.6. We're still somewhere in the 3.0.x series.

Yeah, it's a shame since Portal Default is so ugly.

I've always thought of it as a "Buisness" sort of skin. Nothing fancy, but proves easy for those people who want to get in and get to work.
