Description:
The Imperial class Star Destroyer has been one of the most awesome and fear inspiring vessels of all time. First appearing during the golden years of the Galatic Empire, the wedge shaped vessel was huge compared to contemporary standards and boasted more powerful firepower and destructive capability then the vessels to come before it. Ultimatley at the height of the Empire twenty five thousand such vessels were built, but like all the ships to come before it, the usefulness of this mighty battleship is coming to an end. Currently a fleet of fewer than two hundred ships are employed by the Imperial Remnant, and fewer and fewer of these vessels are seeing service within the New Republic as they are replaced by more modern and powerful vessels.
There have been several different types of Star Destroyers. The first one was an excellent vessel but feel short in several categories. Most notable weaknesses include the shields protecting the vessel, which had several gaps in the coverage of the vessel that enabled Rebel starfighters to disable the ships with only a few proton torpedo hits. The second variant replaces most of the ion cannon weaponry with the destructive weaponry of turbolasers, and adds the new TIE interceptor to it's ranks, as well as fixing the problems with the shields the first variant had. This variant came into being between the Battle of Yavin and the Battle of Hoth. A notable batch of these vessels became part of Darth Vader's Death Squadron and formed a core part of the Endor fleet, and afterwards the survivors formed Thrawn's Core Star Destroyer fleet, and there are still a couple of these destroyers left in current Imperial service, the Relentless and Chimera. The third variant came into being during Thrawn's reign, and mainly constituted an improved starfighter capacity, incorporating another TIE Interceptor squadron as well as replacing the outdated TIE Bomber with the TIE Scimitar. The fourth variant came into being when the Empire transformed into the Imperial Remnant, and in an attempt to retain it's strength without being able to construct massive fleets, made it's existing vessels more powerful. The most notable change is the addition of capital ship-grade Proton torpedo launchers, and the adding of new combat systems like a cloaking device and the predictor combat analyzer, both of which have seen limited use. Also, the starfighter capacity has been changed, reflecting the loss of fighter manufacturing facilities. Finally, the fifth variant came into being during the New Jedi Order, and vastly transforms the Star Destroyer, eliminating much of the ground infantry capacity and upgrading the ship with the very latest in power core technology, re-roling the destroyer mainly as a space combat vessel. The ship's weaponry was expanded even more with laser cannons added to deal with the threat of Coralskippers, and the starfighter capacity was again changed as more powerful starfighters were needed, and the overall numbers needed were increased as well.
In addition to serving with the Galatic Empire, a number of destroyers have served with other navies. At least fifty such ships have served within the New Republic, some captured, some give as gifts, and others purpose built. Besides skirmishes and battles which have occasionally provided one or two destroyers, such as Coruscant, Mimban, Endor, etc., there were two notable incidents which provided an influx of Star Destroyers. The first occured when the Hapans present twelve destroyers captured from the Empire during the Dathomiri crisis to the New Republic during a diplomatic visit as an overture of good faith, and another occured when the Imperial Black Fleet, throwing off the reigns of their Yevetha overmasters and seeing the Empire all but vanquished, largely defected to the New Republic. In addition, during the Bacta War, a smuggler by the name of Booster Terrik came into possesion of a Star Destroyer during the final battle, and through a little realpolitik, was allowed to keep the vessel.
