Brief Description:
The Helixian Commonwealth is a small race of humans that came from a different galaxy. A galaxy that did not fare so well against the Yuuzhan Vong. Using a newly-developed hyperspace-like technology, a few warships and civilian transports bearing at least 5 million people escaped what was left of their small little part of the galaxy. They jump out system, out galaxy in fact, and into the Rebel Faction galaxy. Upon arrival, they discover an ancient alien artifact. The size, or rather diameter of a rather large planet. It is in the shape of two rings, one ring going through the other, or what can roughly be called a helix. On the lower levels, it is a structure made of a metallic substance, but on the upper levels, it is a nitrogen-oxygen based atmosphere, complete with weather patterns and drinkable water. The works for what a society would need. Stored deep in the mainframe lies something twice as valuable. All current standard technology. Apparently, an incredibly complex technology-gathering system was left on in the millions and millions of years the artifact has been abandoned, only to be shut down upon its reclaiming. After further investigation of the artifact and the rest of the system, it is revealed that it is the only "planet" able to support life. Not quite ready to explore the rest of this mysterious galaxy, and seeing no reason not to, the Commonwealth settled on the mysterious artifact. No sooner had something close to order been restored in their lives when they were found by the most unlikely and unwanted people imaginable. The same Vong Armada they had been running from. But the Commonwealth had recently discovered something else about the artifact. Not only did it store information, but a gigantic "superlaser". Just after the Armada had destroyed the warships and the now-abandoned transports, the Commonwealth planet-side activated the weapon, decimating the Vong. In doing so, however, they drained all of its energy. And, because of the technology it used, they would need more resources than TNO could ever hope to gather in a million years to power it back up again. Out of the ashes, one relatively undamaged shipyard emerges, a beacon of hope for the Commonwealth...
