Some quick pointers I normally go by when I design ships;
Weaponry; normally I design a ship's weaponry based on a rule that fifteen meters of starship length can have a heavy weapon or two medium weapons. Therefore a one hundred meter starship could have, like, 7 heavy turbolasers, and a couple of point defense lasers. Some exceptions may be made depending on what I'm focusing on.
Protection; for small ships, I normally base shields on 3x the length, and hull armour on 1-1.5x the length. For larger ships I normally do 10xlength for shields, and 5x for hull armour. Exceptions may apply.
And what I mean when I state exceptions may apply, is that normally you would focus on two of the three main aspects, making those two stronger than normal, and the other aspect weaker than normal. you can do all three, and have them being slightly under average for a starship of it's size.
Propulsion; Generally the rule I use here, is that small ships can travel up to 100 MGLT, ships up to 400 meters can travel up to 40 MGLT, and anything above that does about 10 MGLT, except where exceptions apply.
If I was doing say a gunship of two hundred meters, I might focus on weapons and speed and forgo protection as it's main traits.
Therefore I would say that weaponry is based on ten meters of hull length rather than fifteen, and speed is above normal, but in exchange protection might be below par, say a 2x-1x ratio instead of a normal 3x-1x ratio. As you get better at designing, you may learn ways to sort of cirumvent this weakness. Both Coalition and Imperial designers are really good at this.
So the stats for your gunship may turn out to have like, twenty heavy weapons, and a speed of 50 MGLT, but in exchange, protection is like 250 SBD and 100 RU.
And again, those are just some of the basics.
