But fencing and martial arts aren't the same thing. Then again, there are tonnes of different martial arts - for instance, if you learned judo, you wouldn't pick up any sword skills. Same with tae kwon doe. It would be pretty impossible to be versed in every martial art, but then I suppose you could just happen to be skilled in bushido or some such, which would make fencing easier - BUT that doesn't mean you would instantly be a master of it. They're all very different, refined fighting techniques.

Something that I rarely see taken into account but a lightsaber is very different from a sword. The mechanics of a lightsaber are much different than those of a sword being as the blade of a lightsaber has no weight. It's use is awkward being as the hilt is the only part that holds any weight.
And the argument that being a martial artist would help in fencing is like saying I'm very good at soccer therefore I'd be good at baseball because I'm an athlete... even though they're completely different.
