Can Star Destroyers 'back up'?

But at any rate, you seem to be under the impression that just because Earth's explosive weaponry and delivery systems are not up to the Empire's standards, that they will have no effect against shields. Well, your wrong right there. It would merely take more weaponry is all. And yes, in the time it would take to take out the Star Destroyer, we would lose probably the top ten cities to orbital bombardement.

Here's betting that a single Star Destroyer would take Earth apart in seconds. The main reason being that in spite of whatever firepower the world's collective nuclear arsenal might have, our delivery methods aren't fast enough to do anything before the Empire would blast the entire planet into oblivion.

Even if the missiles did manage to destroy said Star Destroyer, there would be no one left to care.

(Wow, this is a nerdy conversation)

Better question: if a Star Destroyer showed up in orbit, what would our reaction be? "Holy shit a Star Wars ship! It was real and Lucas is clearly some kind of prophet!" or "What the fuck? Star Wars is real now?"

Actually, my reaction while everyone else was doing that would be to hide in the basement.

Considering my basement's got all the gadgets, books, games, food, and drinks in it anyways, this wouldn't be quite hiding so much as 'getting bored'.

Mine would probably be along the lines of "What the fuck? Star Wars is real now?" Then I'd sit and wait for the power rangers to turn up and save us while I have a chat with Captain Janeway

If it happened I would drag out my uniform and start clearing a landing zone.

Earth's systems are too slow yes - -a Destroyer would blast them out of the sky before they impacted - or would deploy TIEs to intercept and destroy them while its guns removed the threat of every military installation on the surface.

I would become an officer and gladly aid in destroying what pitiful things earth has become.

If that happened, I'd enlist to the Imperial Navy in a sec. It'd be Jesus... And I wouldn't mind joining with picking apart Earth. After all, helping a galactic society has SO many more benefits than helping a planetary society.
