Ukian Parliament Passes Resolution Supportive of Alignment
Disaster Assistance Seen as a sort of "Admission Offering"
The first of many bulk freighters arrived today at Glee Anslem, site of a recent devastating terrorist biological warfare attack, cargoholds filled to the limit with pre-packaged food rations and other necessities. Any extra room, what little could be found, was filled with of highly sophisticated scientific instruments and some much less complicated farm tools. Considering the enormous scope of the disaster, and the unknown long term damage done to the planet, it may be the latter which proves more important. Why?
Because it is with those tools that the highly trained Agricultural Engineers from the Ukian Farming Bureau will work, assessing the damage done to Glee Anslem's ecology and its ability to provide sustenance for those who escaped the tragedy.
And the cost to Glee Anslem? Nothing.
In an act of extreme generosity, Ukian Overliege Hilter Afdol has pledged massive amounts of aid to the ravaged world, for nary a credit. To quote Mr. Afdol's speech "....[Ukio] will share our bounty with our brethren on Glee Anselm. As much food is needed, for as long as it is needed." Following a nearly unanimous resolution from the Ukian Parliament merely two days after his initial speech, Mr. Afdol watched from the observation deck of a Redoubt space station, as the first convoy set off from Ukio's orbit. In a series of brief remarks, Mr. Afdol seemed somber, "I can only hope that this offering provide some meager solace to the victims of this terrible tragedy." He referenced his own experiences with terrorism, stating, "When I was running Agro, I lost millions of credits to terrorism... but that is nothing compared to the loss of even one life on Glee Anslem. Terrorism is perhaps the greatest evil that plagues our galaxy. I hope that our offering will show the survivors that there is still some decency in this galaxy, that the capacity to do good can overcome even the greatest evil."
Despite his lofty verbiage, there is something more to Hilter's move than simple charity. The League of Nations is handling the recovery effort, and Hilter procliamed in the same speech as his original announcement that he would be putting forth a petition for Ukio's membership in that organization. Hilter confirmed to reporters that the move had been approved by the Parliament and the petition had been transmitted to Coruscant right before the launch of the aid convoy. When asked about the petition, he joked, "We haven't heard back from them yet, but we can always turn the ships around. Actually, this gift comes with no strings attached. I'll stand by my pledge, regardless of other factors. We hope to be able to be admitted to the LON as soon as possible. The organization is showing that it’s very pro-active, and I think our membership will be highly beneficial to both sides."
Several LON officials were contacted regarding the petition, but explained that it was not LON policy to comment on pending memberships. They did express gratitude for "the Ukian to our relief effort at Glee Anslem." Political analysts speculate that word on the Ukian petition could come by the end of the week, especially considering the lack of any major factors that would provide opposition to expanding membership.
