The Unauthorized Biography of Gash Jiren, Part One
From Vermillion Equinox Press
By Viryn Quell

The story of Gash Jiren's life is long and complicated, much of it lost to the annonymity of time and faulty record keeping.

He was born "Searthen Jiren" on Asthentia, an ancient world of white-haired warriors founded nearly 4000 years ago by the Old Republic. The inhabitants of the world are a species unto themselves, and before the New Republic's dissolution they were officially given recognition as such in their archives, a crossbreed of human, Zabrak, and Chiss blood, human being the dominant influence. The world is a tropical paradise, ruled by a monarchy, and relatively free from the urban development of other ancient worlds. Born into the ruling monarchy as a 'Prince-Master', Jiren was to be the next ruler of the world, upon the deaths of his parents (rule of the world is gender-inclusive, meaning that neither the males nor females of the Jiren family take precidence in inheireting rule). Though the names of his parents have never been divulged, they likely went by their ceremonial titles, 'Queen-Matron' and 'King-Master'.

While Jiren was in his early teens (presumably thirteen or fourteen), his father died during mysterious circumstances, purportedly a tragic boating accident. Following this period, Joruck Denti, a Duke of Asthentia, moved in to take the reigns of power, particularly exploiting Queen-Matron Jiren's grief for his own benefit. As the young Jiren grew older, he began to study medicine, eventually earning his doctorate degree. As he neared his twenties, it became infinitely apparent to Joruck that he was too strong to be controlled as his mother had been. He contacted rebel forces in the area -- breaking Asthentia's nearly 1000-year isolation -- and informed them of the boy's Force sensitivity, painting him as a Dark Jedi of some sort.

At the time, however, Jiren did not even know of his Force-sensitivity. However, as Asthentia was founded by the Old Republic, many Jedi were involved in its colonization, and as time had gone by, they'd become part of the ruling class of the world. Over thousands of years, those Jedi evolved into the modern-day monarchy of Asthentia, and as a result, almost all of the Jiren family was unknowingly Force sensitive, as was a percentage of the population much greater than the galactic average. In fact, a good number of those whose Force abilities cannot qualify under "sensitivity" have very minor attunement to the Force, resulting in very basic instincts and other minor feats.

The rebel forces -- at the time, quite phobic of Dark Jedi, for obvious reasons -- stormed the world. However, the group was not a registered part of the Rebel Alliance, and acted outside of the typically humanitarian initiatives of that rebellion, being more extremists than political reformists. The entire capital city was razed, and Searthen Jiren nearly killed. In this battle, he received his first of three facial scars, across his left cheek. He sought out Joruck Denti, who told Jiren of his Force-sensitivity, boasting of his victory. Though reports are sketchy, some claim that Denti was responsible for the death of Jiren's father.

He fled the world, very much embittered towards Denti and the rebellion in general. During this time, he roamed the galaxy, delving deeply into his newfound Force abilities -- and more specifically, into the Dark Side. He sought out the Jedi, desiring to exact vengeance upon them, building a red-bladed lightsaber with which to do so. Around this time, the emperor fell as Endor, and the Jedi rose once again, providing the young Dark Jedi with numerous targets. Coinciding with this rise was the rise of the Sith, under men like Recon Klain and his Eternal Sith Order.

From one of his Jedi victims, Jiren received his second facial scar, cutting from above his left eye to below his right cheek. He found a bacta specialist to have the deformations repaired, but discovered in a routine preliminary blood test that he was allergic to bacta. This same Jedi bore a Holocron detailing the mysteries of the Sith. It was during this period that Searthen began to seek out these mythical Dark Siders, stealing the fallen Jedi's lightsaber and learning to fight with two of the weapons. He also adopted the name, "Gash".

Spiraling downwards from grief, anger, and increasing power in the darkside, Gash had developed selective amnesia towards his past; he now remembered almost nothing of his homeworld, his origins, or even his true identity. He fully immersed himself in the persona of "Gash Jiren", the embittered, scarred, hooded traveller. Many times throughout his life, this pattern would emerge; he would spin his own legend, and live within that cocoon of safety.

Finally, he sought out Recon Klain's Eternal Sith Order (ERO), wishing to learn more and develop his latent talents under the great masters of that order. He did so, training under the Sith Master Skye Keller, a strong but strangely-compassionate Sith. About halfway through his training, he ran out on his Master, learning of a doctor stationed on Naboo specializing in a new form of bacta-ryll healing alternative, called "ryllca". Desiring a way to heal himself despite his allergy, he held the doctor hostage and stole a good portion of his stock -- in the process being shot in the face by a blaster, nearly dodging it but being skinned by the blaster, this receiving his third and final scar. He was also badly wounded during his raid on the doctor's camp, and forced the man to perform surgery on him, replacing his arm with a prosthetic.

Given the final choice, though, Jiren decided to keep the scars as a reminder to himself of what he'd done, and failed to do. That, anyway, was the rationalization found in his journals at the time; many psychological experts, having analyzed the Jedi Master's life, maintain that he did so if only to perpetuate now-growing myths about himself. Many of the less-talented students of ERO had begun to spin magnificent tales about the Sith. Gash disappeared for a few months, resurfacing months later with hardened resolve, quickly receiving his promotion to Sith Knight.

During Jiren's brief hiatus, one change had occured; Recon Klain, founder of the rapidly-expanding and galactically dominant ERO, had abandoned his own order, gone "rogue". It was at this time that Gash began searching throughout the galaxy for the man he'd long admired and held as an example of Sith might above all others, eventually locating him on Korriban (though nearly dying during a treacherous flight through a small cluster of black holes in the process). He found the Rogue Sith Master already expecting him on a Sith temple. The two immediately saw within one another some sort of fellowship -- some unknown connection. Side by side, the two journeyed to Ziost, the ancient ice world of the Sith. Together, they tamed one of the temples of the world, Gash using his technological abilities to begin the creation of an army of battledroids similar to those used by the Trade Federation; these later became known as Cobra Battledroids.

The two fought side by side on Ziost, finding at first a new enemy and, once he'd been defeated, a new companion in the Sith Warrior Qual Zaiso. However, in Gash's eyes, Qual was a rival. He perceived the man as a threat to the approval he received from Recon Klain, and did not take kindly to that. Their rivalry was kept in check only by Recon, however, who made it clear that any infighting would not be tolerated.

Following this, many of Recon's old students from ERO began to join the new Sith Order they'd established on Ziost; initially, it bore no name, but gradually took on the moniker "The Ziost Empire". During this time, ERO fell from prominence, while the New Order rose to power along with its rival, the New Republic. Xylon Hexyra, also known as "Hexadragon", left the Eternal Rogue Order and joined forces with the New Republic as a Rogue Jedi. Though Gash had barely known Xylon, this event would later become quite significant.

The Ziost empire (TZE) then carried out what still lives today as one of the most brutally effective paramilitary attacks in history; the assault on Theed. It also lives on as testament to the crimes of Gash Jiren, which, in the eyes of many -- perhaps even Gash himself -- he has not even begun to make up for. Initially planned as an attack on the Jedi capital of Otah Gunga, Recon and Gash changed their plans in the midst of the assault, making room for a target opportunity they knew would both humiliate the Jedi and draw them out; unprotected Theed.

They struck quickly, killing hundreds of citizens, battling and wounding -- even killing -- Jedi. They fled, but not before planting an explosive device in the primary civic building of Theed. A problem with the detonator led to Qual Zaiso volunteering to stay behind and detonate it manually -- in essence, commiting suicide. Their final act of terror was for Gash himself to strafe the city in his modified CloakShape fighter, lighting fires that would burn for hours, as he broadcasted the words, "Theed, you are an example of the Jedi's weakness. Where are they now? Protecting you? No. Do you see what happens when your defenders are inadequate as these jedi?"

This daring and successful assault solidified Gash as a galactic figure -- famous or infamous, villain or hero, this tremendous act of war would always be remembered. In a twist of fate, however, it would be this attack, which catapulted him to galactic infamy as a Sith, which would set in motion events which would lead him down a path towards the Jedi. For from this attack, he took with him a small souveneir -- a holocron.

The Unauthorized Biography of Gash Jiren, Part Two
From Vermillion Equinox Press
By Viryn Quell

The Holocron is a tool of record keeping employed by Jedi. During the days of the Old Republic, they were much more prominent -- however, because of the mysterious forces surrounding them, most can last many millenia, and so they are still in use today.

However, the Holocron in question was, in fact, not a Holocron at all, but a ruse designed by Joruck Denti to lure Jiren to the planet. Communicating with him through the device, Joruck informed Jiren of his history and heritage, providing him with the location of the isolated and forgotten Asthentia.

Bringing with him several close friends, including the Dark Lord Maim (who would later rise to become Dark Lord of the Sith), Maim's wife, Athena, and Recon Klain, Jiren journeyed to this world, only to find that, once he'd disembarked from the Marauder-Class Corvette, the thing took off again -- taking his friends with it. (It was later discovered to be the work of Joruck Denti who had, using his Force abilities, taken control of the pilot of the ship.)

Upon taking a few steps into the forest, Jiren made the acquaintance of a young man who'd tried to attack him with a crossbow (the typical weapon of the world which, in the absence of the Republic or the Jedi, had regressed in its ways and reverted to the use of certain primitive instruments, and developed a lack of knowledge regarding the Force, resulting in a distinct phobia). His name was Garric Jiren, a fellow member of the royal family and Gash's nephew, and he immediately recognized the lost Prince-Master of Asthentia.

Bringing Jiren before his mother, Queen-Matron Jiren, there was something of a joyous reunion. Joruck Denti was also in attendance, though he was initially treated with respect by Jiren, according to several reports. Denti seemed genuinely interested in Jiren's tales of travel and adventure, and, over a feast, Gash was more than happy to share, having lacked a family for the entirety of the part of his life he could remember, was delighted to have one. Denti then requested that Jiren come to visit the remarkable Phostosil mine, pride of Asthentia.

Asthentia was so named because it possessed several key, unique minerals that, when refined, could be synthesized to create Asthent, an extremely potent fuel that had once been prized on the Old Republic market, and which at that point provided all of Asthentia with power. The most potent and unique of these minerals was Phostosil, a derivative of phosphorus, which, like its originator, combusted in oxygen.

Garric, eager to impress the elder Jiren, urged Gash to accept, and so he did. Once in the mine (which was deep enough underground that no air reached it under normal circumstances), Joruck Denti set off a number of explosives which broke the artificial seal on the mine, causing a catastrophic explosion. Escaping only using the Force, and saving Garric with him, Jiren returned to the Asthentian palace, demanding that his uncle be exiled. Denti did the work for them, fleeing at the sight of the survived Jiren.

Before Jiren left, he met one more key person; Rakilik, a mysterious sooth-sayer and prophet who was immensely respected by the royal family. Dressed in strange rags, he spoke to Jiren of the "good buried in his soul". Immensely disturbed by this, the Sith left Asthentia, and was joined by Garric.

But thoughts of Rakilik's words haunted him, and dreams that seemed all too real filled his sleep, screaming to him of the good inside of him, of his noble heart. Eventually, Jiren, no longer being able to take the dreams, fled from Ziost in the middle of the night, taking Garric -- who's innocent nature had left him at odds with life on the dark world -- with him.

He renamed his Marauder-Class Corvette Hephaestus to Hermes, alternating between god-figures in ancient human history. It is well known that Jiren's immense intelligence led him to indulge in scholarly activities throughout his life, and he'd studied ancient human literature on Ziost, in addition to Sith sorcery.

Fleeing through the galaxy, Jiren found himself at odds with planetary authorities that sought him as a criminal. He spent most of his time in Imperial territory where, though he was technically still recognized as a criminal, Imperial authorities did not care to hunt him, as he was a known enemy of the Jedi and the Republic. He wished to seek out the Jedi, but knew that authorities would attack him the moment his craft entered Jedi or Republic space. It was during this time that "Rakilik" revealed his true self to him; he was Rakili, a member of the nameless species to which Yoda and Yaddle belonged, and a member of the old Jedi Order, who had gone to Asthentia to watch over the Force-sensitive royal family.

One of the members of the new Jedi Order, known as Danster, knew of Jiren's flight from Ziost and thought him to be a danger. When Jiren's vessel and compliment of starfighters attacked a rogue Imperial craft to prevent it from assaulting an independant trader vessel, Danster grasped the opportunity, and stepped in with a squadron to capture Jiren. Surrendering for fear of injuring any of the Jedi forces, Jiren was captured and taken to Naboo, the planet he'd so horrifically marred.

Jiren was put on trial in front of all the Jedi. He expressed his desire to learn their ways, and spoke of his loss of any chance to learn a path other than the dark one. Many of the Jedi, still nursing injuries real and mental from the assault on Theed that he'd played such a pivotal role in, would not trust him. Among these was Amalia Azalin. Danster himself, it is reported, said little during the proceedings, but seemed to favour a harsh punishment for the former Sith. Organa Solo, however, having experienced the turn of a Sith herself (namely her father, Darth Vader), spoke of letting Jiren show them his willingness to become one of them. Eventually, at the empassioned suggestion of Garric Jiren, the elder Jiren was released to become one of the Jedi, provided he attoned for his crimes.

Many of the Jedi were not satisfied with this ruling. Among them was Nomi Sunrider. Though she was not aware of it, light-years away, a 'perfect Sith', genetically designed by Gash Jiren as one of his final acts as a Sith, was awaking, created with a combination of her DNA, and that of Gash, Qual Zaiso, Recon Klain. Predominantly however, he was made from Gash, and looked exactly like him -- not to mention that he was imbued with all of Jiren's memories. This project was known as the XIREON project, and its product chose to call itself Xireon Jiren.

Gash -- or as he now chose to be called, Searthen -- Jiren, for the first time in his life, was a free man. Learning the arts of the Jedi from his fellows, and working for a time in the Naboo Botanical Institute, he lived a peaceful life for several years. Rakili, the Jedi Master who had led him to the Light, was immensely pleased, and treated his protege as a son, for a time.

But Jiren became restless. He recalled the defeat of the Jedi at Naboo at his hand, and witnessed the expansion of the Empire. He made a friendship with Xylon Hexyra (once known as Hexadragon), who was also a former Sith, and a Rogue Jedi. Hexyra was the New Republic Supreme Military Chancellor. Yet the Republic seemed helpless to stop the enslaught of the Empire, not to mention the Sith.

Over time, a change came about in Jiren. The new Jedi who had once been so full of life, eager to see and do things from a new perspective, became darker and frustrated. Once again, he adopted the moniker of Gash Jiren. As we have seen throughout his life, this has been a pattern; he began to once again wrap himself in the protective blanket of his alternate persona. Gash Jiren, the hooded Jedi. The outcast.

Jiren had found that he could never truly be one of the Jedi. Having seen far too many dark things in his life, he was haunted by his past and its implications for the future; he saw darkness at every turn, and feared its return. No matter where he went, or where he ran, there would always be a dark shadow on his soul that he could not shake.

One day, in a fit of frustration, Jiren called a meeting of the Jedi, and announced that he was suceeding from them, and forming the Rogue Jedi Order -- perhaps inspired by Xylon Hexyra's own status as a Rogue Jedi. Many of the young students and brash Jedi Knights followed him; in his years as a Jedi, Gash had attracted something of a following. His immense power, coupled with his knowledge of the Dark Side, meant that many Jedi who had never fought the Sith went to him for advice on combatting them. The image of "Gash Jiren" was as romantic to these students as it was to himself; the dark, hooded Gash Jiren, haunted by his past, and with knowledge of the Dark Side enough to fight it. He fled to Yavin IV.

Now, having abandoned his life of peace for one of battle once again, he laid down the rules for the Rogue Jedi Order. The old laws on love and emotion were to be abandoned; compassion and positive feelings of love for one's fellows were to be encouraged, not dissuaded. Xylon Hexyra, impressed by this move, joined the Rogue Jedi Order -- and perhaps to reciprocrate, Jiren joined the New Republic. Learning the trade of Admiralty from Hexyra, and with the assistance and insight of the Force, Jiren quickly became recognized as a tactical genius and was made a High Admiral.

During this time, there were several important battles that Jiren took part in, including the assault on Muunilist masterminded by himself and Hexyra, which crippled and nearly destroyed the Empire's fledgling Eclipse Star Destroyer. He helped to repel two large Imperial attacks with efficiency and ease, earning him a reputation which had now fully reversed his old; he was a respected and adored Admiral and Jedi, someone who stood up for his beliefs.

The Rogue Jedi Order expanded into the Corporate Sector, and took Ossus as its capital. With the help of the Asthentian species known as the "Krick", a daring expedition into the Unknown Regions was spearheaded by Gash Jiren. Csilla, the capital of the Chiss Empire, was discovered in an ice age, and Jiren negotiated a treaty with the Chiss. Csilla was thawed from its ice age using great machines designed by Jiren himself. The Chiss were revealed to him as one of the founding species of Asthentia, and thus a part of Jiren's bloodline.

Jiren had now risen immensely in prominence. However, his forrays into Chiss territory were not without consequence -- nor was the XIREON project. The two found each other, and Xireon Jiren, using the Blade of Klain -- which Gash had, somewhat foolishly, left on Ziost -- ressurected the great Grand Admiral Thrawn.

The Admiral launched a full scale invasion of Ossus, using the Chiss dissident group known as the Chiss Imperium. This group not only opposed the Republic presence in their territory, but all interference in the Unknown Regions. Under his direction, Xireon, with the assistance of Admiral Galak Fyyar and the Sith Darth Talus and Velil X'Cannoth, designed perfect, Force-imbued soldiers; the Achrions.

It was only with his association with the Dark Lord Maim, his old friend and Dark Lord of the Sith, that anyone on Ossus survived. The Dark Prophets of Maim discovered the rising force of darkness, and Maim reported it to his old friend, despite their obvious differences.

Gash Jiren led a daring battle against the overwhealming forces of Thrawn, with the unexpected assistance of the Empire, who had discovered the return of the Admiral themselves. But the invincible army of Thrawn made any victory impossible. In the Battle of Ossus, Gash, armed with the Blade of Klain (which Xireon had stupidly delivered to him by way of intimidation), had slain thousands of Chiss soldiers, losing control to its sweet melody of destruction.

He barely escaped with a few thousand residents of Ossus. The rest were killed or enslaved by Thrawn. In the political power vaccuum left while Jiren fled, Jereck Musaile cited Jiren's association with the Dark Lord of the Sith and his failure to save Ossus as an inability to lead, and seized power in the Rogue Jedi Order, and becoming the New Republic Minister of the Military overnight.

Thrawn's invasion continued, reaching across the galaxy, into the Corporate Sector, and Republic and Imperial Space. With the power of the Achrions, there was no victory to be had by the Republic.

Next, Jereck Musaile led Gash's friend, Xylon Hexyra, into a trap at Corellia with false intelligence. Hexyra was killed, thought he heroically took an enormous amount of the Chiss Imperium force with him. The New Republic, now led by Jereck Musaile, declared Gash a dangerous war criminal and hunted him, as Jiren formed a rebel force to combat Thrawn’s invaders and, if necessary, the Republic. Musaile was a puppet of Thrawn, bribed into submission, ambitious enough to accept the money and power.

During this time, Xireon Jiren and Darth Talus seized control of Thrawn's army, using the loyalty of the Achrions to them to control the direction of the invasion. Gash Jiren's rebels continued to fight Thrawn at every turn, thought they were but a small force. Then, during one pivotal fight, the battered freighter of Kyle Katarn appeared.

Katarn revealed to Jiren just what was occuring, including the origin of the Achrions. It had been believed, since the discovery of the Force-imbued soldiers, that they were being constructed at Ossus. In fact, it seemed, they were being generated at the Valley of the Jedi's location -- Ruusan.

However, the First Achrion, Xex Tiron, angry that Xireon had taken control of Thrawn's forces, sought out the Blade of Klain. The sword had gained a degree of sentience through the powerful forces it had come in contact with and Gash, sensing this, secreted it away to a sect of Aing-Tii monks to keep it safe. Tirion hunted down the monks and slaughtered them, taking the Blade for his own.

The war came to a head at Ruusan, where the Forces of the Republic, the Empire, and the Chiss Imperium met at last in a final showdown. Gash Jiren, finding that the Empire had become more of an ally than the Republic, had informed the Empire of the location of the Achrion construction facility. Firel Nekkelon, a Sullustan, and one of the few New Republoc officials who remained uncorrupted by Musaile, was contacted by Gash as well.

During the battle, Kasien Treseda, a member of New Republic Intelligence and an ally of Nekkelon, murdered Musaile. Gash fought his way through hundreds of Achrions, nearly dying in the process, to the core of the Valley of the Jedi, where the Achrions were being made. Using the Valley's immense power, he pulled the Tachyon, an Executor-Class Super Star Destroyer captured by Thrawn and filled with Achrions, down from orbit, crashing it into the Valley and burying it, ending the battle around it in a catastrophic explosion.

The Republic was returned to its proper leadership shortly thereafter, and the temporary armistice between the Republic and Empire ended. Jiren, however, was nowhere to be found. For months, he was reported as missing. In truth, he'd escaped with Kasien Treseda in a damaged shuttle, jumping to a planet named Enyon, where they'd both been captured.

Fleeing Enyon, Gash Jiren returned to the Rogue Jedi Order. He was elected Supreme Military Chancellor of the Republic in the absence of Xylon Hexyra.

However, at this point, the Empire had expanded to a point beyond which there was no return. Coruscant, which had always been Gash's base of operations as the New Republic Military Chancellor, was taken. The Empire continued to expand for another year, exponentially spreading its influence. Several key battles, including those at Etti IV (which Jiren commanded) and Wayland, marked low points for the Empire during this period of expansion, but it continued unabated.

The Republic fell back to Corellia, re-enforcing the system with their remaining forces and preparing for the inevitable assault by the Empire. Before it could come, however, Tilaric Brel of Imperial Intelligence released the Falleen-designed Wrath Virus on Coruscant. It spread through the Empire like wildfire, killing billions, plus unrecorded (but presumably catastrophic) casualties at Csilla.

Brel seperated from the Empire, blackmailing hundreds of systems and captains into joining him with the antidote for the virus. His so called "New Empire" presented a grave threat to the galaxy. Jiren considered the Empire a lesser evil than Brel.

And so Gash Jiren, in what became his final act as New Republic Supreme Military Chancellor, ordered all Republic forces to Bastion, Brel's new capital. This could have resulted in an Imperial invasion of Corellia, but instead, Regent Hyfe and Grand Marshall Simon Kaine ordered their forces to Bastion as well, cooperating with Jiren once again to destroy Brel. Vice-Admiral Vikar commanded the Imperial forces, and while he and Jiren fought a brave battle, it was only the betrayal of Tilaric Brel's eight Falleen allies that brought about his end.

Gash Jiren returned to Ossus as the Republic fell, dissolved in a flurry of word battle and politics. He now rules the Ossan Parliament and the Rogue Jedi Order, and since has fought a number of important battles, including a small war to save Veresh from the Yuuzhan Vong, and a battle to put down the Angel Virus on Yaga Minor. He has changed his appearance, slightly, finally having his scars healed with Ryll treatment, cutting his hair shorter, and frequently being seen wearing green contacts to hide his glowing red eyes. But he has not lost the trademark darkness, the hooded cloak and almost-fearsome severity and haunted look, that he has always had as Gash Jiren.

I think that it can be said that, on the whole, Gash Jiren's presence has done the galaxy a great deal of good. Excusing the first of half of his life, he has make enormous strides for peace (many of them albeit having failed in the face of the Empire's might).

However, I would make one, final, closing observation on the tale of this great man's life. Notice, at the beginning of his life, how little he did of consequence; he was innocent, pure. Seathen Jiren. Later, he embraced the Sith, and did great, if terrible, things -- as Gash Jiren. For a short period of time, he became a 'pure' Jedi, embracing life as Searthen Jiren. Yet he did nothing of consequence during this time, and only became frustrated. When at last he became a Rogue Jedi and returned to his dark, hooded persona as Gash Jiren, he truly emerged as a galactic figure and hero, in every sense of the word.

Truly, this is a comment on the duality of being. It has been in the same identity that he did the greatest ill, and the greatest good of his life, as the dark, scarred, hooded Gash Jiren.

Perhaps, in a way, Gash is a metaphor for us all. Those who are capable of the greatest good, are also capable of the greatest evil. Something to think on, I believe.

OOC: I feel, having had your Viryn character write this, has comprimised his own seperate being. I realize he's your character and that you can make him do anything you see fit. Its just that the Viryn Ive seen wouldnt portray anyone in such a good light, even as a hero. Thats my two cents...

OOC: Great work Gash, amazing.

Not only did it explain the sometimes-obscur history of Gash Jiren, but also contained a history of the galaxy interwoven.

I agree with Gue. And I hate Maim. *pees on Maim*
