Hello and welcome, ladies and gentlebeings - this is GNN.
In a momentous decision released today, the New Galactic Coalition's Finance Minister has signed a deal with Stellar Enterprises to sell decommissioned warships and government scrap to the new company. The move comes well into a war between the Coalition and the Black Dragon Empire, causing some to speculate the Coalition is expecting a spike in scrap, spoils of war, or new military technology that will make older designs obsolete. Whatever the reason, the notoriously cash-strapped Coalition seems to be aiming to recover some of the costs of their recent engagements.
The move was especially surprising to financial experts and market watchers, who expected the contract to go to Brandt Enterprises. This could be a sign of the Coalition seeking to expand its' number of business partners as well as their reputation as a place to do business in - the contract itself is expected to be quite lucrative for Stellar Enterprises. No word yet on what Stellar Enterprises intends to do with the decommissioned and scrap material. Common trends in that line of business include refitting and reselling, junk-trading, and experimental use.
The Coalition's Finance Minister was quoted on the new deal earlier today:
"It gives me great pleasure to announce a new deal between the government of the New Galactic Coalition and Stellar Enterprises. Decomissioned warships, retired models, and salvage will be offered to Stellar at affordable prices, once they've been properly cleared of military information, identification, and other little trade secrets.
"It is our hope that this will become a useful form of recycling, turning the waste of war and the ravages of time back into something useful, and encouraging innovation in the companies that choose to work and live in the Coalition. Once the sales are finalized, Stellar Enterprises will be free to do with the salvage as they see fit, but we have been reassured they will be used for practical and productive purposes. Any questions?"
One man near the back rose, datapad in hand. "Yes, Minister Flagrant. Tell us, why Stellar Enterprises?"
"Good question. We decided it was important to stimulate business throughout the Coalition, not just through the same old avenues, and it's these sorts of alternative solutions that Stellar Enterprises seemed most adept to take care of. They're an enthusiastic bunch, and we look forward to working more with them in the future. Yes, in the front row?"
"Alyssa Shack, GNN. Minister, does this show any form of 'cooling off' from the Coalition's other normal business partners, like Brandt?"
"No, no, not at all. We simply feel that at this time, it's important to spread out our options, get as many people involved as we can. Brandt's people have been doing great work in the Coalition, we're just trying to include a new player into the bunch. When Stellar Enterprises approached us with their proposal, we were sure they were the sort we wanted working in the Coalition. Yes, you there in red."
"When you say they approached you with the proposal, does that mean this was Stellar Enterprises' idea?"
"Why yes, originally, it was. They first came asking around for a source of scrap, the idea bounced around, it grew a little, and now we have the deal here today. It's that sort of initiative we respect. I'm afraid I haven't got time for many more questions, so one more from the gentleman in the front."
"Can you tell us much about what's being sold?"
"Well, a few old warships, especially those that have fallen into disrepair or degredation - a victory class star destroy and a few mothballed Mon Calamari cruisers are among the first set of salvage. There's also a great deal of scrap from engagements at Teth, Tynna, and Bimmisari that come from a wide range of ships, some not even our own. The MC-10s have been replaced in the fleet lineup, so some of those are also for sale."
"Isn't it dangerous selling old military technology? The MC-10 was a highly guarded design in its' day, and some of the scrap recovered from engagements with the Empire and the Black Dragons could reveal more for military purposes."
"I assure you, anything we could have gleaned from the scrap we already have. It's all being carefully catalogued and recorded before sale. I really can't take any more questions, but thank you for coming today."
