Roleplaying can be with others if you wish and depending if the story you create is of interest to them.
I guess we are more of a writing board than actual game but we do all follow the guidelines and all of our roleplays/stories revolve around the TRF Universe.
Go ahead and just pick some stories out of the Battlegrounds and read them. Some will be interesting, some won't but it should give you an idea of how we do things.
How to start writing?
Well, you just start... heh. Think of a fancy badass title for your story, hit the create new thread button and write as much or as little as you want for a first post and so on...
The ship database is under construction. Any ship that is seen in the SW canon may be used. Some factions create their own ships via the Research and Development Forum but consider that Advanced Roleplaying.
