“Captain, eight minutes,” an enlisted, relatively young and assigned his overall boring task for this very reason, called out to Captain Purple. The almost equally young, but by no means inexperienced captain replied happily, with a smile and a nod in the other’s direction. This brought the same back, before the pair broke eye contact and continued on with their duties.
For the younger one, it was simply monitoring a countdown.
For the older, fine-tuning a planetary attack.
“You’ve got to stop treating them so nice, Bob,” Lieutenant Commander Bluebook stated, glaring sideways at the on-looking crewman before turning his eyes back to the holographic display that several of the high-ranking officers on the ship were standing around. Displayed before them was a large representation of a planet, with shipyards and ships flying this way and that around it.
After a minute of watching in silence, Bluebook spoke up.
“So you think this is going to work?” His tone was sceptical, as he as well as everyone else present was aware of the risk being taken.
“It’ll work,” Purple said, his features contorted into concentration as the simulation in front of him showed a large number of ships jumping out of hyperspace and heading in the direction of the planet.
“Are you sure of that?”
“I’m sure.” Purple looked up, offering a roguishly young smile to his friend, as if to dismiss the matter. Bluebook either didn’t get the hint, or didn’t want to.
“Sure enough to risk the lives of all the men on this ship?” He looked meaningfully over at the young crewman, who was still watching the counter, reading six minutes. “Because that’s what it’ll boil down to, you know. If Phase Four fails, then we’ll be out there on the front lines, fighting on our own! Against the projected odds, do you really want to risk that?”
Purple looked up, and glared into his old friend’s eyes.
“You know that that isn’t my decision to make.”

“Phase One initiated, Admiral,” a helpful yet annoying man of unidentified rank stated briefly, receiving only a grunt in recognition, and left. Tulok watched him go, annoyed by the fact that his Admiral had such an unchanging position on the matter of common courtesy. The captain had been serving under Admiral Osiaric for over two years now, and the other man’s ideas hadn’t changed one bit since, reputedly, before Tulok’s arrival.
“Captain Purple’s task force should be entering hyperspace now, Admiral,” Lieutenant Lithium spoke up after a few moments of silence. This time Osiaric afforded him more than his normal grunt, but a chuckle. The pair had grown on each other over time, Tulok noted. He didn’t know why, or how, but it seemed that the Admiral respected the much younger Lieutenant. For whatever reason, it was none of Tulok’s business.
“Phase Two initiated...” The Admiral commented, almost to himself. “And what kind of a name is ‘Purple’, anyway?” He asked the question suddenly, completely out of the blue. Tulok was inclined to agree with the Admiral’s mocking tone, himself equally sharing a wonderment at the man’s surname. Lithium began a search for the answer to the rhetorical question immediately. A moment later, he placed a datapad in front of Osiaric.
“No idea about the origin of the name, but it seems that he was related to Commander Red, of the Fury Fire.”
“Well good for him... now go get me a drink.”
***
A large mass of ships floated in space, seemingly unaware of each other. Their running lights were off, and all signs showed them to be dead in space.
In a second, they vanished.

“Phase Three commencing!”
“Prepare to exit hyperspace! All hands, battle stations!”
The mass of Sentinel Third’s First Destroyer Legion lurched out of hyperspace, very far in system and close enough to the target planet that all aboard the Pandemonium’s bridge could see exactly what they were aiming for. Circling the planet were a handful of shipyards, and a slightly greater number of defence ships. There was nothing else, aside from the lacking civilian traffic. Being a Rogue Imperial planet well within Imperial boarders didn’t fare very well for trade, and the people of this world had always known that the day would come when the Empire came to set them free.
On the other side of the planet, Captain Purple’s task force exited hyperspace, and began powering up weapons and shields, acquiring targeting solutions on shipyards and enemy craft. Abolishers were activated. Osiaric’s command did the same, and the ships began lurching forward. All communications leading out of the system had been jammed. The planet had no shield, so this was not an option in their defence. The trap had been laid, now to spring it.
Ahead, lay the former glory of the Empire, Yaga Minor. This day, it would once again see Imperial control.
