Chapter One

Kamino

So his diplomats landed, his diplomats were welcomed, and his diplomats spoke:

"Hi"

And thus, did the Karibo Governor respond:

"Hi"

The Diplomats followed up with:

"How are you?"

And the Governor replied:

"Just fine"

So the negotiations began well.

There were no banner ticket parades as the world was as much a waterworld as Mon Calamari. But where Mon Calamari had some land-masses, Kamino had none. It was supposed by everyone that the two worlds held that to be somewhat of a rather strong common ground to start an unbreakable relationship and amid the flurry of excitement and hope, Prentiss Blood had arrived on the galactic scene.

A new place, a new life, a new hope.

The wisp of salt in the air as he hurried from the transport to the entrance out of the billowing rains gave Prentiss the impression that a person could start with a clean slate here. Seeing the water run down the smooth wall of buildings stirred longings that he could wash away the sins of the past; even those that stuck to a person like the dirtiest of sludge grease. Inside the great entrance hall was warm and as his clothes dried he took in the sights in wonderment. This was, by far, the cleanest place he had ever visited.

With a professional's eye, he saw that there would be ample opportunity not only to learn new methods and skills but a chance to practice those he'd been developing.

He was but a small drop in the bucket with regards Humans who'd emmigrated to this planet of one billion. Even so, however, despite the excitement the arrival of the representatives of the Mon Calamari Republic had caused, space was becoming an ever increasing, if subtle, worry for the natives.

There was only so much room their surface cities could boast of and the construction of additional spires from the ocean floor reaching to the surface took time.

But such was not the concern of Prentiss. He came with a calling and soon a long slender Kaminoan had walked up to welcome him. As it turned out, he was expected.

"Doctor?"

Prentiss gave the alien his best smile by way of answer since it still hurt to talk despite the scars on his neck having healed and motioned for the welcome committee to show him the way.

Literally and figuratively.

The Kaminos would join The noble Mon Calamari Republic, and get all the rights, protections, and privaledges provided, so long as they aide the Mon Calamari in times of war, provide economical support, etc.

"Scalpel," whispered Prentiss as he probed the delicate skin of his patient with his gloved fingers.

As the instrument was handed to him the conversation in the operating room continued.

"It's settled," started the tall Kamino, Ranu Ru, who had been observing the procedure. "We would get all the rights, protections and privileges of those in the Mon Calamari Republic.."

"So we are going to see a greater influx of Republicans in the city's halls, yes?" came Haley, the surgeon's aide as she swabbed the blood that flowed from the incision Pentriss had made.

Ranu Ru, whose expression seemed to be carved in stone, replied in a polite tone, "Of course."

"Where are we going to put them?" Haley shot back, using a clamp to hold back the flesh.

Unhindered, Ranu Ru, answered, "Why the Rooming Association will no doubt find.."

"Where?" Haley persisted but Pentriss called her to task.

"This is a delicate cut to make, please focus here." his whisper seemed to get their undivided attention.

As the doctor folded back the cut flesh, he turned to Ranu Ru, "Here is the gland where it started."

The Kaminoan moved closer using a visor that allowed for extreme magnification.

"Haley, take a scrapping sample so Ranu can run his tests. Then we will seal the cut back and close her up."

"Doctor, you have no idea how much this means to me.." Ranu had started and Prentiss shut out the praises and comments on how Kaminoan hands were too large and bulbous to be used for such delicate work.

Prentiss just looked at the unconcious Kamino lying on the table wondering, not for the first time, if Ranu Ru's approach could be considered actually 'tackling the problem'.

It was an ailment that struck a minority of Kamino females damaging their reproductive organs. But what Ranu Ru was proposing was the cloning of healthy glands to perhaps be transplanted into the ailing females.

A reaction to the effect of the illness and given the Kaminoan's excelling science of cloning technology techniques, perhaps even a good idea. But to Prentiss, it was the attention given to this idea and this idea alone that was eclipsing the search for the reason the ailment struck to begin with.

To force a solution to a problem rather than tackling the causes could force the ailment to adapt as well. And if experience was any teacher, it would not be an adaptation they would like.

It was an approach the Kaminoans seemed to employ in everything from everyday life to politics. In their negotiations with the Calamari Republic, they had come to near blows over their differing lifestyles in aquatic environments and even though ultimately the negotiations succeeded, he wondered if the representatives from the MCR acknowledged the underlying drawbacks and difficulties inherent with the realities of life on Kamino before the placing the conditions of wartime aid and economic support in their laps.

The Kaminoans had only so much to work with even with the infrastructure put in by Chaddwick Fearsons of the Jutraalian Empire and while they held contracts with outersystems, the kind of economical support the Calamari Republic would need seemed to far outweigh what Kamino could give.

But that was the past. An agreement was made and the Mon Calamari Republic were here as their starships entered the system and Prentiss shrugged off his concerns. What did he know anyway for he was just a doctor?

The operating crew had left and once he was satisfied with the patient's status, he pulled off his gloves and began to wash his hands. The warm water was relaxing.

Just then, a shudder seemed to rock the entire structure and Prentiss had a quick vision of hungry fish snapping their jaws together in the oceans underneath him.

He was wondering what had happened when someone burst into the doorway nearly out of breath, "The government building has been bombed!"

What the hell!?

He was beginning to gather a crew together to respond to the crisis when he was blocked by Calamari soldier. "I am sorry doctor, but we cannot allow you to leave."

"Who the bloody hell are you?" Prentiss shouted ignoring the pain in his throat that flared.

"Sir, we are providing air-medical lifts here. There is rioting in the halls and causeways and an uprising is occurring. Shock Troops are entering the City to ensure stability!"

Prentiss did not really care what job the Mon Calamari was sent to do. But he focussed on the words that affected him.

"The wounded are coming here?!" he demanded. If the fish-eyed creature before him wavered, shocktrooper or not, he would not be in Prentiss' way for much longer.

"On my honor, Sir! They are coming!" Prentiss gave a begrudging nod to the trooper.

"I won't keep you then," he whispered and motioned Haley over who was carrying several portable units.

"We're staying!" he shouted as sirens began to wail as alarms went off warning of the riot dangers. "Have the staff prep the wings for emergency surgeries."

"Which doctors should I recall?" she shouted back and Prentiss looked back to the Calamari ShockTrooper noting it's hard, white armour and brutal weaponry.

"Those with wartime experience!" he answered with a snarl.

It's happening again!

Chapter Two

Kamino

"Open your eyes!" came the call as the hands covering Prentiss' eyes moved away. Doctor Prentiss Blood looked at his new office and a grin came to his face. His various accolades and certifications were neatly displayed on a singular wall while, behind a spartan desk, was a panoramic view of the Kamino seascape.

He even did not mind that it was raining. A most common daily occurance that he got used too over time.

His staff, Haley, his aide, Ranu Ru, a Kamino Observer who learned from Prentiss and now held a certification of his own and Boxer, an anesthesiologist worth his weight in gold credits grinned like ewoks with a golden droid.

The construction was over and Prentiss marveled at not only how quickly the Calamari built New Reef Town but how damn good it looked. Especially his offices.

His contributions during the Uprisings when MCR first came came to the notice of the MCR Representatives and they approached him with centralizing his practice with other fellow medical professionals.

That business with the rebel clones stealing children and capturing the city a year before had impressed upon the leadership that resources needed to be centralized and organized and Prentiss wholeheartedly agreed. The way the clones took over and the speed with which they did it never sat well with the good doctor.

The nightmares and screams of those he could not save still haunted him, as if the line of all the ghosts of his failures grew bigger. The brutality of the soldiers undoing all the work he and his staff put into patching people back together by tearing themselves apart nearly drove them all mad. It was a time that he hoped never to face again as they only brought up deeper, sadder memories.

As if there were nightmares he just could never hide from threatening to snap that thread of sanity sending his world of whatever he now loved spinning out of orbit into the dark recesses of space never to be reclaimed.

But that was the past...

Eventually, Captain Fregrad, of the Calamari MC-40 Light Cruiser Alliance, had left the planet after completing the various projects and duties leaving the new mayor of the city, Tyunner Scoon, to pronounce the city a "Glorious City of Peace and Harmony" and the Mon Calamari Governor of Kamino in firm control of the world.

And that was the past...

"I cannot thank you enough.." he said, his throat no longer hurting with speaking. He had been too busy to worry about the construction details of where he would be practicing in New Reef Town leaving the details to his staff. Their decisions and taste had genuinely impressed the doctor and he smiled warmly at his friends, "I give you the day off," he concluded grandly and his staff scoffed at the thought though they were not really scoffing. When he tried to draw them to discuss the new operating rooms they pulled him from the building and sought out a restaurant.

*

"This is Commodore Theren Gevel of the Galactic Empire to the rebel government of Kamino. Submit your complete and unconditional surrender immediately, or you will be forced to."

"So, Ranu Ru, what do you think of the Mon Calamari Governor of the planet. I understand this is the first time a non-Kaminoan has held the position?" Haley and Ranu Ru were always discussing politics which, of course, Prentiss held himself above.

"It is odd but so far, I have noted no ..."

A spectacular explosion lit up the twilight of the ocean world from a city not too far from New Reef Town cutting off Ranu Ru's answer.

"What the--" Boxer stood up sharply knocking his chair over as other patrons of the restaurant began to babble among themselves.

"REBELS!" screamed someone and Prentiss wrinkled his nose in distaste remembering the clone insurgents attacks on the city. He was sure Captain Fregrad had removed that threat for good!

"THEY ARE GOING TO RETAKE THE CITY!" another shouted and the doctor had had enough.

"EVERYONE RETURN TO YOUR HOMES!!" He bellowed. "WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT--"

Another explosion, this time inside New Reef Town, shook him off the table while Imperial Scimitar Bombers flew overhead, the winds whipping off their wing panels causing a curdling shriek as they passed.

Familiar sirens and alarms began to wail and the planetary arial batteries tried to open up only to explode as the fast moving Tie Interceptors cleared the path for the slower bombers.

Prentiss shook the nervousness out of his body and, ignoring the panic and hysteria behind him, stared at the craft's attack patterns.

It was almost surgical in technique and a detached part of him appreciated the pattern.

"They are taking out the military installations first that would hinder the bombers from completing their mission." he mused.

His detachment ended when he turned around and saw his staff in various states of fear, Haley looking at him strangely.

He raised his eyebrows, "Which means military medical staff will be first performing triage and attending to the needs of those military targets first hit by the fighters. Come, someone needs to be onsite where those bombers hit next and there are going to be many injured! We haven't got time to waste!" The others bolted to action, grateful for getting a command, any command, that they could focus on rather than the fires of destruction raining down on the cities.

*

Prentiss was surprised that the body count was not as large as it could have been given the explosions. Even then, however, he still had to think above the screams and panic of the citizens. Parents screaming for their children, children screaming for their parents, families shouting out for their loved ones. It was pandemonium and as he finally pulled down his mask letting the operating attendants finish dressing the wounds he had worked in, he saw his staff, equally exhausted, sitting under an open canopy listening the replay of the holonet news.

"Is the Mon Calamari Republic at war with the Empire?" he asked with a frown throwing his disposable safety coveralls into a trash recepticle.

Haley shushed him as a weary looking Mon Calamari came on.

No.. not weary looking! Injured!

"We surrender. Our homeworld is under attack and incapable of coming to our aid. You are cunning, yes definetly cunning. Striking us while our people fight overwhelming odds. We have decided to allow the occupation of TNO forces into our cities and this world, provided you accept one condition:

"I guess Mon Calamari is at war," Ranu Ru said, stating the obvious. "If the Imperial Fleet is attacking there as well."

"Where the hell are our ships?" Boxer grunted in annoyance. "Where the hell is Captain Fregrad?"

"Not here," Ranu stated calmly, "Or, quite possibly, dead."

"But we are pretty far off the beaten path! Why is the Empire here? Here of all places?"

No one answered as the Calamari Governor listed his conditions to the Imperial Commander overhead.

"TNO shall allow the innocent people of this world to go about their buisness unmolested. It will not single out people because of their race for persecution. You will let the people live as they have always done, just under a different banner. If you cannot accept this, or you cannot speak for your government then I beg you allow us to ferry our civilians offworld to safety.

"This is all we ask, alittle safety. If you accept then we will stand down. If not then we will fight with whatever we have, down to the last half-brick. Then we will destroy the cities."

"Let us see how your mighty empire would enjoy ruling a world with no people or land, just tracks of ocean and storms"

The blood in Prentiss face drained at that threat and everyone went quiet. There, in the shade of a single moment, the Calamari Governor had just given the choice of life or death for them all into the Imperial Commander's hands.

It was not something taken lightly.

"Can he do that?" Boxer asked, clearly not liking the idea of fighting until the last man stands.

He was overheard by a group of Calamari and Azguards and quickly stammered, "I mean, I am no Imperial-lover or anything but I did not wake up today thinking I would die!"

Would the Governor do that? Just like that? Stop the medical staff from doing their job and simply stick a blaster in their hands and say, 'hold this hall'... or 'hold this causeway'?

"Why can't they just leave us alone?" Haley asked.

"Because we have joined the Mon Calamari Republic." Ranu Ru answered, "And..because of our history with the Empire and our own expertise, we are a valuable commodity."

Prentiss looked at Ranu Ru as the Kaminoan finished, "They will not reject the Governor's offer. They want what you have. With more clone soldiers, they'll try to sweep the galaxy under their control once more."

"A virus spreads," Prentiss commented, "and so why would they destroy that which can spread their particular brand of infection?"

"Then we should fight," Haley stated firmly.

The answering communcation from the Imperial fleet in orbit came through.

"The Empire accepts the offer of surrender by the Mon Calamari, and agrees barring intervention by the Regent to the terms offered. I hereby install myself as temporary governor of Kamino, and order the construction facilities around this planet handed over to The New Order immediately. Furthermore, all foreign military forces -- all Mon Calamari Republic military forces -- off of Kamino immediately. We will provide transport if you cannot."

"This will be done within the hour, or the surrender will be voided."

"One hour?!" someone shouted. "Is the man daft!?"

Prentiss narrowed his eyes. No. Just shrewd. No time to think about anything but leaving.

"Attention, all residents of Kamino. This is Commodore Theren Gevel of the Galactic Empire. Kamino is now under the rule of the New Order. Prepare for occupation by military forces; landing craft have been deployed. Resistence will be met with force."

Boxer turned to Haley, "Do you still want to fight?"

The woman's face reddened, "I don't want to fight at all. I am talking about what we should.."

"We should get over to the military camps and see if we can help them pack up. I am sure some of the injured would be hard pressed to leave in such short a notice," Prentiss ordered, interrupting his aide from deciding anything foolish.

Treatment of anything required timing.

Hell, it required knowledge of a cure and right now, we do not know what, where or how to treat this new viral infection..

Prentiss put those thoughts aside as he prepared for more panic.

*

The Imperial Stormtroopers may have blocked the temporary field hospital but that did not stop Prentiss from pushing two of them aside shouting that their presence was endangering his patients.

Haley, Boxer and Ranu Ru were standing in front of some gray-uniformed Imperial Officer and Prentiss suddenly felt a stab of fear at the risk his staff was taking. He was perfectly at ease with risking himself but his staff...

They should know better!

"What the hell is going on here!" he started trying to get the officer's attention off of an angry Haley and onto himself.

The Officer pointed to the unconscious patient on the bed behind his staff, "This..." he stared at the Calamari patient blankly for a moment, "..thing has violated Commodore Gevel's explicit orders."

"I am not military," Prentiss growled out.

The Imperial Officer pointed to the patient, "But it is."

"He is a patient under my care."

"His presence violates the orders of the Commodore and therefore voids the surrender agreement." the officer stated flatly.

Prentiss looked at the Imperial officer with something akin to horror. "You cannot be serious!?" he cried incredulously.

"As per Commodore Gevel's orders, I am allowed to offer the prisoner transport out of the system. Please have him prepared to move--.."

"He CAN'T be moved!" Prentiss yelled indignantly. "That's why he's still here! His condition is critical and he must be monitored round the clock!"

"Captain?" the officer suddenly called out and a Stormtrooper came to attention, "Inform the Commodore that there is a Calamari military unit that is refusing to accept transport."

"Now wait a minute! WAIT!" Prentiss suddenly opened his palms. "I am not refusing you because I want too. To move him is to kill him. Please, it is not a desire to disobey your wishes but a medical necessity that prevents him from leaving."

The Imperial officer turned slowly back to the doctor. "I cannot have an enemy military unit within our lines."

"MY GOD MAN!" Prentiss exploded again, "What harm is he going to do to you lying here unconscious!?"

"Doctor, I cannot have an enemy military unit on our world. I also must follow the Commodore's orders to the letter of the law or the surrender becomes void. Now that is somethign I am sure you do not want to happen as the surrender has your previous governor's stipulation that the population remain unharmed. We are willing to provide transport for this.." he motioned to the patient, "..which would honestly serve all of our purposes. But you have told me that to move him is to kill him. I must ask, are you one hundred percent sure of this?"

Sensing hope, Prentiss nodded. "I am sure."

"I see.." the officer's voice trailed and Prentiss hoped beyond hope that the man would come up with a workable solution.

As it turned out, he did.

Faster that Prentiss could have thought possible, the officer's sidearm was drawn and a single shot hit the patient killing him instantly.

"There." the officer stated flatly, returning his weapon into his holster. "Problem solved."

Nodding to the stormtrooper contingent, they moved smartly away to the next issue.

"Carry on, Doctor." the officer admonished before leaving.

Prentiss could only stare at the man's back in stunned shock.

..workable solution, my foot!

Prentiss felt like a patient being told he had to undergo severe radiation treatment for cancer.

A workable solution...but not a good one.

He found it hard to maintain his professional detachment.

Chapter Three

Bandomeer

The series of events that led Prentiss Blood and his staff to Bandomeer stemmed from nothing more than the reasons that had led Prentiss to Kamino years prior. It seemed no matter where they went, no matter what situations they caught themselves in...they seemed to face the very worst of what life had to throw at them.

They saw the carnal underside and unrepentant destruction living beings could bring to each other so much so that clinical detachment seemed like a fading dream with each passing experience.

It was to happen all over again.

Prentiss cursed as the readings began to deviate from the stability of a few minutes before.

"Get that clamp!" he growled out holding steady the strings of arteries and veins exposed with his left hand taking care that his nervousness did not make his right shake. Haley swabbed the sweat beading on his forehead as the instrument was delivered.

Boxer was busy trying to ensure the stability of the child that he put under knowing that the boy's condition made doing so risky. But the operation had to move forward or the boy would have no future life.

Grasping the clamp with his right hand, Prentiss was all business even as a sonic boom shattered glass and shook nearby buildings.

"Bloody hell!" he muttered knowing his staff was doing their best to keep their fear down. The Tie Fighters had let loose as Coalition and Empire courted the hearts of Bandomeer. At least the Coalition had courted. The Empire? They sent warships and simply bombed the planet.

While the bombardment pretty much confirmed everything the Coalition representative had said about the Empire, the sad fact of the matter was that an Imperial warfleet orbited overhead and the Coalition forces were days away.

It was called "gunboat diplomacy" and Prentiss hated every bit of it. Especially as he saw the results of such diplomacy scattered in various stages of pain throughout his hospital.

The bombing had stopped but not the Tie Fighter fly-bys meant to impress up on the good people of Bandomeer their predictament. Between the fighter's shreiking and the sonic booms as they moved in and out of the sound barrier, the people were rattled and nervous.

It was the time the Imperial Captain decided to appeal to the masses to join the Empire.

It was, by far, the stupidest speech Prentiss had ever heard.

“I listened to Mr. Smiths speech. He listed many freedoms. Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, and Freedom from hate, intolerance, and racism.

“One thing he didn’t say, however, was that too much of a good thing is not good at all..."

"I would suppose that he means too much for the people like us is not good for it seems the Empire seems to desire more and more worlds.." came Ranu Ru's calm, dry reply as Prentiss and his staff listened. They had arrived late to the party and so were standing a ways back though the size of the crowd did not deter Captain Thorton from his speech. He had the means to have his voice projected and it seemed like the little man preened as he did so.

"I assumed that Bandomeers citizens were smart enough to know this on their own, but apparently I was wrong."

"I may be mistaken, but did he just call us stupid?" Haley frowned.

Ranu Ru's facial expression did not change, as was a habit with Kaminoans, but his voice inflection indicated a hint of dry humor, "Of course, Ms. Haley. Too much freedom, too much liberty, too much money and too much medical insurance is obviously a bad thing and we are stupid for thinking otherwise.."

Prentiss chopped up the statements in his mind with a surgeon's care, "He's looking at it from an oppressor's view and obviously those things are a threat to an oppressor's regime."

“The Empire gives you the exact same freedoms as the Coalition does, just with a few limits, to prevent weakness from seeping into the Empire.

Boxer turned to Ranu Ru, "He means aliens."

Haley's frown deepened, "How can the Empire give us the same freedoms if there are limits on some? It's not the same freedoms then if some are removed!"

Ranu Ru, "Obviously, the Imperial Captain cannot subtract which is ironic since adding is not a good thing either."

“These abundance of rights in the Coalition causes weakness, and in addition the hatred, intolerance, and racism that he stated so boldly that the Coalition was against. The truth is, that right now, and for almost the entire history of the Coalition and the New Republic that preceded it, the member worlds are at each other’s throats. Since the founding of the New Republic it has been like this, and the Coalition is carrying on the tradition. At many points, the New Republic nearly broke up because of this."

“Another Freedom he conveniently forgot to mention was the Freedom of Peace. Lately, the Coalition has been threatening war with us, such as in their state of the Coalition speech earlier this year.”

"Is he for real?" Haley stammered out. "The Empire blew the crap out of Kamino. Did he not just bomb the crap out of us for simply listening to the Coalition Representative as is allowed in the Bandoomeer Constitution?"

Others in the crowd muttered, remember that the Coalition all but declared war. They also know that Bandomeer was not a Coalition world and therefore free to carry out it's own interests. The Coalition may not have declared war in so many words, but the Empire had yet to declare war on Bandomeer despite the slaughter they carried out.

“In addition, as of late they have been running a bloodthirsty campaign of expansion, often using underhanded tactics."

"Like the one he is using now?" Ranu Ru asked to know one in particular. "Join us or die. Can't get more underhanded than that."

Haley turned to the Kaminoan, "You think that is what this is coming too?"

As Captain Thorton continued to talk about losses the Bandomeerians could expect with whatever they decided to do, the crowd was muttering among itself.

“Another lie,” Kach continued, “That Mr. White claimed was that you would no longer be able to enjoy the rights you enjoy now if you joined the Empire. That is a complete lie and he most certainly knows it.

"You think that is what he will say at the end?" someone asked and Prentiss saw that groups of people were talking among themselves muttering, the more observant of them knowing what was eventually coming.

Captain Thorton, oblivious to everything but the sound of his voice, continued..

“Another thing that I mentioned earlier was how the Coalition had begun using underhanded tactics to achieve its goals.

"Like what?" Boxer demanded indignantly though he was only heard by those standing close by.

There was nodding and shouts of, “Yes,” from the crowd.

“And I am sure you all have heard bout the so-called ‘Imperial’ Grenade attack on civilians at the Plaza of the Rising Sun earlier this morning.”

There was more nodding and “Yes’s,”

Boxer shouted, “Get on with it!”

“Well, what if I told you that the Grenade attack this-morning was not performed by Imperial agents, but by Coalition ones hoping to turn the crowd and if possible the rest of the planet to its side. And by all measures they have nearly succeeded.

"Then it's your word against theirs. There's no proof of anything.." muttered Prentiss.

Then the Imperial Captain uttered something amazing.

“Yes, I will confess there were Imperial agents in the crowd, and snipers in nearby buildings in case they were discovered and had to make a fighting retreat, but they were under express orders to observe, not instigate, the crowd and to report on Coalition movements. Not throw grenades at them.”

Prentiss turned to Ranu Ru. "Why would Imperial Agents have to make a fighting retreat if they were discovered? The gathering was open. There could be 200 Imperial agents there for all we care.
And why worry about fighting retreat unless you are up to mischief?"

"So, if the crowd reacted to that mischief and found the instigating Imperial agents, then of course, our civilians would have been shot by Imperial snipers."

Haley was shocked, "They entered a public gathering prepared to shoot Bandomeer citizens for defending themselves?"

"Evidently, the Bandomeer police are embarrassed over that admission and the fact that they did not catch and arrest the snipers. I am sure if Bandomeer put snipers above a gathering on Coruscant, the Empire would have gone into conniptions." Ranu Ru pointed to a group of civil security and police as they murmured to themselves.

"Do as I say, not as I do.." muttered Boxer.

“This is just another example of their cheap tactics, though this time it took place right on your doorstep. They hope that by discrediting us that you will join them and their underhanded, blood thirsty war machine. But instead of have doomed any hopes of them taking the planet peacefully.”

"Cheap tactics all right." Boxer murmured.

"Go home, people. The faction you support is a faction of underhanded, bloodthirsty liars. You do not want to join them. You might not want to join the Empire, but joining the Coalition would be even worse."

"That's it? We can go about our business and remain free? He's giving us the chance?" Haley asked shocked. She turned to Ranu Ru, "Apparently, you were mistaken.."

Ranu Ru simply stood there patiently.

"Perhaps Neutrality would be the best course, perhaps the Empire. But one thing is for certain. Anything is better than joining the Coalition. Go home, people. Leave us and your bloodthirsty comrades in peace."

Prentiss seemed shocked at the conclusion the Captain seemed to give. "I guess Haley is right. It doesn't make sense infiltrating our gatherings and attacking us only to let us go in the end.."

The good doctor's voice trailed off and Ranu Ru remained quiet, patiently waiting.

"That bombardment yesterday...

"Here it comes.." Ranu Ru whispered.

The Empire is most sorry about it. I didn't want to do it, it's a beautiful planet you have, but that's what I was ordered to do. The exact same thing I'll be ordered to do if you join them. Please, I do not want to do such a thing. Last time a little boy was injured. Now, at my own expense he is being given the best in Imperial medical care. But next time, if there is a next time, which I hope there isn't, it won't be like that. It won't be hills surrounding your city's. The turbo laser bolts will land on your cities. Please. I do not want to do that. Go home. Do not force me to do it. Joining the Coalition will only make you receive even more of the same, and that is not something I want to do."

The crowd's tone turned nasty at the threat to fire bomb the cities of Bandomeer.

Whatever hope of negotiation, whatever hope for reconciliation, whatever thread there was for moderate action went up in smoke.

"Well, there it is.." murmured Prentiss. "The right or wrong of the matter is irrelevant. If they have their orders... they'll always shoot." he remembered the Calamarian patient on Kamino.

"He said the bombardment yesterday would be ordered if we join the Coalition. And this time, he'll be aiming at our cities." Haley gasped.

"Apparently, Captain Thorton has very little moral impetus to stand in the way of mass genocide. If he's ordered to carry it out, he will. How can people live under this sort of arrangement? What good is freedom of religion if the nearest Imperial officer can simply shoot you on sight because he got an order?"

"Alderaan was destroyed by such an order," Ranu Ru commented and Prentiss' face went white.

"It is the same evil. It is the same Empire... a little bit more polished, a little bit slicker but when you get down to the meat of it, the people are left to the whims of those in charge. And if they can kill and bombard worlds simply on an order, then there is no rule of Law that we, the people, can appeal too?" Haley asked turning to the others. "Is there?"

"Bandomeer is going to join.." Prentiss said even as the people around him gasped.

"Of course, we're going to join!" Boxer burst out. "Thorton is going to blow us to hell if we don't!"

Prentiss frowned thoughtfully. "It seems to me that our efforts to out-distance this infection is not working. It also seems that our trust in outside efforts to stem the spread also is not well placed and ineffective."

"So what do you propose, doctor?" Ranu Ru inquired, suddenly interested.

"That a more proactive approach to this disease be taken."

Ranu Ru contemplated this. "We do know the symptoms, we know the dangers and along term damage it causes."

"What the bloody hell are you talking about?" Boxer growled and then sheepishly, "No disrespect intended Dr. Blood."

Haley caught on, "But you said that treatment needs specific requirements to maximize effectiveness. We don't know..."

Prentiss smiled grimly. "The first proactive step to combating any illness is analysis. And, in order to analyze anything, we must first procure the proper equipment."

Ranu Ru added, "There is also the operating capital necessary to purchase such equipment, quality control protocols to be observed, staff to be trained.."

"Staff?" Boxer asked again, rather confused. "We are staff.."

"Ahh.. but Boxer, we are but a singular private practice and much more resources will be required to combat this illness of galactic preportions. We need our practice to grow but to grow with the necessary skill to provide competent and objective analysis so as to formulate an effective treatment."

Ranu Ru mused, "Who knows, our practice may grow large enough for us to be our own HMO."

Prentiss grinned, "You certainly do not think small, my friend."

Bandomeer

The Empire had come and there was no stopping it. Occupation, however, did not mean that the Imperial Fleet decides to simply "hang out" in orbit around your world issuing commands and expecting them to be followed. If that was all there was to it, resistance to the Empire would be a fairly simple act. Remove the fleet and you remove the Empire.

No, the fleet merely provided the motivation to push a particular people or planet along a certain direction. The conquest of a world was a far more complex undertaking and a costly one at that. Like any major planetary takeover, all people think about is a fleet coming into orbit, doing their thing and the planet ends up being aligned with whoever that fleet represents.

It was a thought that Prentiss Blood held dear for his practice did not operate with an unlimited budget. Like any major medical procedure, all people think about is a doctor coming in, doing his thing and a patient leaves healed.

But there was more too it. There is costs involved in helping the patient to get better and the larger the practice the larger the costs.

Just as a patient just doesn't walk into a hospital and suddenly gets well, so too a planet with a conquest fleet overhead just does not suddenly become a part of that fleet's organization.

And, just as the type of ailment the patient suffers can be a determining factor in the cost of treating the patient, so too the type of government doing the takeover and that government's own operating procedures determine the cost of having a particular planet in it's fold.

As Prentiss observed on other worlds, the type of credits the Empire was willing to spend seemed to directly equate with just how skillful the conqueror was. In Captain Thorton's case, his rather doleful persuasive speech in no way hid the implied threat of total obliteration of Bandomeer should the people 'choose' to join the Coalition. Therefore, to make up for his lack of skill, the Empire would have to foot a rather expensive bill.

Since had failed to win the hearts of the people, the Empire could not afford disloyalty. In fact, it was a trait that they put much effort into weeding out and to annex a world pretty much against their will would require much effort to ensuring the planet is not a hotbed of malcontents and so-called freedom fighters. Now some may argue that the people 'chose' to join the Empire and therefore, loyal, any idiot could see that if the other choice would have been
death, the choice is a pretty forgone conclusion whether they wanted too or not. No Imperial bureaucrat worth his weight in credits would be fooled by that line of logic and therefore would, automatically, assume the people were annexed against their will.

And Kach Thorton had handed the Imperial Bureaucracy quite an expensive undertaking. Still, if people were resourceful enough and if they wanted to make the most of a bad situation (like being conquered), one could make a lot of money in the transition if they looked for opportunities. Clothing manufacturer's began to purchase material Imperial uniforms were made of so that the influx of Imperial soldiers could be taken advantage of commercially. The Empire was already paying exorbitant costs for retooling factories, rebuilding industrial centers as well as the orbital resupply stations for Imperial use, so why would they pay the transport costs for uniforms made on the other side of the Empire when there were local sources to tap?

The Imperial accountants fought tooth and nail for these little money savers to help offset, even slightly, the amount of Imperial credits going into Bandomeer. Bandomeer was, by far, not the most expensive of Imperial undertakings nor was it even in the middle. Bandomeer boasted a modest population and were already, to the Imperial accountant's joy, thrifty. Therefore the seizure of the planetary treasury did much to offset the expenses and allowed for a little bit more.

The entire planet's military suddenly found themselves without a job as the Empire used it's own soldiers and support personnel. An organization the size and breadth of the New Order did not simply absorb local military units at whim. Old methods of operating and training had to be broken down for TNO methodology to take root which proved troublesome for those older one's who were not only set in their ways but also those who saw value in them. The Empire recognized no value but their own and therefore, focussed more effort to molding the young to their way of thinking. Even young hostile minds could grasp Imperial Procedures and Protocols more easily than older, ambivalent students. The Empire mentality was to let their own disciplinary standards weed out the weak or troublemakers.

For the most part, it worked and worked well.

But then there was the added expenses of establishing schools or rennovating old schools up to meet TNO standards. There were teachers to be imported for the old local teachers could not be trusted to fall in line with the rest of the Empire until the ISB had taken root. Such things did not happen quickly and so, to offset the growing unemployment populace, the Empire undertook many building projects (whether needed or not) to use the local labor pool to it's fullest advantage and give the impression that the Empire provided jobs.

"Dr. Blood! Dr. Blood!"

Prentiss looked up from the holonet news display to see an intern running up to him. "What is it, Cas?"

"We need you to make a house call. Now!"

Prentiss' eyebrow rose. "We?"

"A man is dying!" the intern nearly shouted and Prentiss frowned.

"Take me there! Quickly, now!"

*

The man was thrashing about on the table as Prentiss shouted, "Hold him steady!"

The shrapnel was lodged in a location that was difficult to get too and the man was losing alot of blood.

There was sudden shouting in the room outside where the doctor was working and between the man's howls, Prentiss' own frantic mind, he did not need any more distractions.

"Shut the hell up!" he shouted over the man's screams as he felt the artery slip through his fingers. Instantly, a pool of blood began to collect rapidly on the table.

A door burst open and Prentiss turned, "I need more ..."

His voice trailed off into the quiet pall that had suddenly been cast. A man in a black uniform stood there with several stormtroopers behind him.

The quiet suddenly registered and Prentiss looked down at his patient and saw the reason for the sudden quiet. The man was dead.

Prentiss sighed and pulled off his gloves making note of the time of death.

As he turned back to the man in uniform, the Imperial snapped, "Arrest these men!"

Prentiss was irritated, "What is going on?! Since when is rendering aid to a fellow man a crime?"

The Imperial looked at the doctor without expression. "Since your fellow man was designated a conspirator and a traitor to the Empire."

Prentiss, tired and annoyed, suddenly smirked, "Designated? Is he a conspirator or isn't he?"

The Imperial's eyes narrowed. "Rendering aid to a traitor is a criminal offense, doctor. Did it ever occur to you to wonder why the man had shrapnel lodged in his body?"

"Actually, no." Prentiss admitted. "I saw a need to save a life and I filled it."

The Imperial smiled grimly. "I see a need for our prison to be filled and I shall carry it out."

*

"So... what are you in for?" came a friendly sort of inquiry. Strange given Prentiss was in prison.

"Trying to save the life of a conspirator, obviously." Prentiss remarked with little bitterness. He should have expected this sort of treatment. The Empire was nothing if not predictable.

There was some whispering behind him but Prentiss did not turn. He was too busy wondering how he would be released when someone else spoke up, "You the doctor Cas brought?"

Prentiss turned to the other men and noted they were rather scruffy looking. Apparently, they had been here a while. He nodded.

"I've heard about you," the short but stout man replied tugging thoughtfully on his scraggily beard.

"You were also heard during the speech that pompous Captain Thorton gave. You saw through his 'fancy speech'."

Prentiss grunted. "A two-year-old could have.."

The man's eyes narrowed. "You aren't afraid of the Empire?"

The doctor replied honestly, "Not anymore. After hearing 'do this or die' so many times, you sort of get callous about the whole damn thing."

His eyes looked over the group that was gathering and he noted that most of the prisoners were dressed the same. "What are you in for?" he asked out of curiosity.

The stout man grinned, showing off a missing tooth, and suddenly stood ramrod straight. "Xaver Nom, at your service. Formerly of the RBN!"

Royal Bandomeerian Navy?

"That's who you are. Not why you're in here." Prentiss pointed out and there was some chuckling.

"Sharp."

"He's a doctor!"

"What does that prove? My doctor couldn't tell a wart from a pimple!"

Prentiss grinned, "I'll bet he could charge though.."

There was an answering groan. "Yeah, he loved to add."

Looking at everyone, Prentiss asked, "So how'd they catch all of you?"

Xaver Nom answered cheerfully, "We sort of liberated some of our previous property. The Empire did not like it and when we had returned from our deed... we were promptly arrested."

Before Prentiss could open his mouth, a voice came over the speaker: "Dr. Prentiss Blood. Please move towards the door."

He saw the friendly looks of the rest of the people in the prison before turning to the opening door to be taken to the local magistrate.

"Good Luck," someone called out.

*

"Doctor, if you do not know already, the man you were 'aiding'..."

Prentiss smiled slightly, "Actually, I would say I was trying to stop him from bleeding to death.."

The man in black who had arrested him was an ISB agent and he was not amused. "In this matter, as in all matters, it is our interpretation that matters. Not yours."

The Magistrate cleared his voice as if ignoring the interruption from Prentiss and the ISB agent, "The man was involved in the theft of warships. What do you say to that?!"

Prentiss looked at the Magistrate raising his eyebrows. "I would say that if these prisoners could defy Imperial security enough to steal Imperial warships, your control of this planet.."

"..IS ABSOLUTE!" the ISB Agent growled out. "And they were not IMPERIAL warships. They were warships of the Royal Bandomeerian Navy!"

The doctor was tired of the farce, "Which no longer exists. So you have imprisoned me and are threatening me because I tried to save the life of a man who, along with associates who I am assuming you have now captured, are part of a Royal Bandomeerian Navy which no longer exists and ran off with a starship owned by the Royal Bandomeerian Government which no longer exists, thanks to your decision to occupy this world. In essence, then you are telling me that I am under arrest because of your decision to take this world."

The ISB Agent scowled. "We do not have to justify ourselves to you! We should take the lot of you and shoot you!"

A chill ran down Prentiss' body as he sensed the very real threat this ISB man posed. His eyes hardened however and he allowed himself a slight smirk. "But you won't and I will tell you why."

The Magistrate was enjoying this local native doctor's resistance to the ISB agent who he had a personal dislike for and even as it seemed the doctor was digging his own grave, his words were intriguing. "Why don't you.." he allowed silencing the ISB Agent with a look. He was the acting Imperial Governor of this world and was not some military flunky to be ordered around.

Dr. Blood had one solid reason but the other was more of a rumor. Still, he decided to play his hand. "Two reasons. One, you took Bandomeer at gun-point. One choice offered being life and the other death is not much of a choice and do not think we do not realize this. The planet is hostile under your thumb and while you throw money at us, your overlording the population with your arrests and bogus charges for situations that, in your haste to take this world, you created do not exactly make people warm up to you. The other is the True Empire."

At the mention of the 'True Empire', the ISB Agent and the Magistrate sat a little straighter.

"What do you know of this?" the agent demanded.

"Me? Nothing. I know that the region is rife with anti-Imperial sentiment and a good part of it is probably due to this rebellion within your ranks...this 'true empire'. I know that this world is on the very edge of your expansion and Lohara Sector is too close for comfort! You can't fight a hostile population nor can you be expected to fight the military menace this rebellion will bring at the same time."

The Magistrate narrowed his eyes. "What are you proposing?"

Prentiss Blood smiled. "Let us go."

"WHAT!?" the agent shouted. "You think you can make jokes about your..."

"Explain.." the Magistrate demanded, interrupting.

"Well, as I see it, why not allow these former RBN's to keep their ships? In fact, let them rearm, resupply and consolidate."

"To what end?" the Magistrate asked thinking he saw where Prentiss was going.

The Doctor saw the grasping of his plan by the Magistrate and so concluded, "Send us to Lohara to deal with this upstart. If nothing else, he kills us and we reduce what he has. Either way, you win with one of us or both of us losing."

"What's to stop you from running away?"

Prentiss shrugged. "Nothing. But even so, you would be less a rather large militant group inside your holding and you can focus on your own rebellion. But without a port the little force you allow us to have would wither. They are RBN men and women. They know this."

The Magistrate's mind was turning over the possibilities as the ISB agent looked at Prentiss with hatred. Prentiss thought he knew why. An unattached military force could have it's uses to further personal gains. Perhaps the personal gains of a certain Magistrate.

The Doctor, however, had different ideas.

The Magistrate mulled over the possibilities: A chance to clear the prisons. A chance to rid the world of the former government's restless military personnel. A chance to put the former governments military hardware to use for him rather than simply going through the expense of scrapping it. A chance to take shots at Griz and his rebels and perhaps earn the notice of the Imperial High Command.

Even if they went rogue and totally did not honor the Magistrate's agreement, they would probably prove themselves such a nuisance to Imperial shipping that Imperial Center would authorize a sizeable fleet to his sector thus securing his own position near the heart of this rebellion. Perhaps with the extra firepower, his area and position might grow to something resembling a Moff? He was already a governor assuming the position held.

But what to do with the ISB agent?

He looked at the Doctor and then his eyes slid to the ISB Agent.

"I will accept your proposition doctor. However, I will also have Mr. Saj," he gestured to the ISB man, "accompany you to ensure your loyalty."

"What?" the ISB man exclaimed surprised.

Prentiss merely nodded, accepting the hit. His mind raced ahead putting his medical experience to use.

If I were to perform an experimental procedure, what would I definitely need?

A disavowal of responsibility!

He smiled, "I'll need a letter..."

*

"Well, like I said, the Black Market will be our primary source, though mainly for ships under 600 meters but some larger ones, like old Mon Calamari Cruisers are still available there. We could also raid pirate fleets and steal their ships, though that would tie up the fleet for a while. Our main source will have to be nationalized shipyards above some of the planets we conquer. Your run-of-the-mill civilian model isn't fit to build anything larger than a Corvette or light cruiser, but some of those above Denon, Svivren, and other large Hydian planets are sizable enough to build Star Destroyers on."

"I'll have you know that the Royal Bandomeerian Navy is not a private outfit! We have our honor and traditions and they do not include.."

"..taking Imperial shipping? Taking action against Imperial warships? Taking action against the criminal elements?" The Kaminoan interrupted, emotionless. "Which of these enemies does the RBN have a problem against engaging?"

Xaver Nom stared at the alien, his eyes narrowing. "Your plan includes aiding and abetting Imperial interests..."

"Now wait a blastin minute!" Boxer shouted, "If this so-called True Empire was not fighting the New Order, you'd be up against both at once. The fact that they are shows a divided enemy in front of you and suddenly, you're too prissy to take advantage of your enemy's misfortune?"

Nom, wearing his Bandomeerian Uniform turned to face the younger anesthesiologist. "I understand the tactical advantage here. But your plan also includes raiding Coalition shipping, ALLIED shipping! If Bandomeer is ever liberated, how can we expect Coalition support in rebuilding if we've seized their civilian or, god-forbid, military shipping?"

Prentiss Blood sighed and finally stood up to address the military man. "Captain Nom. I understand what you are saying and while I accept your thanks for getting you released from prison, I will not have you or your men perform duties that you will find distasteful.

It is not my intention to take the lives of good men, women or beings. But, our options are such that accidents can and probably will happen. As a doctor who tries to heal, I know all too well the dangers inherent with our profession even if our intent is good.

I also know, however, that if my staff and I simply move on to another world, it will be a matter of time until the Empire comes knocking. And I see their point. Why stop when you have a good thing going. People have done what you are thinking and have lost. If you feel you can succeed where they haven't, then all the best to you.

If you join me and my staff with what I am proposing, you will have to disassociate yourself from the RBN..at least publicly. Your ship's identities and registries, IFF codes..everything! will have to be meticulously changed. Otherwise, the Empire will simply make Bandomeer pay for your crimes against them. I do not want that to happen.

Everyone starts small and we are no different. We will operate under a Letter of Intention provided by the Magistrate. We will be responsible for ourselves and self sufficient. This means, to a certain extent, we are allowed to raid Imperial shipping to remain operational but most of our attacks will follow the true intent of the letter, to raid those that would aid and/or those that comprise this rebellious group called the True Empire.

We are to lay low from Imperial military shipping as much as possible in the Magistrate's private war. I have a feeling the Magistrate is thinking he will personally benefit from our activities even after this rebellion business is concluded. I will tell you, he is delusional.

First and foremost, we get first choice in everything we take. And everything we take we divide equally.

Now, I am not saying I am some big strategists. In fact, the only professional application I can bring to the table is a medical one. Therefore, I could use your help if you are willing to give it. But I will not force you."

As Prentiss Blood sat down, he simply waited for the various groups of men to converse among themselves. His staff tried not to look nervous but they were out on a limb and out of their element here. It was an all or nothing leap. And it started with a basic diagnostic observation of the men in question. A doctor learns to pick up things about people as you talk to them trying to find out if they were exaggerating their illnesses, if they were not realizing the seriousness of their illness or if they had an awareness that was self-damaging and bereft of hope.

The people before them, while losing the foundation of their traditions with the dissolution of the government which they loved so well, were not subdued nor cowed.

He began to apply his mind to another problem. What to do with the ISB Agent the Magistrate saddled them with?

As he thought of the problem, the leaders of the groups, all former RBN men and women came up to him.

"Would we get a voice in the decisions made for the group?" Nom asked.

Prentiss nearly shouted with glee if he was not frowning as if the question were absurd, "Of course! Now, I would expect that those commanders of the fleet I include in the decision making process would be the willing voice of the main group. Will this be the case?"

Nom drew himself up stiffly, "We will retain the chain of command as accorded us by the RBN."

Prentiss smiled but asked out of curiosity, "I was not commissioned by the RBN nor by any military establishment."

Xaver Nom shrugged. "You've been commissioned by the letter the Magistrate gave you. You seem to be an intelligent individual. As long as you don't get a god-complex, I am sure we can keep you in line."

"Good luck," Haley murmured and Ranu Ru snorted (or as best an approximation to a snort a Kaminoan can give).

"So," Xaver conintued, "What are your orders Captain Blood?"

A slow grin spread across the Doctor's face.

We really are doing this!

"Well, we'll need white and red paint!"

*

The bulk of the True Empire's budding military came from the 21st Heavy Squadron sequesterd for the Hydian Campaign that was so shortly aborted thereafter in favor of rebellion. This Squadron, later joined by the 22nd, consisted of 2 Imperial III Star Destroyers, 2 Imperial II Star Destroyers, 4 Aurora-class Star Destroyers, 4 Victory III Star Destroyers, 4 Illustrious Cruisers, 4 Lancer Frigates, 10 Tartan Patrol Cruisers, 6 Assassin class Corvettes and 6 Carrack IV class Cruisers.

A strong enough backbone for a warlord and enough material to make their conquests unpleasant. But a budding Empire built on the shoulders of outright tyranny required constant vigilance. Constant vigilance, therefore, required constant resupply.

Which made transitting throught that region especially hazardous.

The saving grace for Captain Blood and his entrepid band was the fact that the True Empire had seen fit not to equip themselves (as yet) with interdiction technology. This meant their raids for supplies and ships took the form of attacks inside a planetary system near traditional hyperjump points and beacons.

Some tried to adjust to the attacks by making their exit as close to their destination's mass shadow as they could but the long range weaponry of the Imperial Star Destroyers slowed them enough for the smaller, faster vessels to catch them.

Sometimes the prey would evade the Star Destroyer's long range weaponry enabling them to escape the fast attack ships and sometimes they could not. Still, Prentiss and RBN Commander Nom figured Griz had spies or agents planted at these planets of destination for if he did not, the activity of his fleet would mean they were hit-and-miss and taking any and all freight they could in hopes that their holds might have something useful to their 'empire' was just a plainly stupid way to maintain a fleet. That way was neither consistent nor practical for it would hamper the operation of this 'True Empire's' fleet in response to local governments or the New Order itself, if and when it chose to act against this rebellion. And those responses would become all the greater should Griz decide to stretch out. Therefore, standard doctrine required that one's vessels be adequately resupplied for any military action. They could not depend on hit-and-miss tactics for supplies. Which then meant, Griz's ships had to know when the ships they attacked were coming and what they were carrying. That meant someone needed to know the filed flight/transit plans, carrying cargo and the like and that meant someone had to be on the planet.

So far, the former RBN consisted of 5 Steadfast Gunships and a single Wolf Class Support Cruiser. Not bad for a local defense of a world but not much against the heavy tonnage that the former Imperial 21st boasted.

So the question became: how much of what Griz threw around was desperate necessity and how much was simply blatant greed?

The white-and-red ships (newly painted) of Prentiss' former RBN group had to be used sparingly and as he and Commander Nom glanced over the plastic spacial charts the old fashioned way he felt something like dispair come over him. He had been trying to calculate the average speed in transit from one locale to another as opposed to the possible trajectories and relative speeds of Griz ships. Unfortunately, he knew not where Griz was coming from which pretty much made the whole exercise pointless.

At least until Commander Nom griped, "Ask your ISB shadow! He's has to be good for something."

It was not a task Prentiss relished but then again, he'd done many distasteful duties as a doctor. And so, after procrastinating for so long, he nodded and left.

*

ISB Nagra Saj sneered at the plans he imagined the Magistrate would be formulating. He knew the man was ambitious and he knew the Governor-hopeful of Bandomeer was hoping to remove two problems at once. The outer threat the unrestful, former RBN military brought to the table and the internal threat he himself posed as ISB.

While he figured most of the RBN members were guts-glory-honor fools (and there were some like that in the Empire as well) they made themselves out to be, the doctor-turned-leader was an interesting anomoly. He recognized the man's intellect and straight forward intelligence but he was also inexperienced and it showed.

Making no visible show of glee, he pursed his lips and repeated the request this Captain Blood had made.

"You want to know where Griz is?"

"I want to know where he is resupplying." Prentiss corrected. "We cannot make plans without knowing where they are or where they might be coming from."

"You might scout the Lohara Sector.." Nagra pointed out and Prentiss sighed. Trying to get information out of an Intelligence agent was like trying to squeeze water out of a rock.

"That is true. But the Lohara Sector is large and I would prefer keeping the fleet (such as it is) together. Besides, if you have the information, it would save us quite a headache. Do you have it?"

Nagra stared at the doctor for a long minute knowing that the Magistrate had overestimated the gumption this individual showed. Such gumption was dangerous.

Still, it also could be used. And Griz was a headache that required dealing with.

"I do not have this data," he started but then amended, "But, I know where I can get it."

Chapter 5

Corellia

"Yessiree, those Coalition sons of bitches really screwed up when they attacked Corellia!"

Prentiss and Boxer were on the outskirts of Coronet City, having searched long and hard for quality surplus and salvaged goods. There were, of course, those that sold junk (mostly aliens), scrap droids, metal and the like but it took that special someone who had the specific junk that you wanted. The particular establishment was run by a group of veterans of the last Imperial/Coalition War. These veterans however could not continue their careers to their glorious conclusion as they carried that condition that many soldiers feared: disability.

They were not the regretful sort of veterans that one might find begging for handouts in front of some recruitment station (much to the chagrin of the Military Recruitment Offices). No, these veterans were proud of their service in the defense of Corellia (if not the Empire) and talked long and (seeming) endlessly about their valiant service. As Prentiss heard more and more of these stories, he found the tales changed and the teller's importance to certain events having grown from the last time the tale was told. Still, the exaggeration did not bother him and, in fact, he approved for it kept an otherwise difficult style of living as a result of their injuries from overcoming the veterans.

If there was one commonality to the tales told, however, it was the fact that the main strategy employed by their Lord Darksword, Governor of Corellia, seemed to involve getting the stuffing pounded out of them by the Coalition attack fleet.

Whoever thought of the 'Hammer and Anvil' strategy really did not give a flying-flip about the soldiers who made up the anvil as it involved their numbers getting mashed to paste while waiting for their salvation from those who made up the hammer. It was a simple strategy and as he viewed the footage the veterans showed him of the battle to liven up their tales, he wondered if that was the best the Empire could come up with?

Boxer, taken up by the tales, came the defense of the Empire when Prentiss put the question to words. "The Empire was outnumbered! The entire Coalition fleet had entered the Corellian system and so the Empire had to put the larger force into a vise! Surround the enemy and blow it to bits!"

Prentiss relented because he did not want to say anything that might lessen the sacrifice of these veterans. Inside, however, he thought that they were needlessly sacrificed by Darksword for the fortress world of Corellia itself, with it's planetary batteries and multiple shields could have served as the anvil freeing the fleet to make their contributions without losing so much.

"So what have you got?" he changed the subject and the old man grinned a toothy grin.

"Come on back.." his personal repulser-chair lifted and the veteran led Prentiss and Boxer into a large warehouse filled with various piles of scrap, durasteel, droids, parts, engines, landcruisers, landspeeders, you name it, this old man and his crew seemed to have it.

"Where did you collect all this..." Prentiss whispered admiringly and the veteran beamed.

"Took a while but with our discharge payment, we purchased a few ships, got a crew we could trust and sent them out in the galaxy in search of junk. You'd be surprised how much of it is out there. 20,000 years of war in this galaxy and we have a good source. Some is army surplus.. some is corporate discards.. who knows what some people find valuable?"

"I bet after Corellia, there was a ton of merchandise.." Boxer admired.

"Hell, yes! There is still stuff floating around out there. The Empire took surrenders ships or ships they had boarded... even scuttled craft leave debris full of nice oddities that might be sold for something. But the Empire can't scuttle everything or blow up everything as it's too expensive. Why do that when we could make a living off of it? Besides, they tax my sales anyway so they win even with my selling of junk."

Boxer noticed an old, rusted battledroid. "They still have weapons on it?"

The old man chuckled, "If you want to call that rusted bit of steel a weapon. Some things still have blasters and some may work but I am not a weapons surplus depot. Missiles, Mines and such go to the weapons surplus depot run by a buddy of mine. There are others, but we give each other business."

"The military does not.." Prentiss' voice trailed off and the old man laughed.

"Whatever for? The Imperial Military is a top notch fighting machine. Why would they arm themselves with surpluss or used hardware that may or may not work? Some weapons salvaged are used, damaged, never fired or simply floating about space and were stolen. We have to carry a license to sell this stuff so the Empire gets it's due."

Prentiss was appalled. It was like a shopping center of death.

"Who buys this stuff?"

The veteran shrugged, "Private interests. Sometimes government departments... if they are trying to topple a local government and they need to arm dissidents." the man looked from side to side, "But you did not hear that from me."

"Isn't the Empire afraid these weapons will be used against them?"

The veteran smirked, "The Empire is afraid of nothing. Least of all, an attack made by a private group using salvaged or surplus weapons stock. No, the method of operation that terrorists or such groups seem to employ is going straight to the source. They get some contract with a weapons manufacturer and purchase new. Usually, those who attempt to attack the Empire seem to be well funded and try to purchase the best."

Prentiss frowned, "But a surplus grenade does as much damage as a new one."

The veteran shrugged, "If it works. They usually do, I'll grant you but you are missing the larger picture."

"What's that?" the doctor asked.

"The Empire is sure to counter attack. If you are not using the best, if you are not well connected and well funded, then you will probably be dead."

"The Rebel Alliance..." started Prentiss and the veteran laughed.

"Where are they now?"

Prentiss had to acknowledge the point and as they moved to the rear of the warehouse the old man stopped. "Here we are."

Prentiss and Boxer stared at the silent figures towering over them.

"They must be 15 meters tall!" the doctor exclaimed.

"More like 20," the veteran corrected and turned his lift to the merchandise. "Found these beasties floating about. There are 26 intact, I think, and 14 more with damage. 5 are partial and another 5 I would just use for parts."

"What are they?" Boxer asked in awe.

"A Coalition droid of some sort," the old man answered, coughing slightly. "We could never get them to work. Damn things got no brain. No wonder the Coalition lost. They built stuff half-assed!"

Prentiss pounced, "So, how much?"

The veteran scratched the back of his head, "Well, I was told the Coaltion paid at least half a million credits per droid... so I was thinking, cut that in half: 250,000 credits per.

"250,000 credits?!" Prentiss shouted incredulously. "They are used and they don't even work!"

The veteran grinned, "I had to try. How about 7,000 credits per unit?"

Prentiss groaned. "Look, we are a non-profit organization whose primary work is medical relief to those in need. We have quite a bit of disabled people under our care ourselves and we are looking to provide some them with some sort of meaningful work. I can give you 1,000 credits per intact unit you are willing to part with at that price."

"1,000 credits!?" the veteran exclaimed. "I can get that much melting them down to scrap!"

Prentiss shrugged, "Then we'll go see what other stuff you have to offer.."

He started to walk off and the man moved his lift in front of the doctor. The dead machines had not moved in over a year and the cost of transporting them was just too much for him to make the expense.

"How about this.. If you give me 1,200 credits per intact unit, I'll let you have everything!"

The hope in the old man's eyes was evident.

Prentiss narrowed his eyes at the silent machines. "We'll have to inspect each one to determine which are intact."

The veteran drew himself up as much as he could in his lift, "I said there were 26!" he snapped.

Prentiss grinned, "You said you thought there were 26."

"Ahh.. damn." the veteran sighed.

As it turned out, Prentiss spent 30,000 credits on inoperative droids.

"There is no brain in them. No wonder they're inoperable!" snapped Fregdra ("Freggie") Daggarrya, the former head of RBN Engineering and crusty grandmother of ten.

"Are they droids?" Prentiss asked confused.

"Well..." Freggie scratched her head. "They are big." she concluded as if that answered all of the doctor's questions.

"They can take some punishment, they seem designed for space superiority of a sort, and as you can see here, there are two rapid fire cannons, an anti-starfighter laser and it seems to have been made to house some torpedoes."

Commander Xaver Nom looked up, his eyes expectant, "You mean.."

"Cool your thrusters, xaver. I said designed to house torpedoes. Believe me, there are no torpedoes mounted nor piled into this scap heap you purchased and your salvage fellow sure wouldn't have added them to the pile for free."

"So, it's a combat droid." Prentiss repeated.

"Without a brain." Ranu Ru finished for him in clarification.

"Essentially," Freggie nodded. "It also has hyperdrive."

"So it's a droid ship?" Prentiss continued dumbly.

"Without a brain," Ranu added.

"Seems so," Freggie added unhelpfully.

Confusion swirled around in Doctor Blood's head. "carry on," he ordered absently as Haley came up to him with another list of salvage businesses. If there seemed to be one business that was thriving, it was the junk business.

ISB Nagra Saj walked with his immediate supervisor as they overlooked the veranda where the Bandomeerian transports were being loaded with the goods purchased by Prentiss Blood.

"How is he getting funding?" the Supervisor asked out of curiosity

Nagra shrugged. "We left the funding in place for the Royal Bandomeerian Navy, though it's been slashed nearly in half with more cuts on the horizon. It was figured that if these people dented Griz's military even a fraction, that is less official funding we would require from this year's budget."

The Supervisor nodded. The military budget from the Imperial High command was usually a set thing based on current projects and projections and they did not like it's funds diverted for such unexpected silliness like rebellions. So the more the local planets could tap into the resources alloted to them to pay for their protection, the better the IHC liked it.

The ISB Supervisor really did not care. He was more interested in the fact that the Magistrate had seen fit to remove the known ISB presence by sending Nagra off with this Doctor Prentiss Blood.

"We will be watching the Magistrate's loyalty very carefully.." he commented and Nagra remained silent knowing that it was not good form, especially with this man, to interrupt his train of thought. After a moment, "In the meantime, the main hub of Griz' activity is on Agamar."

Nagra Saj was suprised. "We know where he's based?"

"Of course we know," the Supervisor's eyes glittered. "Director Isard was carrying out her own little war of revenge on those poor souls of former Black Hand members trapped on the world. Even though Kaine removed her control of Shroud Command shortly after the war, she did manage to keep a few K500's for Imperial Intelligence's services. Griz came in with the 21st all guns and guts with Isard's people watching from their Shrouds."

Nagra frowned, "Then why did we not hear about this immediately."

The Supervisor laughed, "Because she did not know Griz and his company were rebellious traitors to the cause. She thought he represented a legitimate military operation that was taking place without her knowledge. She tried to find out who was behind it before appealing to the Emperor."

The Supervisor laughed. "I am sure Director Trachta was suitably amused."

Nagra's eyes widened. "He's a Director now?"

The Supervisor simply shook his head. "Soon. Soon he will be pulling the strings on that old bat, Isard. Her days are numbered."

*

As Nagra walked up to the gargantuan freighter, Prentiss motioned him over. "Did you find out?"

"Agamar." Nagra simply stated looking in disgust as he crossed over into the interior the ship and viewed the cargo holds. "Did you find the junk to your satisfaction?"

Prentiss grinned, "Corellia is a treasure trove of materials. I will definitely be visiting this place again! So, Griz is based out of Agamar.." he mused. "Who did you have to kill to get it?"

Nagra smiled grimly, "State secrets are state secrets for a reason."

*

Commander Nom, who acted as Prentiss's second commanding the RBN Cruiser Dauntless, sat to the direct right of the empty chair reserved for Captain Blood. In attendance were the holographic representations of the captains of the five gunships: Captain Herrian of the Olem Goddard, Captain Dooran of the Krell, Captain Yarrb of the Pride, Captain Lassitor of the Tester and Captain Marz of the Talon.

"So tell me, Xaver. Do you think this Captain Blood is an Imperial stooge or is he on the level?" Captian Lassitor asked.

"Might I remind 'the Tester' that the man did get us out of prison.." Captain Yarrb commented highlighting the nickname attached to Captain Lassitor.

There was a grumble of amusement but Captain Lassitor pushed forward. "I ask because I do not want to see our people put back into prison. How deep can we get in with the Empire in striking this rebellious Griz before their claws are so deep into us that we'd kill ourselves breaking free?"

"How do we know that this Griz is not a man after our own heart? He might be the moral impetus we need too.." Captain Herrian was interrupted by the gruff Captain Marz.

"Griz is just as bad as they come. His complaint with the Empire is that they are too subtle. That they don't kill enough and instill fear enough to suit him and his apparent lust to be a carbon copy of Palpatine. No... he is not a moral anything for us..."

Nom cleared his throat. "It is too early to get a feel for Captain Blood right now. We.. I do not know enough about the man except that his medical staff are clearly loyal to the man. That says something..especially when these loyalists disagree with him and voice their opinions unafraid."

"He clearly has no fear of the Empire but whether it's because he's in their pocket, crazy or just plain slippery, I am sure we will find out soon enough."

*

Prentiss Blood entered the conference room to see that everyone was in attendance. Behind him came ISB Agent Nagra Saj.

"Guess you couldn't figure out the worthless droids you purchased, eh?" Nagra started out to the room in general trying to raise the hackles of people he really did not respect. The former RBN held absolutely no importance with him.

It was not, after all, like he was addressing anyone in the Imperial fleet.

Captain Lassitor was the first to recover, "As if your vaunted ISB knows anything about them.."

Nagra smugly turned to the Gunship Captain, "Of course, I know."

Lassitor smirked, "Sure you do.." he placated.

Nagra felt the blood rush to his head at the patronizing tone of the Bandommerian. "The reason, you idiot, that there is no brain in the machines you bought is because they are not droids! They are piloted by people on the host ship. The bloody thing is a remote! And you fools could not even figure it out!"

The ISB agent sat down in satisfaction as the Captains mulled over the revelation.

Commander Nom spoke first, "But why mount hyperdrives on the remotes? The first jump it makes would put it out of contact with the host and the pilots would lose control of it.."

"Apparently the geniuses," he used the word like a sarcastic curse, "at Coalition R&D felt differently."

Prentiss brought the meeting back on point before any Captian could respond to the obnoxious ISB man. "In any event," he started, "we are here to determine our next course of action against Griz and this True Empire based out of Agamar."

Commander Nom grunted, "We did a preliminary analysis regarding the approximate speed of his fleet from the accounts of his attacks in planets in the Lohara Sector. The attacks are short and quick. He is not risking his fleet yet for any big catch."

Nagra Saj snorted, "He's probably still trying to weed out any of those under his command that are still loyal to the New Order."

Prentiss Blood looked sharply at the ISB Agent. "Are you aware of such a group of Imperial loyalists within his ranks or are you just guessing?"

The ISB Agent reared back as if slapped. He growled out, "It was a guess.."

The Captains around the table perked up at Prentiss seeming to put the Imperial man in his place and Lassitor spoke up, "Trying to get at Griz's fleet is going to be a tough nut to crack. Our ships are not exactly siege ships and we cannot fight the Empire's war for them."

As Nagra bristled at the comment, Prentiss waved it away. "Do not worry, Captain. I am not about to throw our ships away to placate any interest other than our own. If Griz won't come out on his own, we'll have to simply draw him out."

Captain Herrian's brows furrowed in thought. "I've been thinking about this. And it seems to me that unless Griz has operatives on planets sending freighters and transports to the Lohara Sector, which I seriously doubt, then he has people on the worlds receiving the goods. In that way, he knows what is coming and when it is coming. He can decide if it's worth his while."

Commander Nom spoke up, "That means he either has someone in whatever serves and the regulatory port control of the planet or he pays someone for the information."

Prentiss concluded thoughtfully, "Well, since the Empire has not yet responded to this rebellion, and even though we don't know how many raids Griz has carried out we do know that he has not yet met with defeat or frustration. That kind of upset would make the holonet and embolden other worlds to follow suit."

He grinned, "Therefore, the man is supremely confident but also may have alittle desperation looming somewhere because the hammer of the Empire has yet to fall. The longer the Empire delays, the more bold Griz will get with his attacks and the greater his greed will become."

He turned to Nagra, "Could you find out if the Empire is going to strike any time soon?"

Nagra sneered at Prentiss, "Why should I?" he threw out grandly.

As the other Captains stiffened at the Imperial's response, Prentiss merely shrugged. "You will be with us in the attack and so I would imagine you would like to have the best chance of survival. One way to ensure that is to let us know what the Empire may be doing so we can plan accordingly. Unless you don't mind dying with a bunch of fools who could not figure out a Coalition remote?"

Nagra grumbled something under his breath and nodded.

The fools did have point!

Chapter Six

Elom

The enmity between the Elom and the Elomin were well known to the man and as he had come to the world with a specific mission, he noted that he would have ample time to set himself into a nice position of exploitation. Griz would definitely reward his efforts well!

The Commonwealth had been visiting the world for the better part of a year working with the natives to soften their distrust of each other building and improving the world's infrastructure. And to be honest it did not have much of one. The Elom were the more simplistic of the group whereas the Elomin were more daring in talking starfaring societies.

But there was a hatred of the Empire as they were enslaved during Palpatine's reign only to be liberated by the New Republic. It's fall left them alone until the Commonwealth and in that, they saw a new hope.

While the Elom worked and lived underground, the Commonwealth Corps of Engineers worked to reinforce their underground dwellings and improve the general health of that population. They cared for the merchant and trading ground stations while their fellows, the Elomin, were the caretakers of the trading stations being erected in orbit. After a year, the Commonwealth had built up quite a trading community that could only be further strengthened with the Hapen's joining of the Commonwealth, if rumors were to be believed.

The man did not care one way or the other, however. His job was to mark the goods and relay that information back to Griz so the True Empire could take advantage of the inferior.

And there were many in this galaxy who were inferior. Especially the New Order.

The minions of Daemon Hyfe, Azrael Zell, Simon Kaine, Bhindi Drayson and others were the fodder that the True Empire would feed off of. And with the exploits of the New Order's able officers such as those of Governor Park Kraken and Grand Admiral Desaria, Griz's forces would have to move quickly to blunt their strikes.

And that was the question?

Who would the Emperor send to deal with Griz and the glorious True Empire?

Would the SS under Wes Vos be tasked?

Would the newcomer Kach Thorton try to make a name for himself against the likes of Griz?

The spy shuddered in anticipation and at his part to play in this drama.

There had been a convoy that settled a less than public route with the port authorities of a planet near the sector Agamar was a part of which, the spy knew, would receive the bulk of Griz's response. The convoy had thought that their course was secret and the True Empire's fleet would be on hand to take advantage of their ignorance.

But a freighter had also scheduled a stop on Elom and no one yet knew Griz's spies had gotten that far out. The freighter supposedly was carrying parts and critical supplies that Griz fleet could use to support their eventual war against the New Order.

Griz had showed his confidence in the spy by sending two patrol vessels and an Illustrious cruiser and they waited for the arrival of the freighter.

The planet's fledgling Port Authority, with it's new equipment from the Commonwealth, had detected the True Empire's ships but could really do nothing about it. The leadership of both the Orbital and Ground facilities sent an appeal to the Commonwealth and a response fleet was enroute.

Still, it would arrive much too late and the True Empire would get it's prize, thought the spy.

The sensors detected a hyperspacial terminus reversion and the spy grinned as the freighter they had been waiting for arrived in system just outside Elom's mass shadow. It was already beginning to plot automatic approaches towards Elom's orbital docks when the True Empire pounced with a microjump within weapons range of the freighter.

It was an exercise that had to happen quickly lest the freighter made a race of it inside the mass shadow towards any planetary defenses that could offer protection and as the freighter's drive flared to life to evade, the disabling weaponry of Griz's attacking wolves lashed out to stop it in it's tracks. And stop it they did within the mass shadow but far enough from any planetary defenses that might have come to it's aid. It was the no man's land of piracy, the space between a mass shadow's edge and planetary defenses farthest reach and in this area of space, both predators and prey rolled the dice.

The spy nearly yelped out in response to the raid and though a bit gleeful at the easy capture the man suddenly narrowed his eyes at what the sensors were telling him. No capture went as fast as that and that was when more ships had drifted into sensor range. They were waiting at the position Griz's small fleet had held prior to the freighter's arrival.

As the spy was trying to process the information, his sensors showed that the freighter exploded quite unexpectedly catching Griz's ships by surprise. One patrol craft was destroyed, the Illustrious was damaged and the other patrol craft has gone unscathed but before they could assess their injuries, the new ships, six in all..one 'cruiser-class' and five of a smaller class, suddenly made a small hyperjump and their failsafes drew them out of hyperspace at the edge of the mass shadow and inbetween the True Empire's escape route.

One patrol craft did manage to escape making the jump as soon as it was clear of the planet's gravity field. The other patrol ship was summarily destroyed and the long range guns of the strange cruiser crippled the Illustrious into inactivity with it's ion weaponry.

The spy could not believe what he was seeing. And while the new fleet moved in and around the damaged True Imperial warship, the leaders of Elom axiously awaited the arrival of a Commonwealth Task Force to deal with all the interlopers. The new ships held no IFF signature and therefore were branded pirates. This would not be a play out of the 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' mantra.

And, as the hour ticked down, sensors detected the arrival of a Commonwealth battlegroup determined to defend Elom and their trading interests but just before they arrived, the pirates were gone and with them, their prize.

Bandomeer

Nagra Saj handed the tallied report to the Magistrate though he was loath to do so. The good Doctor had employed his former RBN people in a successful attack on the usurper Griz's forces. On the grand scale of things, it was perhaps not a critical defeat, but in this early stage of rebellion, every loss had to hurt. Griz's forces were finite while the Empire had yet to strike against the man.

That this Captain Blood had orchestrated this victory made the agent suddenly think about the wisdom of allowing this enterprising 'doctor' continue his activities. But the die had been cast and the man now held the former RBN forces in his grasp and there was probably nothing the Magistrate could do about it now that he had allowed it. Not that the Magistrate cared.

The prisons that had been emptied of the RBN personnel Prentiss Blood took with him were now filled with Griz' rebels and their executions would only serve the Magistrate's political ends in currying favor with Imperial Center.

With little risk to the Empire, an entire ship's compliment had been captured. A compliment that boasted of several thousand individuals. And capturing thousands of rebels, no matter how one looked at it, simply sounded well...impressive.

An Illustrious could boast up to ten thousand crewman but Imperial ships were rarely filled to full capacity. This, of course, did not mean that the ships were undercrewed or manned but there was 'operational' capacity and then there was the 'full' or 'emergency' capacity.

Therefore, Prentiss did not capture ten thousand rebels. However, he also did not capture the full operational capacity of the craft for Griz had weeded out those still loyal to the New Order and those willing to compromise their oath to the Imperial Navy by giving it to this True Empire. Still, those that were captured numbered in the thousands and it was impressive. If the freighter he had used as bait had not damaged the cruiser when it exploded, they might have made a better fight of it.

But they were not expecting an attack from mere pirates as normally that would mean certain destruction. That Captain Blood had attacked an Imperial warship, nevermind that he was operating under instructions from an Imperial Magistrate, would give the man an instant reputation with the lowlife dregs of the galaxy, Nagra was sure.

The Magistrate looked at the report and then at the Imperial Intelligent and then turned his chair to stare blankly out the window. The man was worried but Nagra chose not let his curiosity get the better of him for he was still angry at the man for assigning him to the doctor in the first place.

The doctor, however, had no such compulsion.

"There is talk in the street that you are cutting more funds for healthcare." Doctor Blood blurted out and the Magistrate gave an unconcerned wave at the man.

"See to your private activities on my behalf, Doctor. I will see to my own concerns."

"Unrest here affects my crew, Lord." Prentiss commented with a little more humility.

"Then your crew had better learn obedience or they will suffer the same fate as your prisoners!" the Magistrate slammed a palm down on the desk and Nagra saw that the man was clearly annoyed.

The planet of Bandomeer had been cooerced into the Empire under the threat of being turned to ash by Kach Thorton. As a member world of the Empire, Bandomeer was eligible to receive benefits from the many programs set aside by the Imperial bureaucracy. Therefore, local programs were being phased out in favor of those nationalized and paid for by the Empire in general. This left a surplus of local funds to be put into a pool for the Governor to use in case of emergency, war or other needs. Since Bandomeer had a Magistrate instead of a Governor, the Empire Military Aquisition Act was still financing the occupation. The delay from martial law to Imperial civilian law gave the Magistrate extraordinary powers to use local funds as he saw fit. As it was, he saw fit to increase his own coffers and advance his own personal interets.

Still, the nationalized programs were beginning to take over meaning the Magistrate would soon become Governor unless something happened to disgrace him before the Emperor, the Imperial High Command or other powerful entity.

The problem was not the healthcare as it was. The Imperial program was, ironically, better than the local Bandomeerian counterpart. But that was part in parcel with the Empire having much more money and ability. In fact, the Imperial Healthcare might have worked wonders in massaging the ill will generated by Kach Thornton's ill-advised speech to the Bandomeerians.

Unfortunately, the Imperial Healthcare system fell short with regards to disabled veterans. Not necessarily Imperial veterans but those veterans of inferior military systems. If the man did not serve in an Imperial military organization and was not wounded in any action defending or preserving the New Order in some form or capacity, how could they rightly be called 'Imperial Veterans'?

It was not an issue that came up often for usually such conquests of worlds came at the destruction of all enemy military units. But Bandomeer was different and that difference sparked an unrest that threatened to tear the planet apart.

"I have an idea," Prentiss started.

"Mind your own business, Doctor!" the Magistrate snarled. He was definitely not taking the unrest well. "If I want your--"

"Let me take them!" the Doctor persisted and that drew the Magistrate up short.

"What?!" the Intelligence Agent and the Magistrate both cried out.

Prentiss shrugged. "You have thousands of disabled Bandomeerian Veterans that do not qualify for care under the Imperial Charter that's been imposed upon them and I have a new ship that just, coincidentally, holds thousands. Let me take them along with some extra manpower that used to make up the old Bandomeerian Naval MediCorps. It gives me more hands to help with the ship and it gets rid of an unwanted problem on your end."

The doctor posed the solution calmly and so matter-of-factly that both the Magistrate and the Agent were left staring with their mouths hanging open.

Nagra could not believe his ears. On the one hand, he had just shown how dangerous he could be to the Empire with his 'victory' only to handicap himself and his newly captured ship by taking on old RBN cripples. It made no sense to the agent.

The Magistrate thought about the request and found that he could not find a downside to it. The ship the doctor had captured was damaged and without a proper repair facility, it would be damaged for some time. Even then, if it was crewed by cripples, even the lowliest ship in the Imperial Navy should have no problem if he hand to eliminate his 'Captain Blood' side project of his in a hurry. And he removed those annoying cripples and restored order to what was to be his governorship. If some Imperial Review Board found that he could not quell unrest (from cripples no less!) and keep Bandomeer from being a stone around the Empire's neck then why wouldn't they confirm his bid for Governorship?

"Prentiss, you are proving yourself useful. Continue to do so and I just may make it worth your while." the Magistrate finally admitted. This could, after all, solve a great deal of problems.

When the doctor had gone, Nagra stood up. "Sir, I must insist that we confiscate this prize!"

The Magistrate looked up at Nagra, "What does Imperial Intelligence want with a broken Illustrious?"

"And if he wishes to turn those guns against us?" Nagra warned as if talking to an idiot.

"Then what the hell use are you!!?" the Magistrate barked out suddenly. "You're Imperial Intelligence. If this civilian doctor plots against me and the Empire, I expect you to do your duty. If the doctor does anything other than what I want, it will constitute a failure on your part and on Imperial Intelligence!"

Nagra stared at the politician in angered awe. "You son of drunk whore!"

"Dismissed!" snapped the Magistrate with not a little glee.

Nagra now understood why the Magistrate sent him with Prentiss. It was not to so much to get him off Bandomeer as much as it was to have a handy person to blame if things went bad.

It was political. It was self-centered and ...though Nagra hated himself for admitting it, it just might work!

He had been outmaneuvered.

He had to think about this.
