Months before the Sovereign Protectors of the Crimson Empire had been called to a meeting with one who had once been intended to lead them. Out of respect for his abilities, they did, indeed, meet with him. They heard him out. He had explained what being a Crimson Royal Guard really meant. What being a Sovereign Protector really meant.

They were originally created to defend the leader of a great and benevolent government. To protect those who could not protect themselves, or were in need of added protection due to their vaunted status in the government. Now they had become assassins and killers. They had become nothing more than a band of mercenaries who killed when ordered. They had become a symbol of fear, not protection.
