Makin
The ISD II is a formidible ship. Three of these beauties orbited the planet of Makin, along with a single Mon Cal cruiser and a handful of smaller ships. The planet's defense forces were on call every day, and were well trained and armed. But they were lacking in one valuble department: combat experience.
Experience was one thing that the Empire had in abundance. And experience would play a vital factor in the deciding of the battle.
ISD II Inexorable Makin orbit.
The ISD Inexorable floated gracefully in the orbit of her planet. She was the pinnacle of an era, the Imperial era. Even though the ISD series had advanced considerably, up to the ISD V, the ISD II was still a force to be reckoned with.
Onboard the ship, a tall thin man, his face whethered by the years of stressful management of an unstable galaxy, was staring out of the viewport towards the blackness of deep space. His name was Gregor Eraz, Vice-Admiral Eraz, and he was the second-in-command of the Makin Defence Forces. He was a brilliant tactician, leader, and even a minor poet and philosopher. His men loved and respected him. The same could not be said for his superior, Admiral Donnitz. He was a political hack and a fool. Eraz grimanced and turned away from the view.
"Sir!!" The shout brought the man's head whipping round. Out of what had formerly been the tranquil black of deep space was in Imperial Fleet! Eraz swallowed nervously, his Adams apple bobbing up and down. Then he took immediete action.
"Charge shields. Power to guns. Take us towards them!" The massive ship's engines flared and the deck moved slightly as the ship powered forward. The fleet surged forward.
ISD V Doomgiver ,Mako.
Green laser flashes illuminated the superstructure of the massive ISD V as the Doomgiver's longer-ranged laser cannons fired, spitting death towards the rapidly-moving Makin ships. One of the smaller corvettes was caught in the rain of laserfire and blown to pieces. The other ships streamed forward. Fighters. Bombers. Even the three ISD IIs nosed their way forward.
Captain Xavier Ferrales of the Doomgiver stood on the bridge of his Destroyer, directing the attack with carefully-controlled ferocity.
"Battery 4, engage those 'vettes." The gunnery commander aknoweledged and the four corvettes were submerged in a hail of bright-green laser fire, their shields glowing as they attempted to dissapitate the murderous attacks. It was to no avail; one, then two of the plucky ships were destroyed by Ferrales' direction of the turbolaser fire.
"Sir! That ISD II is coming into range!" The sensor operator shouted, his voice tinged with panic. Ferrales frowned.
"Well, direct batteries 1 through 8 to target that ISD and order them to fire at will."
ISD II Inexorable
The flagship of the Makin defence fleet ploughed forward through the flak of the enemy's fire like one of the gods of legend, her prow emerging through the flames like some devine grace. Her laser cannons spat and her turbolasers blasted, carving a swathe through the Imperial ships in the way.
"Good. When we get into range, give her everything we've got."
"Yes, sir." The gunnery commander said confidently.
A single group of TIE Bombers swept across the battlezone, eight TIE Interceptors in tow. Stray laser shots crisscrossed their flight path, but none were hit. The TIE Bomber pilots kept their ships on straight, heading for the ISD Inexorable .
The TIE Bombers dived, heading low across the massive hull of the ISD II.
The six ISD Vs that made up the Imperial Fleet were now in range, and started to pound the second ISD II. The ship's captain funnelled all power to his shields and opened her engines to the max. The ISD moved slowly away, her shields bombarded by turbolaser fire, but she escaped the Imperial attacks and powered away to join her companions, who had now formed a circle as they defended themselves.
The TIE Bombers hugged the mountanous superstructure of the Inexorable , too low for the shipboard guns to engage them. The TIEs continued on, as shots flew all around. Finally, the bombers arrived at their objective, swerving round the guns littering the superstucture and zeroing in on the target. The weakest part of the massive capital ship. The engines. The TIEs pulled up and shot directly upwards, past the colossal engines. The pilots unleashed the bombs, sweeping away as the engines were devoured in a white-hot blaze of fire.
TIE Interceptor pilot Seril Denzen swept his fighter around the wreckage of the engines of the mighty ISD II, persuing a Makin fighter. The little ship jinked and shook, attepting to escape the Imperials' fire. Denzen aimed his TIEs guns just in front of the enemy fighter and jammed his fingers down on his triggers. Green laser flashes leapt from the Interceptor, cutting into the enemy ship like a hot knife through butter. The ship careened off course, impacting explosively against the side of the stricken enemy ISD II. Denzen banked and took his fighter in a sweeping turn, seeking more targets.
Onboard the ship, Eraz stubled as the engines were obliterated. Staggering briefly, he stood upright and half-ran to his Fighter Operations Officer.
"Order the fighters back to defend the ship. And," He raised his voice so that the engeneering officer, next to him, could hear, "reroute the engine power to the shields and guns. We can't move, but we can at least still hit them."
"Yes sir."
The third ISD II, the Shield Of Liberty, was holding off the imperial fleet very well, stemming all attempts to break through the defensive ring and start to bombard the planet, who's defensive lasers were small and undepowered. One of the Empire's ISD Vs, the Imperial Fist, had engaged the ISD II, but so far was reduced to trading broadsides with the enemy, not doing any critical damage, resulting in a standoff. The Mon Calamari cruiser was powering it's way towards the remaining ISD II, hoping to join its' companion in holding off the imperial fleet.
Two Imperial ISD Vs closed in on the Makin flagship, pounding her with destructive energy. Then the tactic suddenly changed; instead, ion blasts rained down on the increasingly desperate ship, shorting out her electrics and weapons systems. Whole sections of the ship went dark as the power failed, plunging her clew into panic. Eraz attempted to take control of his men, but some of them were beyond reason. One of his systems officers jumped up, waving his blaster pistol. Eraz moved forward.
"Calm down, lieutenant-"
He never finished his sentence. The panicked crewman fired, the red bolt catching his captain in the side, sending him crashing to the floor. The crazed officer swung his blaster pistol round, its' muzzle blazing, sending the other men diving for cover. Finally, one of the security officers managed to get his own weapon out and bring the man down with a stun bolt. The MO rushed to Eraz's side, kneeling dow and pronouncing the need to get him to the sick bay ASAP. Two crewmen hefted the Vice-Admiral between them and carried him from the bridge.l
Space between the capital ships was fillled with swarms of fighters, fighting bloodily, screaming around the colossal ships, filling the vacuum with bursts and laser flashes. The capital ships moved closer, unleashing massive energy blasts, crushing durasteel, pulverising bone, pulping flesh and metal, and spilling blood like water, mixing human with machine.
Captain Ferrales turned to his comms officer.
"As soon as that ISD is completely out of power, hail her and demand the surrender of the fleet in the name of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Hyfe."
"Yes, sir."
And the battle went on.
