Crimson Tide: Durellium Woes (Interlude I)
 • Posted On: Oct 20 2002 6:43pm
Commodore Sae Yonna, recently promoted to her rank and place aboard the Star Cruiser Glorious Heritage, looked over the orders one last time.

It was, she thought, not going to be fun. But then, fun and games had no place in war.

"Helm, plot us a course to the Tava Yagen asteroid field. We're going to show those Trade Federation @#%$ that we don't need their imput."

It took a moment, but the ship slowly turned and, picking up two of her sisters, made the leap to hyperspace.

To Tava Yagen, and Durelium Ore.

"Reversion mark in five... four... three... two... mark!" Almost as if they had been swtiched off as one would a holoprojector, the swirling blue lanes of hyperspace vanished, replaced by the rocks of the Tava Yagen asteroid field.

The field stretched as far as the eye could see in all directions, filling space in front of the ships like no other.

Sae Yonna was already issueing orders. "Bring up the equipment and get those asteroids on board."

The Star Cruiser, well not designed for mining or transport, was large enough that such a mission was more than possible. And with her were a number of small Corvettes, modified quickly for this mission, as well as two of the older Victory class, also modified slightly.

The Tava Yagen system had, luckily for the Galactic Defence Initiative, been monopolized by a small mining firm that had gone out of business some months prior to this operation.

At the time, High Command had decreed that with the Trade Federation in charge of the stocks from Mestra, it would be unnessary to move into the system.

They hadn't anticipated the Federation's treachery. But they had prepared for a sudden loss of Durelium, and this operation was it.

Tava Yagen System - Six Hours Later

"All systems are primed and operational. Preparing to lift off." The few shuttles that had set down on the asteroids, delivering equipment or what have you, rose gracefully from the surface of those asteroids and moved towards the waiting task force, their holds full of the ever-so-precious Durelium Ore.

It would hold out for some time, anyway. At which point the Empire would have to think of a new way to limit the abilities of their former allies.

Sae had no doubt they would. But the GDI would be a step ahead of them. It was their job.

The small task force leapt to hyperspace. They didn't know that another such force was waiting outside the system to fill their own holds, or that the asteroid field was almost mined out by the GDI fleet that had stopped there on its way to Byss.

All they knew was that the GDI would have an abudnent supply of Durelium Ore for some time...

Neimoidia - Two Hours after GDI Mining Operations

"That's correct, sir." the Economic Advisor said as he continued looking over a document, stating that the Galactic Defense Initiative had indeed entered the Tava Yagen System, a System that the Trade Federation had already planned to stake a claim in. A new Mining company was already under development for the project, but if the Galactic Defense Initiative ment to steal Trade Federation Claimed supplies of Durelium, they would have no choice but to protect it.

"Our sources also indicate that the project was a hit and run operation, in which they secured..." the Advisor paused for a moment, looking over a few readouts. "no more than 35,000 Metric Tons, which, according to our economic analasis team, should last them about one standard Galactic month, if they concerve there supplies, and use them only when needed."

The Viceroy nodded his head, a bit concerned that this would be one of several piracy attacks on the Tava Yagen's supply. Though the Trade Federation controlled the largest supply of Durelium in the Galaxy, the Tava Yagen Asteroid Belt, the only other source, was soon to be under Trade Federation control.

"Dispatch a task force to the system to scout for any further Death Initiative ships. That source of Durelium is vital to the Trade Federation."

The Economic Advisor nodded as he turned to the Admiral that would be in command of the scout force, bowed his head, and exited the room. As he did, the Admiral stepped up to take his position, folding his arms behind his back in an at-ease position.

"Tava Yagen will not fall before our Enemies..."

Tava Yagen - One Day Later

The Trade Federation's Scout Force One, the first Scout Force to be established since the Clone Wars had entered the Tava Yagen System, sensors blazing. Messages had been dispatched to allied ships within the area, incase of a Galactic Defense Initiative assault on the small scout force, comprised of the Dreadful, a Corellian Gunship, the Galaxy Quest, a Dreadnaught-Class Frigate, and the Enchanter, a newly built Lancer Frigate. The Admiral smirked as he looked out over the Asteroid field. This was a simple mission to secure the Asteroid Belt, but it could juse as easily turn hostile if the Galactic Defense Initiative continued to steal sources of Durelium.

Tava Yagen - Border Space

The Trade Federation's Second Sovereign Fleet, the second largest fleet in the Trade Federation's growing Navy slowly moved forward into the Tava Yagen System, trailing it's scout force by only a few moments. In about three minutes time, the entire fleet could be upon the scout force, if necessary.

The Fleet lacked Fighters, as there seemed to be a drout of them dur to larger scale Capital Class Vessel Purchases. Standing on the command bridge the Seduction, a lone Trade Federation Admiral stood, overlooking the space that lay between him, and the Tava Yagen System as the fleet slowed to a crawl.

If they Attack... he thought. We will ambush them....

FYI, it was much more than 35 000 tonnes. Estimations on our parts place the load at closer to half a million. As I said, the retreating fleet stopped there as well. That's 25 - 30 ships right there.

Tava Yagen Asteroid Belt

"General, sir! Trade Federation warships emerging from hyperspace!" General Fortire, sitting idely by in the command seat of the Star Destroyer Ice Spectre, nodded his understanding.

"Ensign, please alert command and request the presence of the cruiser Love's Loss." There was a pause as the ensign turned and looked at the man.

"An Abolisher, sir? What could-"

"Ensign, do you really think that the Trade Federation would send such a pitiful force to destroy us here? They have, I'm sure, several ships nearby. With the presence of the cruiser, should they try and turn it into a fight, it will go... badly, for them."

The ensign nodded and did as he was told, and within minutes the Love's Loss appeared in the system. The vessel moved into position behind the fleet, and initiated initial power-up sequence of their deadly wells.

Now, with the flick of a button, the ship could feed power to its most potent weapon.

"Open a line." It was done, and the General smiled at the figure he saw.

"Trade Federation vessels, this is General Fenire of the Galactic Defence Initiative. While this is considered intergalactic space, GDI ships are claiming this system in the name of the Galactic Peace. You are asked to leave this system immediatly. That is all."

"Galactic Death Initiative ships have entered at our flanks. At the current time, it looks like merely an Abolisher Cruiser, sir. As you know, upon our arrival, dispatch notices were sent to the Hapes Consortium, the Mon Calamari Republic, the New Order, the Jutraalian Empire, and the Seinar Corporation, as well as Neimoidian Central Command. We are alerting them now of the vessels approaching the system."

The Admiral nodded his head, and with the flick of his wrist, demanded that a channel be open.

"As you may know.." he started, speaking to the Galactic Defense Initiative's commander "The Trade Federation has long since lain claim to the Durelium supplies of the Galaxy, as we are a leading supplier. As of right now, Imperial Warships, as well as New Republic ships seige your systems, and you dare to speak of Galactic Peace, when you can do nothing for yourselves but reduce your ego's to that of a Galactic Thief. Trade Federation Warships will not leave this system, however, we will not attempt to wage war on the Galactic Defense Initiative. Your brutal, and utterly hostile responce does not speak well for the Trade Federation, as we remain neutral in this time of crisis. At this very moment, Allied Warships have been dispatched a distress signal from our ships after your brutal, and terroristic demands."

With the usual cut-across-the-neck routine, the communications were severed as the Trade Federation's warships continued on there present course (which, I might add is not Hyperspace).

Tava Yagen System

That statement brought a smile to the General's lips. The nerve of that one!

"Trade Federation Admiral, welcome to Tava Yagen. This system has been siezed by the Galactic Defence Initiative. You are now violating a no-fly zone. Please exit stage left."

There was a pause as the man gathered his words, and he frowned a tad.

"And do not talk to me about neutrality. Neutral governments do not cut off those who were once their allies in their times of need. Neutral governments do not abandon their strongest supporters when another, bigger party, comes knocking."

"The Trade Federation is far from neutral. So don't you dare talk to me about neutrality."

Tava Yageb System Outskirts, Grid 987 Alpha Quadrant.

"Sir? Pirate patrol squadron has returned."

Grand Admiral Blackblade turned and fixed an angry eye on the ensign. He was new, too new for this elite fleet, and as such was not used to the newly promoted GRADMs lack of tolerance for pointlessness. A small bead of sweet dropped down his face as he returned the Shadow Jedi Knights stare.

"Continue Ensign..."

He coughed nervously before continueing.

"They reported a scattered signal from the general area of the Trade Federation mining base. The area we were tasked to protect if it was pushed at by those Hapan Pirates. I beleive they were called the New Lorrell Raiders... Or was it those terrorists?"

Dakkon grinned. This was the reason why he had been sent here. An offical Intelligence man. Command still didn't know about the dedicated team of slicers under Commodore Kashlinkovs command that gave him access to a galaxys worth of information. He was the one who leaked stories about Heir Raktus' sexual abuse of a Ralean slaveboy to the press.

"Launch our Fighters. Have them move to standard watch positions. Move our ships into offensive positions. How long until we are in range?"

"Not long sir."

"Excellent..."

Seduction Command Bridge

"Admiral, Short Range Scanners indicate that a Jutraalian Fleet has picked up our Distress Signals, and will be entering the system within a matter of seconds, flanking the Galactic Defense Initiative's Fleet. We'll have them surrounded." the Tacitcal officer started.

"Exellent. Weapons Armed. Shields at Maximum."

"Yes, Admiral." the Tactical officer said as he opened a channel to the Death Initiative ships.

"Galactic Death Initiative Warships, your Presence in a Trade Federation claimed system is nothing short of a declaration of war. It has come to our attenion that at this very time, you also have a fleet entering the Mestra Asteroid Belt, cutting off Durelium supplies to not only the Trade Federation, but the Galaxy. Withdrawl at once, or your hostility will be taken as a declaration of war upon the Trade Federation."

As the Admiral spoke, the Seduction armed it's weapons, and rasied it's shields as did the rest of the Second Sovereign Command Fleet. The Fleet slowly manuvered into position, surrounding and defending minor mining ships as the Scout Patrol Vessels entered at the flanks of the Trade Federation Fleet.

Opening a cannel to the Jutraalian Flagship, the Admiral began to speak.

"Nice to see you out here..." he started casually. "Lovely day for a Battle, wouldn't you agree?"

"General, sir! Jutraalian Imperial warships entering the system! They're hostile..."

A sigh escaped the General Fotire as he watched the new ships emerging from hyperspace. Such a needless thing, war.

"Open a line,"

"Jutraalian vessels, this is the Galactic Defence Initiative warship Ice Spectre. You are ordered and advised to leave this system immediatly or be fired upon. You have ten minutes to comply with these orders."

There was a pause as the communications was cut off, and then, "Alert the fleet. Bring them in on our flanks. All shields up, prepare for battle. I have no doubt that the Jutraalians will be spending more time here than we like."

Within moments the rest of the fleet had arrived, entering the system in perfect formation between the Trade Federation and Jutraalian fleets. And as the last ships appeared, the Abolisher cruiser activated her pulse mass generators. The system was now effectively blockaded.

The Seduction sat quietly against the backdrop of space, listening to the messages being sent back and forth between the Jutraalian, and Death Initiative ships, a strange silence settling over the command bridge, as a second message was dispatched to The New Order, requesting fleet assistance to re-secure the Tava Yagen System.

Severing the silence, Nelix opened a channel to the GDI Flagship.

"Withdrawl your craft, Terrorists. This is an Independant Systems Confederacy Controlled System."
