Game Rating: 6/10
Report: Just got it, kind of impressed with it, but not knocked off my seat with it. At first it seems cool, but the levels (or missions) aren't quite as long, or free roaming, as I expected from being stranded-to-make-a-living on a desolate planet covered in snow... I wanted to run around anywhere, blasting aliens wherever I wanted to.
By the third mission, I've decided this game is mostly for the novelty of online play; as each level is the same, and you do exactly the same thing, and it gets boring, and repetitive, and boring still... until you wonder why you're actually playing it single player to begin with, before turning off the console and rolling over to pick up where you left off with your new Dath Bane: Path of Destruction novel.
The controlling is a tad awkward; in the sense the targeting reticule takes a lot of movement (in any direction) to actually turn your character. I believe they have gone for the 'able to aim quickly, and precisely, with a very wide area of aiming before any turning' angle... and it doesn't quite work, at least not for me.
Sure, one can adjust the turning sensitivity, but then one finds oneself spinning around and going crazy trying to aim with a clearly over sensitised aiming circle... there doesn't seem to be a happy medium. It's either too sluggish, or too zippish.
As stated... online play, mostly. I'm sure that would make it a tad more interesting.
I was somewhat involved in the acceptable attempt at a storyline, however I soon lost interest when secondary characters were introduced that had Final Fantasy-esque names - such as Yuri - to which I decided it would probably just be a run of the mill 'follow the mission path, don't explore too much, and blast everything in sight' kind of game.
To which it is.
Not to mention they've made it slightly more annoying by adding what can only be described as a 'mission timer'; though it is hidden behind the notion of a 'temperature sustaining energy resource', but ultimately comes down to you staying alive as long as you refill said energy from enemies, or you die when you run out of energy (*cough*time*cough*).
Needless to say, I'm not overly impressed. The graphics look alright, but for the most part are hidden behind 'snow winds', which gives the whole environment a very plain, boring windswept feel; not to mention, as expected with being on a planet of snow, the locale can begin to look quite the same... All. The. Time.
Save for a structure here and there, it's all a mass of endless snow... and remains visually unstimulating.
As it is, I think I'll be returning this one for a refund.
...can't believe I traded in Perfect Dark Zero and NFS: Carbon for this crap.
"This one's a good one, too!" - salesperson
...my ass.
My advice: Unless you play this sucker online, try and avoid it like an avalanche (and even then I haven't played it online, so I don't know how well that aspect is, either).
(Hehe... get it? Snow planet? Avalanche?)
