Game Rating: 6/10

Report: Just got it, kind of impressed with it, but not knocked off my seat with it. At first it seems cool, but the levels (or missions) aren't quite as long, or free roaming, as I expected from being stranded-to-make-a-living on a desolate planet covered in snow... I wanted to run around anywhere, blasting aliens wherever I wanted to.

By the third mission, I've decided this game is mostly for the novelty of online play; as each level is the same, and you do exactly the same thing, and it gets boring, and repetitive, and boring still... until you wonder why you're actually playing it single player to begin with, before turning off the console and rolling over to pick up where you left off with your new Dath Bane: Path of Destruction novel.

The controlling is a tad awkward; in the sense the targeting reticule takes a lot of movement (in any direction) to actually turn your character. I believe they have gone for the 'able to aim quickly, and precisely, with a very wide area of aiming before any turning' angle... and it doesn't quite work, at least not for me.

Sure, one can adjust the turning sensitivity, but then one finds oneself spinning around and going crazy trying to aim with a clearly over sensitised aiming circle... there doesn't seem to be a happy medium. It's either too sluggish, or too zippish.

As stated... online play, mostly. I'm sure that would make it a tad more interesting.

I was somewhat involved in the acceptable attempt at a storyline, however I soon lost interest when secondary characters were introduced that had Final Fantasy-esque names - such as Yuri - to which I decided it would probably just be a run of the mill 'follow the mission path, don't explore too much, and blast everything in sight' kind of game.

To which it is.

Not to mention they've made it slightly more annoying by adding what can only be described as a 'mission timer'; though it is hidden behind the notion of a 'temperature sustaining energy resource', but ultimately comes down to you staying alive as long as you refill said energy from enemies, or you die when you run out of energy (*cough*time*cough*).

Needless to say, I'm not overly impressed. The graphics look alright, but for the most part are hidden behind 'snow winds', which gives the whole environment a very plain, boring windswept feel; not to mention, as expected with being on a planet of snow, the locale can begin to look quite the same... All. The. Time.

Save for a structure here and there, it's all a mass of endless snow... and remains visually unstimulating.

As it is, I think I'll be returning this one for a refund.

...can't believe I traded in Perfect Dark Zero and NFS: Carbon for this crap.

"This one's a good one, too!" - salesperson

...my ass.

My advice: Unless you play this sucker online, try and avoid it like an avalanche (and even then I haven't played it online, so I don't know how well that aspect is, either).

(Hehe... get it? Snow planet? Avalanche?)

I liked the preview to this game on the movies and got all excited and went to the game store. I asked the counter guy about this game and gears of war. He stuck by Gears of War which I ended up picking up instead.

I was just going to rent the Lost Planet to see how it was. I may just keep my $6.00 instead.

Ahh.. well. I've been trying to find Oblivion to purchase as well but no one seems to have it around here except to rent.

Oblivion... yes, an excellent choice. Play until you get bored, or level as high as you care to, and then create a whole new character, with a different emphasis (magic, combat, stealth).

Much fun, that one.

I long for an online MMORPG involving the Elder Scrolls title.

Vance, you and me both. Everyone knows that if you put the Elder Scrolls series into an MMORPG it'll be an instant hit due to how LARGE the community is for that.

But either way; I just got my 360 *yay!* and was looking forward to testing it out on this game, guess I'll reconsider and go for Perfect Dark instead (I played the original and loved it all the way; hope I'm not disappointed with this version)

Yeah, I rented Oblivion to check it out. MMORPG's don't usually catch my interest (ironically) but this game impressed me. Now, my pocket book is telling me, if you like it so much, stop renting and get it!

Buy it, for sure. Oblivion is just plain fun, and I personally love the freedom the game offers.

As for Perfect Dark Zero, I would suggest you play your first 360 game with one of the following, instead (as such each game is in order of my preferences):

- Gears of War
- Oblivion
- Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
- Hitman: Blood Money
- F.E.A.R
- Dead Rising
- Rainbow Six: Vegas

Each of the above is a superior shooter compared to Perfect Dark (which in my opinion gets a little weird once aliens are introduced). For a racer type, you can always try:

- Project Gotham Racing III.

- Whatever is out, really. I don't generally get involved in racers, but just stay away from Need For Speed: Carbon, as it's all hype...

Honestly, this was my opinion about the game. But, on the same side, I'm bluntly honest about what I say concerning said game.

It is snow, it is desolate, and it is quite boring when you get right down to it.

Up to you.
