Haven't we had the "move TRF to vB/Ikon/php/something else" more than once? The last time, if I remember, the general concenious was that a move would eliminate a large number of our members...
*shrug*
As for groups... there's nothing to say that the group boards couldn't remain on ezboard. It would only be slightly inconvient to have two accounts, but set up and customization would be far easier.
Though I would prefer to host them directly from the main board, myself.
I don't think there's any reason to leave EZBoard... I'm all in for donating money to TRF... As long as other people are kicking in and we're close to getting gold I'll kick down some dinero
I think ezboard has went down to hell since about 2 years ago. It doesnt get any better; prices always jack up. Sure, we do get new features (that always seem to have a bug in them).
Moving to ********* would be good. And I would fork out cash for that, as far as staying here at ezboard I wouldnt spend a dime.
Now it would be different if ezboard had a "buy a un-limited ezboard for $200" then I would say yeah we should stay. Untill then, recognize that ezboard is the devils tool.
I don't know why. Didn't happen with any other community I've seen make the move. vB is easy to use, threads can be transferred so that you don't loose anything. You've got much more freedom with how your board looks, what things it can do (features, etc). It's just better, there's no denying that.
The argument was used, yes, but it's rather illogical. It works by stating that once TRF moves from 'pub33.ezboard.com/bswalliance' to 'therebelfaction.com' half of our existing member-base will simply not sign up for a new account. This isn't logical, because it assumes that half of our existing member base can't decide whether or not it wants to get out of bed to relieve themselves.
What we would loose would be the occasional person we get via ezBoard. Even that can be contested, though. Obviously we would put an announcement at the top of the board (this board) stating that 'TRF has moved! Visit us on our new vBulliten board!'. This board will still exist, with its large post count, archives, the whole nine yards. It'll still be here, and it would (hopefully) divert people to check out the new board.
Obviously our major member base would make the move. But the argument was that many of our less-active members wouldn't bother to, and thus we would end up with lower activity just based on the absense of those members.
I suppose you would loose a couple, but it wouldn't have a noticable effect, I'd wager. It hasn't affected other communities (not just SWFans). If anything, I'd say it's more appealing to people on vB - has more of a unique and original feel to it.
I think 'professional' or 'serious about this writing thing' would be the right words.
vB lends an air of respectability to a place. I know when I visit a community I usually glance to see what software is powering it (though it's not too hard to guess most of the time). Seeing the vB copyright tells me that someone cared enough to fork out some pretty serious money.
Let's just say it does bring a certain "respectability"... as soon as they visit the board long enough to see a few posts by Ahnk... all respectability is out the window...
