Square Enix folds to disturbing internet marriages...

So I'm looking at the game Final Fantasy 11, and I come across this as part of the FF11 website:

http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/vt/extra2/index.html

For those who are scratching your heads as to what this actually means, let me explain. FF11 is a Massive Multiplayer Online Game, one where the players play characters in a huge, constant game world filled with other players. Now, I have nothing against role-playing in such environments, and Square has not only allowed a number of none-combat activities to appease those inclined, they alos have created a large number of character-related animations to express emtions, which I think is kind of neat.

However, as with everything in life, there are those which seem to take things perhaps a little too far. I don't like to judge people, but it just seems odd to me for two people who have never met to marry their characters simply because they're that into the game. Not only that, but it appears Square has decided to support such activity, and has added it to the game.

I can already hear the witty comments about sexually-frustrated pre-pubescent teens in their moms' basement and the like, but because I don't oppose it as strongly as to make such generalizations on those who have done this, I feel compelled to say that although its' weird, its' hardly hurting anyone and certainly not interfering with anything, so I don't care too greatly what people do in their spare time.

What would be more interesting to hear then Gash or Ahnks' evaluation would be to hear Kas's, since he's the religious type, and if he's against Gay marriage I can only wonder at what he thinks about virtual fantasy creatures getting married in the name of a none-christian god over the internet.

Dolash, roleplayers have been marrying characters off online since someone got the bright idea to start actually using the internet as a means to roleplay... Personally, doesn't bother me a bit except when the people involved can't keep themselves and their characters seperate and forget roleplaying is just a game.

Damalis: I agree on that count (although I still find it a little odd) my point is baisically the one you said about people blurring the character/reality line.

Maim: Eeeeeeeeeeeeeew.

You know what's more disturbing. When you go halfway across the country to meet someone you met through an online roleplaying game.

Characters marry each other all the time. I tend to think it makes them boring, just like when characters on TV do it, but that's just me.

I can't see why he'd give a damn. There are marriage ceremonies conducted in religions outside of Christianity, you know? It's not something Jesus has a monopoly on.

From my experiance on other boards, most people tend to let their chars die once they marry them off... so I don't really see the point either.
