"Dire Straits: Love Over Gold", this whole album is amazing, especially "Telegraph Road". Other necessities include "Sultans Of Swing", "Local Hero", "Money For Nothing", "Lions", "Wild West End", "Romeo And Juliet", "Lady Writer" and "On Every Street", if you want something a little less rock-ish.
"Dry County" is by far one of the greatest Bon Jovi songs of all time. The lyrics are a bit corney, but the music is pure gold. Also recommend "Wanted Dead Or Alive", "Raise Your Hands", "Livin' On A Prayer", "Keep The Faith", "These Days" and "Wild As The Wind" if you're looking for some nice arena-rock anthems, or "Always", "Bed Of Roses", "As My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms", "In These Arms" and "This Ain't A Love Song" if you're after something a bit slower.
"Karma Police" by Radiohead, "The Gloaming" or "Wolf At The Door" are all good songs. Anything from "Ok Computer" is probably worth it.
Jethro Tull are great for an older 70's sound. "Aqualung", "Thick As A Brick", "Locomotive Breath" and "Songs From The Wood" are all nice to listen to.
"Presence Of The Lord" by Blind Faith. "Wonderful Tonight" and "My Father's Eyes" are both nice slow-ish songs from Clapton's solo career.
You can never go wrong with Bob Dylan.
"Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of", "Beautiful Day" and "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" are all solid songs from U2, if you like that kind of stuff. Some of their older stuff like "The Fly", "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "Where The Streets Have No Name" or "Staring At The Sun" is pretty good, too.
Anything by Matthew Good. "A Boy And His Machine Gun", "Running For Home", "Avalanche", "While We Were Hunting Rabbits", "The Fine Art Of Falling Apart", "Weapon", "The Fall Of Man".
Some decent bands: Led Zeppelin, The Police, Pluto.
The Eels (one of the best alt-rock bands working today, IMO): "Susan's House", "I Like Birds", "Rags To Rags", "Novocaine For The Soul"... there are too many awesome songs to mention really, so just get the "Beautiful Freak", "Daisies Of The Galaxy" and "Electro-Shock Blues" albums. It's all good.
