Well, you can run around nude in no mans land if you want. I'll stay here in the trench with my armor on, thanks.
PTO?
What no-mans' land? I don't get it, what's the big fear? It's all fear, I tell you! Gash is most definetly right about the fear.
There was at one time, SEATO (South East Asia Treaty Organization.)
It failed after Vietenam and all that crap the US had in that region.

Ever read Fortunes of War?
Arms Diliberation, makes Russia less of a threat to everyone around her. Japan invades, crushing the old worn out, undersuplied broken down fleets still in port. Though fleets is not a good word for it, more like random asortment of hulks. Their goal is to bring honor back to the Empire by taking the vast oil reserves of the Ukraine. The only thing left to the russians in the Pacific arena is an old Diseal powered sub, barely avoiding detection from the Jap patrol planes.
Anyways, russians kept a few nuke warheads, plot to bomb Japanese harbor, blah blah blah....
Without the threat of mass destruction, things could actually be made worse...

Undesirable because if you set foot in it someone will shoot you.

M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction. Look it up.
You are the first person ever to stumble across the concept of mutually assured destruction. Congratulations.
Forget disarming and destroying all nuclear weapons. I say use them all, destroy the world and get it over with.. it will happen sooner or later anyway.
No it won't. Humanity is self-perpetuating insofar as anyone with the desire to destroy it will never be in a position to do so, not having the requisite self-interest required to gain the power necessary. The idea that history is linear instead of cyclical is very silly and short sighted.
Ultimately humanity operates on the basis of self-interest. Government, which is created by the rulers to gain power and supported by the subjects for the relative alleviation of fear it provides, is the primary example of this in human society. There is no profit for anyone to be made in the absolute destruction of mankind, and so it will not occur.
Even lunatic fringe groups like Al Qaeda don't seek absolute destruction, just of a particular enemy that they feel threatens them. I have no doubt that at some point in the next twenty years a nuclear device will be detonated by a "terrorist" faction -- almost certainly in the United States, almost certainly in a populated area. But it is doubtful that even this will lead to the final destruction of humanity.
Eventually America too will fall and no longer be the primary super power and center of God's Wonderful Universe, and this age of narcissism and self-absorption will end and another will begin elsewhere. Those possessed of the belief that the events of their age signal the approach of the end of all things will as always be wrong, and those waiting for the great destruction sorely disappointed.
