It's unfortunate because the players capitalated the salary cap. The end differnce was pride, ultimately, as both might have settled somewhere between the two numbers... but both played chicken and assumed the other would cave.

Ya too little too late... the players finally agreed to a salary cap, albeit not as low as the owners wanted but it was too late for them to be able to negotiate..
That's 42/30=1.4 million dollars. That's a cutback of $400,000 a year, on average.
While it's a lot of money, they're willing to sacrifice a lot of money. Rumor is anyway the deal would have been $44 if both sides hadn't been so damn proud and full of themselves.
As an aside, the NFL salary cap is $80 million, I believe, if you guys want to bash overpaid atheletes.
