Bettman calls off NHL season

From this moment on, the 2004-2005 NHL season will be marked with an asterisk and caption that simply reads "Season Cancelled." A tumultuous 48-hour period which saw both sides break down major barriers in labour talks was not enough as commissioner Gary Bettman officially announced the cancellation of the rest of the season.

It's unfortunate because the players capitalated the salary cap. The end differnce was pride, ultimately, as both might have settled somewhere between the two numbers... but both played chicken and assumed the other would cave.

Next step: To W for Union Smashing and Scab Hiring.

Ya too little too late... the players finally agreed to a salary cap, albeit not as low as the owners wanted but it was too late for them to be able to negotiate..

It amazes me that there are people in this world who care about anything but drugs.

That's 42/30=1.4 million dollars. That's a cutback of $400,000 a year, on average.

While it's a lot of money, they're willing to sacrifice a lot of money. Rumor is anyway the deal would have been $44 if both sides hadn't been so damn proud and full of themselves.

As an aside, the NFL salary cap is $80 million, I believe, if you guys want to bash overpaid atheletes.

Milkshake, thats not $42,000,000 a player. It's $42,000,000 for the entire team salary.
