Microsoft Zune: 2006-2006
Then your broadband must suck.
The zune was so-so...you can share music, but I believe it is only one freaking song per day.
But the iphone...in my expierience, every device that trys to do everything fails miserably at exactly that, everything. Take the swiss army knife, for example.
The blade is basically useless, when I am going to use a fish scaler that small, woopty doo I have a toothpick and tweezers, and finally, a pair of scissors small enough to castrate Tom Cruise.
In simple terms, there is too much on that iphone for it NOT to fuck up. Plus, it's way too emo trendy for my tastes.

The Zune's wifi features are useless. Yeah, you can share music, but the other person can only listen to the song three times before it disapears. And it can't sync wirelessly - that at least would have been cool. iPod owners can't transfer songs they've purchased on iTunes. And "renting" music is a lame premise over all.
The iPhone has its weaknesses (not enough storage, for starters, and weak battery life). But by all accounts, the user interface is extremely well designed, and it has some really neat new features.
Saying it has "too much stuff" to work is asinine. It's like saying that a computer has too many functions to make work - and the iPhone is, in essense, a mini-computer. No, the camera will not be as good as a dedicated video camera. The storage is overshadowed by a proper iPod.
But it is certainly the best all-in-one available (by appearances). Not for everyone, no, but the best looking alternative out there.
Your Swiss army knife example is kind of lame: they're designed for convenience and emergency use. Obviously larger blades et al. would make for a massive unit, and then you would complain about the size.

It's easy to get around that on the Zune. You change the file format. JPG. Still plays the songs and no protection.
What I'm saying is that multipurpose tools rarely do one thing well. It's the jack of all trades, is he good at anything? No. Does he know how to do everything? Yes.
It'll do all of these things, but I guarentee they will have problems, and I guarentee it won't do all those as well. Take the "choclate" phone, for example. Doesn't hold many songs...my friends broke within a week of him getting it, and it generally does everything....sort of.
