They won't publish it if you don't pay them for the book?

No no...they will but they throw in the offer for you to buy the book if you wish to do so

Right. They still publish it. The book is expensive though.

And they're not paying you for the rights to publish it?

My sister got an offer to publish one of her poems once; she forgot to send the confirmation letter in, though. It was a poem collection, couple thousand poems...

So did I, that's why I was curious. I sent in a poem I wrote when I was 10 as a joke... it was accepted. They didn't pay me though. They generously offered to let me buy the book it would be published in instead.

Yeah that's what ticks me off. *shrug* I sent in a poem for the Parade's contest. I could win up to $300.
