http://www.boston.com/news/odd/articles/2004/09/13/man_arrested_for_leaving_small_tip/I have several friends in the food industry, and I never knew that there was a law saying you had to give an 18% tip for groups of 6 or over. Must just be a boston quirk.

Wow. I'm going to go be a waiter in Boston. Be as shitty as I want to the customers, and still recieve 18% no matter what.

Most place that I know of usually add the tip right on to the bill for a party of 6 or more.

Hrm...I would've found this to be the most amusing thing of the day had I not just read an article on monkeys jailed for harrassing people...

I think it's restaurant-specific. And in those cases, they usually add it to the bill.
I was with my SO in a restaurant once, and we used a coupon. The waitress added 15% to the bill, and then deducted the coupon, and she did so in a way that we wouldn't have noticed the tip was included if we hadn't already known the amount of the original bill.
I would have tipped her 20%. Her loss.
