We have female Senators, might as well be the same thing as far as anyone is concerned. If not, shove it. The entire female society isn't into empowerment, only the majority.
EDIT: The loudmouthed majority, not the numerical one... The stay at home mothers and wives that prefer the old support roles in the home just dont go out on parade like feminist's and equal rights people do...

There is a lack of women in power because, sadly, people are still inconciously bias. They would rather have a big intimadating man leading them then a women who (might) try to keep peace and make more thought-through decisions.
That is not all to say that all men are big and intimadating, or all women are peaceful (*cough*) or that men dont think through things.

I'm curious to know why electing a woman/black person/green truck/three-eyed alien monster/dead squid/any minority to a position of power shows a country as being 'socially progressive' than another?

Yeah because being an American senator is a lot like being the leader of the largest democracy in the world. And there have been lots of presidents who weren't white, Christian men.

Feminism is about choice, Gue. Some women choose to become dedicated mothers and homemakers. That's fine. That's a full time job, same as any other. But some women -- an increasing number of women -- want to go out into the world and make their way as men have been doing for millenia. And without "loudmouths" to defend their rights, that choice isn't available.
It isn't even about numbers. Democracy is about protecting minority rights as much as it is about respecting majority opinion. No one is forcing women to do anything. No one is holding a gun to their head and forcing them to go out and get a career. Quite the opposite; regardless of what the Republicans will tell you, the pressure is still there for women to stay home and raise a family. It's about either offering a choice or taking the choice away.

Not everything has to be about the biggest nations of the world in a certain field. An American senator could be on par with leader of Luxumberg for all things...

Just so happens it is, wonder that. My girlfriend for example prefers to be a stay at home mom, and be supported for while taking care of the housework. So do most of her friends in fact. Not all women want to join the workforce, it just seems that way.

Gue, I think Gash is saying that wether the women you know want to make use of those options or not is irrelevant, simply that it is important that those options are still available, and feminists often work hard to make sure they are. Considering that its' only been a couple generations since areas of western civilisation have begun to aknowledge women as equals who are permitted to do just as much as men, there is a lot of safeguarding to do to make sure there is no regression. And there is a considerable force of people who want that sort of regression.
Thus the feminists are important to make sure there are no encroachments on those rights because the "Old Ways" are not completely gone. Wether the choices freed up by the removal of the old ways are used or not is not as important as assuring they are there for those who do wish to make use of them.
