I just stumbled across this Television gem, and while it is most certianly an HBO presentation, I'm fairly impressed.
HBO - Rome
Beff, I've seen the commercial of that and want to see it but I don't have HBO :(
Its an awsome show in my opinion. If you want to watch it and you can, you should. It retells the story of Julius Caesar, about how he got into the war with Pompey, how Pompey got killed, and right now Caesar has just returned to Rome as victor.
I love the show....

He didn't really get into a war with Pompey. Pompey was trying to overthrow the First Triumvirate (consisting of Crassus, Pompey, and Julius). Crassus was killed overseas, and Julius was fighting a war when the senate (urged by Pompey) ordered him to return home alone. He returned with his army instead, which was bad. Civil War was starting to erupt, so Pompey made a break for Egypt. The Egyptian Pharaoh and his advisors killed Pompey as he reached the shore, then sent the head to Julius to "please" him. Julius was saddened by the loss of his brother in law (his sister Julia had married Pompey), and had the Pharaoh and his advisors killed. Cleopatra replaced them, and we all know how that turned out.
As a side note, Julia gave birth to Alia, who was the mother of the next Caesar, Octavius. Julius adopted Octavius, then came the second Triumvirate (Mark Antony, Octavian, Lepidus), then Octavian becomes Caesar and changes his name to Augustas.
