You can use anything. Paint is your best bet, since PS and such mess with the pallette.
I find your offer very nice of you, but I wouldn't want to put you through the trouble, and also I enjoy learning how to make things by myself. Besides, the process through which graphics are made is more then a little confusing, and though I believe you would catch on rather quickly, a bit of trial and error is always nessecary.

I believe it will work for either system. At least, I have yet to see evidence to prove contrary.
