In the interest of continuing to talk about new music, I thought I'd go ahead and stick this up. I just picked this album up today, and given it one listen through. So, first impressions:
Dave Grohl should stick to soft rock.
Don't get me wrong, Foo Fighters have some good "hard" songs. But by and large, I find their accoustic CD (this is a two disc set, one hard rock, one accoustic/soft rock, 20 songs in all) much more memorable... the rock CD sounds cookie cutter to me, it could be anyone singing and playing the intruments. A couple songs stand out, namely "In Your Honour" and the first single, "Best of You", because they have distinctive choruses... but the rest (on first listening) is good, but blah. Nothing terribly unique here.
I have come to believe that the Foo Fighters are a soft rock band at heart. If you're a fan you'll remember "Times Like These", of which they released a rock and an accoustic version. And you know what? The accoustic version was way better than the rock one! As is the case here, in my humble opinion. The second disc is pretty solid all the way to the last track, which is (sadly) rather anti-climatic and takes the idea of accoustic one step to far, become grating. Maybe I'll grow to like it.
In Your Honour is very cool in that it's really two CDs for the price of one, and whether you like hard rock or soft rock, or both, you'll probably like this CD. Personally, after this first listening, I would probably buy it for the accoustic disc and the two abovementioned "rock" songs.
I'll be back once I've given this CD a longer listening...
