Fidel Castro formally retires...

El Comendante (sp?) after nearly fifty years of rule has handed the reigns of power over to his younger (somewhat) brother, Raul. For better or worse, from revolution to invasion, to cold war nearly turned hot, he was a singular figure in global politics.

He outlived numerous US Presidents, made himself a nemesis of the Western World, brokered friendship with the Communist powers such as Russia and later China, mentored Hugo Chavez (his protege), and saw his country through an economic roller coaster...

How will history remember his dictatorship? How will Cuba fair in his absence? And how will his dwindling health affect what remains of his life?

For better or worse.

Indeed. A powerful Caribbean Power stretching legs against the hegemony of American dominance? A cowed nation now a patsy to its larger neighbor?

This shall be interesting, indeed

It will be interesting to see whether or not Raul Castro will be able to live up to the legacy of his elder brother, and how much closer the bonds between Cuba and Venezula could or could not become with Fidel's absence.
