So my laptop of 1.5 years (Dell Inspiron 6400) has started making funny noises, I think its from the fan. Sounds kind of like the fan motor is dying. Should I be extremely worried, or just somewhat worried?

When it comes to computer trouble, always be worried. Back up your data. When your hard drive crashes, you'll be glad you did.

What kind of noises? I'm guessing from your assumption that it could be the fan motor that its not some sort of beeping or clicking. It could be your disc drive acting funny and being real loud. My Inspiron 6000 started doing that a while back at random times but it hasn't given me any real problems.

My desktop fan starting making noises at one point - turned out it was covered in dust and just needed cleaning out and then it was fine. Might be worth giving it a blast with a can of compressed air to eliminate that as a possibility? But yeah, do play it safe and back up.

Ok, thanks. And the reason I think its the motor is because the noise slowly gets quiter and quiter, kind of like when an electric razor is dying. And I'm pretty sure its not the CD/DVD drive/burner because I initially thought of that, so ejected the disk that was in and the noise continued despite the drive being open.

But yeah, I'll back up the important stuff (so all my lecture notes, school stuff and of course TRF writings/ramblings). Most of my pictures are already backed up anyway I believe and then try the compressed air idea, we'll see what happens from there.
