The gun on a howitzer can be any number of things depending on which time era your talking about. From the Napoleon to Civil War era, Howitzers were either 3 lb cannon, 12 lb cannon, or bronze rifled guns.

Well, actually, according to military science - a howitzer fires on a slightly arced trajectory, a gun fires on a flat trajectory and is used for anti-aerial or anti-armor purposes, and a mortar fires on a highly arced trajectory.
