I'd say that Jar Jar is a sorry excuse for a replacement for Chewbacca.

Weren't they both comic relief, at least just a little bit?

Of course, I only laugh when that Gungan does something stupid, or has something bad happen to him.

Jar Jar and the Gungans were to TPM what the Ewoks were to the original Trilogy - an annoying alien creature who some love and some hate. I for one thing the Ewoks are cool :p but Jar Jar is not.
