Working hard or hardly working? That's for you to decide when you read...

A Typical Day On the TNO Private Forum

Park Kraken

The Kai...err....The Regent has awared your faithful service by renaming you. Henceforth you shall be known as Telan Von Desaria.

I love the book Castles of Steel.

--------------------

Park Kraken

Actually, let's award Vons to everyone and make them all of German nobility.

Simon Von Kaine
Bhindi Von Drayson
Kach Von Thorton
Lupercus Von Darksword
Park Von Kraken.
Wes Von Vos.

---------------------------

Telan Desaria

Note - as far as heraldic titles are concerned, in German the von is not capitalized. It originated from the German noble-title. For example, my grandmother is Baronin von Saar. That translates literally to Baroness of the Saar. Graf von Moravia means Count of Moravia. However, as time went on, the heraldic preposition moved from naming the cities of their landed-origin to the last name as well.

So not only am I Baron von Saar, I am/(was before I moved to Amerika and chanegd my name) Matthias von Mueller.

Others include vom
von dem
von der

Simon von Kaine.... hmm...

von der

Hmm, this raises an interesting question. What is the Battlecruiser von der Tann named after then? I don't recount a famous German by the name of Tann.

Quote:
Graf von Moravia means Count of Moravia

So the English translation of Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee would be the Noble Count Maximilian Spee?

And what is your opinion of Reinhard Scheer, while we are on the subject?

---------------------

Telan Desaria

Spee was an excellent officer and he died a noble deth. He went down with both his sons at the Falklands action and will be rmembered for many years. Scheer was an officer an acceptable quaklity though he and a number of other German Admirals cannot be forgiven for leaving the field and returning to port. The German fleet had fuel and food to continue engaging the Birtish. The High Seas Fleet was created by Tirpitz as a Risk Fleet ,eamnt to inflict as many casualities as possible. This it did not do and all of those eventually went to waste either in the breakers or at Scapa Flow.

If you meet a person with von in his name then yes he is nobility.

The Von der Tann was named for Ludwig Freiherr von und zu der Tann-Rathsamhausen who was a corps commander in the Prussian conquest of France in 1870.

My most favorite officer of the war would be the commander of the Emden. Although she plagued the Allies only early in the war, I loved her tatics.

-----------------------------

Telan Desaria

The Emden was a good ship - as was the Konigsburg.

--------------------------

Park Kraken

Yeah, as far as their careers went. By comparison Madgeburg and Yorck were pure embarrasements. Running aground so soon after the start of the war and passing on the codebooks to the Russians, and hitting and sinking by your own mine?

Technical wise, I like the newest class of German light cruiser, The Coln (ii) class, but mainly because of those handsome 23.6 torpedoes they embarked. Those would do quite a number to the British superdreadnoughts yes?

--------------------------

Simon Kaine

My dad had a model kit of the Graf Spee battleship. Wasn't that sunk heading to or around South America?

----------------------

Telan Desaria

Graf Spee was a Panzerschiffe or armored ship. Termed by the Allies she was a pocket battleship, so called because she was ehavily armed by had little enough tonnage to pass easily by the Washington Naval Treaty. She was a commerce raider, sinking eight vessels in her brief sortie. Her tender was the tanker Altmark, which had a different fate later on in Norway. Its commander prided himself on being a German officer of the oldf school and as a result, followed the rules of commerce raiding. Before a ship could be destroyed, its crew had to be given a chance to surrender and be debarked. This he did, all eight times, and as a result he never killed a single British Merchant sailor. In fact, Captain Langsdorf sent one of his officers with the prisoners everytime they were offloaded to make sure they treated well and fairly.

The Graf Spee put in in Uraguay and was pounced on by the british cruisers Ajax, Achilles, and one other whose name escapes me. The Graf Spee sailied forth when the stay ended as per neutral law. Many lined the shores expecting to see quite a battle. However, the Graf Spee was scuttled, and went down without a loss. The crew remained interned in the neutral country for the remainder of the war, some even joining the Uraguayan Navy as gunboat commanders - ther was a problem with piracy in those waters.

As for Captain Langsdorf, his fate is an unfortunate one. He succeeded in preventing his ship from falling into enemy hands but he failed to bring about a decisivie action and make the British pay. He unrolled the Imperial German Naval Ensign in the hotel room wher he lodged, got into full dress uniform,a nd shot himself.

Note - a motion picutre has been played many times of Captain Langsdorf and his crewmen saluting the fallen kriegsmarine sailors as they were burried once he put in. Captain Langsdorf is seen giving the traditional salute, some of his men the more familiar Nazi salute. What is little known is that the Captain was correct - the Nazi salute was not adopted by all branches of the Wehrmacht until July of 1944 after the Plot failed. At this time, the formal salute was the proper one.

Another note - -Hitler was furious that langsdorf had died on the old Imperial Ensign rather than the swastika bedecked Naval ensign he himself had hasioned for the new navy. He of course did not show it - except to Goring who he ranted to for several hours - - -this was told to the world during the Nurnburg trials.

Yes, Graf Spee was the German answer to the Washington Naval Treaty, although technically the Germans were bound only by the Versailles Treaty. The treaty stated that vessels were to be of under 10,000 tonnes except for when the battleship building hiatus was over with. In essence the Spee was the next generation of Armoured Cruiser.

She was confronted off of the above mentioned port by the heavy cruiser Exeter and light cruisers Ajax and Achillies. Although heavy damage was inflicted to Exeter, the Graf Spee was moderatley damaged and forced into port. With the heavy cruiser Cumberland having arrived to replace Exeter, many expected a large battle, but instead what Telan describes above occured.

The tender Altmark I believe was boarded by the HMS Cossack in neutral waters in order to rescue British P.O.W.s that would have ended up in German hands correct?

As it was, Exeter would be repaired just in time to be sunk in the Far East during the disastrous Java Campaign.

Telan Desaria

In Norway. She was boarded at a fjord in Norway.

Park Kraken

Well, anyways, going back to the thread starter, congrats on your new title graf Telan von der Desaria.

Telan kommt aus deutschland, er kann Detsch sehr gut spreichen.

Das describes the word Kommodore, not the person Kommodore refers to.

I do realize that Telan is from Germany, Kach. Perhaps my German-English dictionary is wrong, but it states that Kommodore is a masculine word, not that the gender really matters.

Btw, What does Dapich mean?
