It marks forums as read based on the last time you visited, so if you take too long reading a thread ... balump. I usually just use the 'today's posts' link on the portal page.

That link is a saving grace, indeed. Paired with a physical examination of the forums apres clicking assures you of total new-post/thread exposure. Ooooh yeah!
