Well, now I have just made a uselessly grandiose statement...I can begin.

I'm LV, head of http://p219.ezboard.com/bgalaxyoftheoldrepublic and I was invited here most kindly to join.
I am experienced in RPing of various sorts, and have played Sith, Jedi, Imperial, neutral, whatever. If someone could let me know who needs a new person, do say. I'm not too fussed about being a Jedi, so just put me where you think I could be useful.

Of all the groups on TRF, TJO needs members the most. The Jedi have been pretty low-key around here for a long time, almost inactive. I'd encourage you to check them out. Vinda-Corp is also A Nice Place To Be ^TM. ;)

What level Jedi are we talking? I mean, I already got some characters written up, just give me the rank and power level, so to speak.

Also, I looked at the timeline...but it doesn't describe all I wanted to know...where is the best place to go to find out...background?

Best place to find background, if the Timeline didn't sate your need for history, is to simply ask here. Many of our members have an amazing memory and are very willing to cough a tome of descriptive text and links at a moments notice.

Jedi on TRF typically start out at padawan and work their way up. If you've done that multiple times before, check the section in our Rules for instructions on how to go about having a rank transfered.
