We're still British Kraker. In fact, Britain still kept relatively tight control until the Trudeau days. Why would we want to throw off British reign is the question?

For King and Country yank.

And yet for all those vaunted prowess you couldn't take over a small country of which around half the population was recent American immigrants.

According to Jefferson it should be just a matter of marching.

I assume your talking about th eus invasion of Canada?

actually what happened is the milita who were supposed to support the reguars who had already crossed the boarder refused to enter canada, saying that they were milita to defend the country, not invade another.

Even then Canada's entire regular army consisted of two British Army Divisions. The rest was militia most of which were actually american ex-patriates who liked the US. There was more people than that who actually crossed into Canada from the state of Kentucky alone. Did the militia being failures help? Yes it did, but a number of operations did involved the militia invading Canada (Battle of Queenston Heights etc.).

I have to agree Kach that Germany has better scenery, though that might be simply because it's larger.

It's beyond me how we keep going back to the American invasion of Canada in this thread...

Its a different thread. But its because we are talking about the military and despite the fact that the Canadian military is mimimal, we are proud of out military heritage and the fact we (in our opinions) beat the Americans in the War of 1812 but you guys won't admit it. And we like history (or at least I really do).

And to Marth's comment about 50% of the pop being recent American immigrants, it was more like 80% of the population of Upper Canada at that point had been Americans who only came to Upper Canada years after the American Revolution and then only for the promise of free land. Generally referred to as the "Late Loyalists". 20% of the population were from the original wave of Loyalists and were true loyalists.

As for the Battle of Queenston Heights, yes the Americans had militia involved in the invasion, but they also had many militia on the American side of the river refusing to cross to provide reinforcements to the first wave. We won that battle because we were able to get our reinforcements to the battle and the Americans couldn't. Well and the fact that the Americans couldn't solidify/strengthen their defensive position because 80 Mohawk warriors were fighting them geurilla style the entire time while they tried to dig themselves in around the gun they had captured. So the fact that they couldn't stop a group of 80 warriors doesn't say a whole lot from them. True it wasn't a straight up battle, but still, the American troops vastly outnumbered the Mohawks.

Yeah. The Americans tried to invade us. Hence why there even was a War of 1812.

Actually 1812 would have happened with or without Canadian involvement.
